Flowers, 5Ks, and Fiancées-A May 2011 TR *Updated 4/30 The Last Update*

I'm sorry your trip didn't go as wonderfully as it could have. Getting sick on vacation is the worst. I'm really surprised that you weren't that pleased with the cruise. I love cruising. I'll be very interested in any pros/cons you list for us.

Hope you're feeling better hun. I'm also sorry to hear you were sick on vacation and the cruise wasn't everything you were expecting it to be.

Looking forward to hearing the pros/cons :goodvibes

Before I begin, I just want to say that these negative aspects of cruising are all my personal opinions. Some of the things I didn't like, others enjoy. It's all based on my personality and my likes/dislikes.

1) The worst thing about cruising, the thing that makes me hesitate to ever return again, is the crowds. I've been to WDW several times during its busy season (can you saw Christmastime in MK?) but this was way worse.

Everybody's packed onto the ship like sardines. In the restaurants, the tables are side by side, and you have to eat with strangers. Now, our tablemates turned out to be really nice guys, but it was very awkward trying to eat meals with someone I didn't know. I hated it.

At all the pool areas, you had to fight for lounge chairs, and you were so close to your neighbor, that you could read the words on the pages of their books. I didn't like having to share my personal space during a time in which I was supposed to be relaxing. It was hard to be calm and let my mind wonder when I could smell the stranger next to me.

Dsc06472.jpg
(This was taken at the sail away party from Deck 10, looking down on Deck 9.)

All the walkways were really narrow and you had to wait four or five turns to get an elevator that had space for you.

And then there was the disaster called The Pirates in the Caribbean Party. Usually, Disney handles big events very well, but this party had very poor management. I was pushed and jostled around by rude guests, Alex had his feet stomped on by a guy, a little girl next to us was pushed to the ground by an adult. I actually had to say something not so nice to a guy in front of me who pushed me out of the way so his daughter (who was on his shoulders) could see something.

Then, after the fireworks show, they had one side of the ship blocked off, because that's where they shot the fireworks off. So, we had to fight the masses to get around to the other side of the ship to get to the other walkway. Unbeknownst to me, there was a buffet line there, and I was standing in it. Alex pulled my arm and went, "Alicia, you're in a line."

Due to the buffet, though, there was no room for people trying to pass through. Some people even made nasty comments to me, because they thought I was trying to jump the line!

I got to my room afterwards and burst into tears, proclaiming that I wanted to get off the boat right that instant. I know people can be inconsiderate at Disney, but these guests were downright mean. Who pushes a kid to the ground??? I did not like the situation AT ALL.

2) Next, was something that no one had any control over. The boat rocking. We hit some pretty heavy winds and there were a few nights I was very ill. Our room was in Aft, and every night I had a difficult time falling asleep due to the boat rocking sideways. Alex only felt sick once, but I could feel the ship's movements every day. (Dramomine was my friend.) It made walking down the hall and going up stairs extremely challenging. I never seemed to get my sea legs on that cruise.

Dsc07125.jpg
(In this picture, you can see I'm trying my hardest to balance and Mickey is falling on me! The poor CM was having such a hard time balancing. When he/she lifted their leg for the picture, they crashed into me.)

3) Another thing that got me frustrated was how lost I'd get on the ship! Most people aren't as directionally challenged as I am, and for me, a week wasn't enough time to learn how to get from one end of the ship to the other. I’d hop on an elevator, thinking I was going to Aft, when really it was Forward. I kept walking out on the wrong side of the deck. I was constantly going in a big loop to get to my room because I took an initial wrong turn. I tried to get back to my room one night without Alex, and I got so turned around I had to stop and ask a Stateroom Host where I was. It got to the point that whenever I forgot something in the room, Alex would plant me in a chair and he'd go retrieve the missing item. I couldn't even find my seat at dinner, because the room was so crowded and everything looked the same.
I know that doesn't sound like a big Con, but for me, it just got really exhausting. I'd become so frustrated that I didn't know how to get to anything. Not to mention I hated the feeling of disorientation. People would look at me like I was dumb when I was trying to figure out if I was on Port or Starboard side. I did not appreciate feeling like a dummy all week long.

Dsc06373.jpg
(The ship was massive!)

