Flu season and WDW

PLEASE READ SO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE FLU! (OR WHAT NOT TO DO)

So, we leave for an 8+ hour drive tomorrow to see family for Thanksgiving and then in three weeks we are off to WDW. Of course flu season is here and wouldn't you know it, my DS (7) throws up last Thursday night. Great. His teacher said the flu was going around. Seemed better but then yesterday he came home from school with diarreah.

Since we have the drive tomorrow I called his pediatrician. They wanted to see him. To my relief he does NOT have the flu but the doctor thinks it is food poisoning. So, I asked if I could give him pepto, immodium, etc. for the drive. He said NO. Those will actually make it WORSE and last LONGER. The pharmacist confirmed this. Lots of water, bananas, yogurt (only 'cause it is calming for the tummy) and NO dairy. Only in an extreme case where you will be stuck on a plane, etc. would he even suggest taking one of those anti-diarreah medicines...and then it will take longer to get over.

Food poisoning is bacteria that is festering in your tummy and simply has to be flushed out. Those medicines bind you up and keep it in your system.

Don't know if this is fact or just talk, but I have heard several times that most people who think they have the flu actually have some level of food poisoning.

So, during this flu season - especially if you are heading to WDW - make sure it is the flu (fever, body aches, etc.) before you start downing the immodium.

Wish us luck on the drive tomorrow - I think I need to map out every rest stop!

Actually, "the flu" usually is characterized by a high fever, achy muscles, and cough. Vomitting and diarrhea don't usually occur with the flu. Sometimes people get a "stomach flu" which is caused by a virus or food borne illness.
