Lily of the Valley

The Lily of the Valley signifies the return of happiness. Legend tells of the affection of a Lily of the Valley for a nightingale that did not come back to the woods until the flower bloomed in May.

Meanings:

Sweetness, Return to Happiness, Tears of the Virgin Mary, Humility, You've Made My Life Complete

In some parts of England these beautiful lilies are still known by their old name of "May Flowers", and "May lilies", also the very lovely name of "ladders to heaven."

Heavenly smell! Love these plants.

These plants grow their best in a natural setting. Semi-shady, moist slightly clayey soil. Most home gardeners will have a difficult time growing these because you take them out of their natural environment. They need to be planted in area's that are not going to be disturbed.

I have dozens and dozens of these blooming right now! They are getting a little invasive in my shade/woodland garden tho. Smells lovely to walk by!

I must be one of the lucky ones. About 10 years ago I took some from my MIL's garden and planted them along with my hostas. They are doing very well. There are not a lot of them but they do bloom every year -- just about finished now. I will enjoy them now even more.

I always wanted to get Lily of the Valley because it is the May flower - May is my birth month. I made a corner area in the backyard that gets deep shade a hosta area -- I want to add the LOTV there too!

Is there a special time to plant this flower or can I do it anytime I find some and get around to it? -- If this damn rain ever stops!!