4)This one sounds crazy, but it was true. I always felt rushed on the cruise. Every night, I'd look at our navigators and go, "We have to be off the boat by this time, then go see this and do this, and be back by this, and shower by this time, then go watch this, and eat this, and we can't forget this thing at this place." I know we didn't have to do anything, but I felt that I paid such a high price for the trip, I should be getting my money's worth out of it. So, Alex and I would always time our agenda out so that we were going from place to place. I think we went and relaxed by the pool 2 times on our entire vacation. That’s because we were getting on and off the boat, trying to fit in some kind of cruise activity, and before we knew it, it was time for the show and dinner! I don’t think we relaxed as much as I thought we would on the trip.

5)This last one I won't harp on for long, because nobody likes to hear it. But, cruises are expensive. I know we were paying for food and entertainment and services, but I went into the trip with a little grudge knowing how much we had already shelled out. (Plus, in the back of my mind, I kept thinking how I could’ve done 2 weeks at WDW for that same price.) I am the first to say that I’m frugal, and a part of me cringed at the cost of drinks and excursions and souvenirs. I know for some the prices were reasonable, but for me, I thought they were a little high.

Now that I've talked about all the bad stuff, let's move on to the good.

The Pros:

1) I'll begin the list with something I wouldn't have expected to make a difference. And that was the character interactions. Before this trip, Alex and I could've cared less about meeting Mickey and Minnie or high-fiving Goofy. That was just never our thing. We figured we'd get around to it when we had kids and wanted photo ops with them.

Well, as we were waiting in the port terminal, there was a short line for Minnie Mouse, so we both said, "Why not?" and got our pictures taken. Then, a few days later, as we were walking to the show, I saw Dopey and Snow White and convinced myself to take a photo.

After that, we just kept taking more and more. But only because the lines were non-existent. We never waited longer than fifteen minutes (and that was when Minnie and Mickey were all decked out in their formal wear.) The same CMs monitored the lines, and Alex and I got to know them and joked around with a few of them.

In addition to the absurdly short lines, I absolutely loved the interactions, because the characters were so spontaneous and involved. When Alex and I met Chip and Dale, they spent five minutes with us, goofing around, trying to steal me away, hugging us. And the CM holding our camera caught it all!

Dsc06825.jpg

Dsc06827.jpg

Dopey planked for the kids in line. (He laid down on a little cocktail table and balanced himself. I'm sure it couldn't have been an easy task for the person inside.) Stitch walked behind me once and grabbed my head. I saw Tiana walk through Shutters (the photo store) sit down by the stairs with a little girl, and start talking about her dress.

The best had to be, though, when we were playing one the two dozen trivia contests. Donald Duck randomly walked into the room and began running the show. He pretended to puke at Hilary Duff's name, told a CM to go to the bar and get him a drink, and imitated throwing a pen at another CM's neck. (Don't worry, there weren't any young children in the room to scare.) Then, when my team (Shannonan and her husband and the two of us) won Donald refused to give us our prize bag. He kept running off with it.

Dsc06820.jpg

Dsc06824.jpg

Like I said, I'm not a big character person, but I have to admit, the cruise made them easily accessible and gave everybody (young and old) and chance to spend time with them.

2) The next is, of course, the food. How could that have NOT made the Pros list? The most important thing about this cruise, for me, was that I was able to try new things. For Alex, he got to eat his fill of seafood. He had shrimp almost every day and lobster 3 times.

I tried French Onion Soup, which was delicious and an aged mozzarella appetizer, which was definitely not delicious. I also found my new favorite soup: the chilled mango. I ordered it during lunch AND dinner, just because I had to have it again.

Dsc07008.jpg
(This is the chocolate soufflé from Palo.)

3) Next up, which certainly deserves the number 3 spot is the cast members. I know Disney is known for their exceptional staff, but they take it up another notch on the cruise. Everyone there works so hard, and they always have a smile waiting for you.

Our server and assistant server, Romain and Dubravka, were forever making us laugh and giving us tips. We received some sort of mind puzzle every night, that had four adults scratching their heads and going, "Huh?"

Dsc07722.jpg

Our stateroom host, Marvin, remembered our name after hearing it once, and he figured out our little quirks (like wanting 2 stateroom navigators) immediately.

