Floyd is a small community that is kind of artsy, but country at the same time. It is hard to describe. I guess it would be considered quaint.
Depending on when you are planning on making the trip, you could be there during Floydfest which is a weekend music festival that brings a lot of people to the area.
It isn't far from Roanoke and Blacksburg. Blacksburg is home to Virginia Tech.
There are several wineries in the area. One of them is Chateau Morrisette (actual location is Meadows of Dan, but it is right next door to Floyd) and they have small music festivals during the weekends all summer long. Very good wine, nice restaurant and tours of the winery. There are several Bed and Breakfasts in the area.
The drive on the Parkway can be very nice. Speed limit is only 45 so it isn't a fast moving drive. A lot of lookouts along the way. If you like the mountains and small towns, it would be a nice way to spend the weekend.