Then, the entertainment staff...they were something else. TJ, who sometimes headed the trivias, recognized us, and Alex would always shout out, "Hey TJ!" And then they would high five each other. Tisa, the adult entertainment director, was one of the friendliest and funniest people on the ship. You couldn't be in the same room with her for more than five minutes before she was making you laugh so hard your sides hurt.

And all the officers we encountered were nice enough. One stopped and offered to take Alex"s and my's picture, another stopped and spoke with us one night before dinner. We even spoke briefly with Captain John (the head guy) while we both waited for an elevator.

Number 4: The entertainment. You couldn't find better Disney-related shows (unless you were actually at WDW). Twice Charmed and Villains Tonight were funny and captivating, but my favorite was Disney Dreams. I could have watched that show over and over again. The greatest thing about all the shows were, Alex and I always managed to find a seat in the first five rows of the theater without trying.

They also had a juggler and a magician on the cruise. Their family shows were cute, but their adult shows were their hits. Alex and I couldn't stop laughing at their jokes. We'd sit down to watch them, and before we knew it, an hour had passed and the act was over.

Even some of the dinners had little shows attached to them. Animator's Palate (which is, by far, the coolest restaurant ever) had the pictures change as we ate, then Mickey in his sorcerer's outfit came out and danced around the room to Fantasmic. On the last night, all the servers walked around the room carrying their country's flag and clapped to "It's a Small World" which was actually kind of touching. We spent all week getting to know our servers, their country, their traditions, and the song reminded us of how we're all the same.

5)Palo. Oh, how I could write sonnets about the amazingness that is Palo. The food, the service, the setting...it was one of the most romantic dinners Alex and I have ever shared. The sad thing was, we barely noticed, because we were both so engrossed in our food. If I had to pick one last dessert to eat, I would choose the chocolate soufflé. I don't even like chocolate that much! But this just melts in your mouth. Our server made it even more fun by making us close our eyes, make a hole in the middle of it with our spoon, and make a wish by "filling" it up with the sauces.

If I had all day, I'd go on and on about this place. I didn't even mention the brunch! We had brunch with a group of DISboarders and it was wonderful. Two hours passed before we even knew what had happened. The servers and chefs came and talked with us and we got to know them a little bit while we enjoyed our buffet choices. Mmmmm... I need to move on.

6)I'm throwing this one in here as a little aside...but the other DISboards people were definitely a Pro. If anyone ever does a Disney cruise, I highly recommend finding their ship on the Cruise Meets thread. Alex and I didn't sign up for Fish Extenders or anything, but it was still a lot of fun running into a familiar face on the cruise. (Plus, all our questions were answered beforehand.) We were on the boat maybe an hour and a half before ColoradoDisneyFreak (Jennifer) and her daughter, Jillian, ran into us. Then, we met everyone at a meet and saw them all the time around the ship.
Plus, we met another couple honeymooning and they turned out to be very cool people. Shannonan (Shannon and Dan) We ended up hanging out with them a lot on the ship and teamed up for all the games and activities. We ended up having to borrow their lint roller, because we forgot ours.
It was nice knowing someone else on the ship and having someone to share crazy dinner stories with, and if we hadn't gone on the cruise, Alex and I would never have talked with them.

7) And, last but not least: Castaway Cay. (Queue the clouds opening up to allow rays of sunshine to shoot downwards and angels to start singing hymns in the sky.) When we got there, it was too cold to do anything. Alex and I were in jackets and pants, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the beauty of the Bahamas. We spent the day relaxing at Serenity Bay, the adult's only beach (which I kept calling Paradise) and wandering around the island. The place was magnificent; I didn't want to leave. I kept telling Alex (and anyone who would listen) that Disney needed to do a 4 day cruise and just dock at Castaway Cay and stay there. I would have no qualms whatsoever with spending day after day on that island.

Dsc07467.jpg

It was kind of ironic, because up until our CC day, I swore to Alex that I was not going on another cruise, that nothing he could do or say would change my mind. And then, I see Castaway and my whole mind changes. That island is cruising’s redeeming quality, for me. I can't say I'll never cruise again, because that would mean I would never see that little place again, and that would be a small tragedy.

I agree in that what someone likes/dislikes will not be the same for others. Thanks for sharing your opinion :thumbsup2

Wow it sure looks crowded. I'm sorry to hear about all the drama and definitely wouldn't want to smell someone or be able to read their book whilst relaxing by the pool

I love the pic of Mickey and Minnie and lol I am the same with sense of direction so am guessing would be no good on a cruise!

Yay on the character interaction - I love the pic of Chip and Dale trying to steal you away!

Mmm that chocolate souffle looks yummy :cloud9:

Yay on enjoying the entertainment and the DIS meets. I laughed at your comment over Castaway but yay on having something positive that may make you go on another cruise.

We just booked a cruise as our honeymoon for next year and I am a little worried mainly about crowds and feeling sea sick after reading your report...hopefully it goes ok :rotfl:

I love the picture of you guys dressed up with Mickey and Minnie...that dress is so pretty!!

That chocolate souffle was one of the best desserts I've ever had! I wish they had something like it at WDW, because I would get it every trip.:rotfl:

HONEYMOON?!?!???? Now I'm dying to read your TR!!!!:goodvibes

Thanks for sharing your pro/con list! This way people can go in knowing what to expect and I think that's always a plus!

Jasmine went on the Magic in February and she raved about it! She wasn't sure when she left that she would like cruising but ended up loving it and telling me we have to go!! I get terrible motion sickness so that has kept me from cruising:sick:

Thanks for the cruise update! My sister just went on the Dream for 3 nights and loved it, so now I really want to do a cruise! However, I don't like the idea of being crammed on a boat with so many people, I hate crowds!:scared1:

Castaway Cay looks amazing, and so does the food! And I love your pic with Minnie and Mickey in their formal outfits!! :)

I had the same issue with motion sickness, and I discovered the hard way that Dramomine (or any motion sickness medicine) takes away the nausea and dizziness, but it does not get rid of that bobbing feeling you have on a boat. You can still feel every wave, you just don't get sick because of it. Which, in my opinion, didn't help much. :rotfl:

I'm glad Jasmine loved the Magic, though. It is a beautiful ship and even with all my negative experiences, I still miss it a little.

The worst part of the crowds is arrival day, because none of the staterooms are open for a few hours. Once you can access your room, it gets a lot better, because whenever you feel crammed you can just escape to your own space. And for the sailaway party and the Pirates party, just go to Deck 10 rather than Deck 9 and it alieviates a lot of the crowd problems. :wizard:

Ahhh, I know I haven't updated in awhile, but Alex and I are moving into a new house on the 18th, so I have been very busy with packing and switching utilities, etc. In addition to that, Alex and I are trying to buy a bunch of new furniture, so we have been going shopping every weekend. It's been crazy.

I am already looking forward to my upcoming May trip. I was able to get all our schedule figured out, and now Alex, myself, and my mother are all talking about plans and potential ADRs. It's hard to remember that I still have a May 2011 TR to finish when all I want to do is talk about 2012 plans.

May 9th Afternoon:

It's been awhile since I've updated, but when I last posted, I left off with Alex and I headed to WS to grab some lunch.

Since we'd never done it before and it was pretty muggy out, the two of us decided to take one of the boats from Canada to Morocco. When we stepped on board, the CM saw our buttons and proclaimed, "Hey! Congratulations, I'm a captain, I could marry you-it wouldn't be legal, though."

We cracked up at the man's humor and thanked him for his offer. It's always great to see CMs with a great sense of humor, and we enjoyed talking with him during the ride.

Once we disembarked, thanking the "captain" for his troubles, we made our way over to the American pavilion so we could eat at one of my many favorite restaurants.

f1 by Alicia Wolchick, on Flickr

Unfortunately, it was about 11:10am and the restaurant didn't begin serving until 11:30am. Alex and I thought about leaving and walking around for a bit, but the sun was pretty brutal and the sea of empty chairs looked too inviting to pass up.

Dsc04882.jpg

We picked a table near a row of windows and settled in. DH took photos while I checked my emails. We both went over our favorite moments of the morning and reviewed our itinerary for that night.

11:30 rolled around and I stayed with all our stuff at the table while DH went and ordered. We both got the chicken strips with fries, only I got the chocolate mousse and DH got the rice crispy treat.

Dsc04901.jpg

I'm not a huge rice crispy fan, but I loved that it was in the shape of Mickey ears.

f3 by Alicia Wolchick, on Flickr

The reason why I love to eat here is partially hidden in this picture. If you look closely you can see that I have 3 honey mustard cups on the table.

Liberty (who knows why) has honey mustard sauce that I love. I pretty much love the sauce (I eat it with way too many food items) and whenever I find a type I like, I have a hard time going anywhere else to eat.
It’s a little odd, but thankfully DH is easygoing and lets me indulge in my honey mustard love.

Our bellies full, DH and I were ready to head back to future world. I knew we should've just taken the boat back to Canada, but I couldn't resist taking a quick stroll past some of the countries.

We passed Germany and saw Rapunzel's tower, which I thought was very cool. When we were there a few weeks ago, the castle had been removed, which DH and I were disappointed about.

f4 by Alicia Wolchick, on Flickr

Walking along, I spotted my favorite topiary from the Flower and Garden Festival.

Dsc04909.jpg

The Lion King!!

Seeing my favorite movie's topiaries made me giggle like a schoolgirl. There was another couple standing to the left of us and they looked at me like I had three heads when I started pointing out all the details in the work.

It embarrassed me a little, and normally I would've stopped because I hate getting strange looks, but it was one of the few times that I didn't care. I was at Disney World, looking at Lion King, for goodness sake! I was allowed a minute of ridiculousness.

Dsc04908.jpg
The grubs cracked me up.

I had to get a nice picture of myself with Rafiki and baby Simba. (Of course, as I was getting that picture taken, I was saying to DH: "You know this is SO becoming my facebook profile picture. I want people to be jealous."):rotfl:

DH dragged me away from the topiaries, because other guests were starting to look at them, and we strolled hand in hand past the countries. It was blissfully wonderful.

Soon, I saw the Viking sign hanging on one of Norway's buildings and knew we had to take a peek at Maelstorm's wait time.

We were in luck!

Dsc04911.jpg

DH was handed a time card, to which I nabbed it and asked him to take a photo.

Dsc04913.jpg

His comment was, "How come I get handed the card and YOU take a picture with it?"

To which I responded with, "When you join the DISboards and want ridiculous pictures of every little detail you can get a photo with the card."

Naturally, the ride was walk-on. There was nobody in front of us, so we were allowed to pick where we wanted to sit on the boat.

We picked the front!

Dsc04914.jpg

Behind us, another couple sat in the 2nd row. As the boat began its journey into Viking waters, the audio recording started playing. We heard, "You are not the first to enter these waters."

And behind us, in a deadpan voice, the woman replied, "I know; a boat just left in front of us."

Alex and I burst out laughing, because it was so unexpected. The woman heard us laughing over it and leaned forward and apologized for saying it, but we told her it was no big deal.
There was no one else in the car, and all four of us had been on the ride several times prior, so it did not ruin the experience for any of us.

We all had an enjoyable time being banished by the troll and almost dropping out of the open window.

I don't remember this happening, but Alex snapped this photo of me on the ride:
Dsc04917.jpg

I shook my head when I saw it, because I look like a child, completely enthralled in the scenery and the story of the attraction. Since there's only one part of the ride that's light enough to take a picture with the flash off, I know DH took this right before the small drop. Which just so happens to be my favorite part of the ride, because I always enjoy watching the troll pop up from his hidey hole.

Once the ride ended, we poured into the gift shop, and I made DH take his picture with the statue:

Dsc04919.jpg

I giggle, because we take a picture with the troll every trip. I guess it's becoming some sort of tradition.:confused3

With a ride under our belt, DH and I decided it would be best to get back to our schedule. We had decided to devote that day to Future World and were planning to spend tomorrow solely on World Showcase.

As we headed back into Future World, we paused at a PP spot and got a picture taken.

Just looking at it makes me miss Epcot...

I'm glad you enjoyed the food and your mustard at Liberty Inn! I'll have to try it one day.

I love how excited you were over the Lion King topiary and agree if you can't be excited at Disney World when can you be? :confused3

:rotfl: at the lady's comment on Maelstrom!

Hi, Alicia!!!
I stumbled across your TR yesterday and ended up reading the entire thing. The 5K part of the title is what caught my eye, and I'm so glad it did!!

Congrats on your wedding!! I really enjoyed seeing the pics--you were a beautiful bride!!:bride:

You and I sound a lot alike when it comes to getting upset with our DH's!! It was like I was reading about myself at time!!!:rolleyes1

I really, really enjoyed reading about the Expedition Everest Challenge since I'm a runDisney fan...it sounds like a lot of fun, and I hope to be able to try it for myself one day.

I also share your love of Honey Mustard!! It stinks when you get some and it turns out the be the yucky kind. O'Charley's has some of the best, in my opinion!

I have to agree that the lady's comment on Maelstrom made me laugh out loud!!::lmao:

Can't wait to read more!!!

OMG!!! You are too funny about your honey mustard! I am the same way about BBQ sauce in particular, but honestly I can't eat a meal without some sort of sauce...I know its so weird...but I feel like you could understand :lmao:

I LOVE the Lion King topiaries...especially Timon with the grubs!! too cute!! Only Disney does details like that!!

Thanks for the pros and cons list! I am hearing a lot of people have the same issues that you do... whoops that was some awkward wording. You know what I mean (hopefully haha)

Back to the update. Yay for a hilarious "captain" it makes such a difference when the CMs have a great sense of humour. I mean they do work at a magical place but when you think about all the un-magical people they have to deal with eek

Bahaha that lady on Maelstrom. Amazing! :lmao:

To which I responded with, “When you join the DISboards and want ridiculous pictures of every little detail you can get a photo with the card.”
Boom! Exactly! :rotfl:

Thanks for joining in! The Expedition Everest 5K was a lot of fun, and I'm now hooked on runDisney events. I am already planning to compete in the challenge next May, and I'm always trying to get others to do it. So far, I have 3 other family members planning to join.

O'Charley's is one of my favorite honey mustard sauce, as well! I buy the bottles in the grocery stores and use it on most of my chicken based dinners. Seems we have the same taste in honey mustard sauce.

I laughed that you and your DH are like myself and Alex when we argue. It's good to see I'm not the only one who acts like I do when upset with my husband.:rotfl:

I do understand. I think everyone has their go-to sauce, though. Mine is honey mustard, Alex's is ketchup. That boy puts ketchup on almost everything...

Boom! Exactly! :rotfl:

Haha, yeah I understood what you were saying about the issues. A lot of people that I know that are frequent cruisers have told me that the first cruise never goes that well. My father in-law said that after his 1st one, he swore he'd never go on one ever again, but after his 2nd try, he was hooked. :confused3 My friend is trying to get me to go on one next August, so I guess we'll see.

That lady was so funny, just because she said in such a serious tone. It was like, "No duh, we're not the first, do you think we're dumb or something?" And then her reaction when she realized we overheard her...

Alex still doesn't get the whole, I take pictures with everything humanly possible just in case I want to post it on DISboards...maybe by next trip he'll learn.

Thanks for joining in! The Expedition Everest 5K was a lot of fun, and I'm now hooked on runDisney events. I am already planning to compete in the challenge next May, and I'm always trying to get others to do it. So far, I have 3 other family members planning to join.

Have you thought about any of the 1/2 Marathons?? I know it sounds crazy, but they are a lot of fun!! And if I can do it, so can you!! I did last year and this year's Princess and it was such an awesome experience!! I think DH and I are gonna try to shoot for the Wine and Dine next year as well!! You should really think about doing one...I don't think you would regret it. It takes a lot of training, but is so worth it in the end!:thumbsup2

My favorite thing about a cruise is the feeling of timelessness. There's nowhere to be and nothing to do and if we never do anything, it doesn't really matter, because all we have to do is whatever we want. I've never been on a Disney cruise, though and I wonder if that would make a big difference and I'd feel like we had to do it all, because it's Disney.

Anyway, I've never tried the honey mustard at Liberty Inn, but I'll give it a shot next time I'm there. I love good honey mustard and it does seem like it's getting harder to find the good stuff at Disney.

Sounds like some fun riding companions on the Maelstrom.

Caught up on your last update this morning and it looks like you are having such a lovely morning. I, too, love anything honey mustard and I put it on EVERYTHING!
