My daughter just got a prescription for Flovent. Does anyone know exactly why you have to rinse your mouth out after using? Also, what might happen if you don't rinse?

If it's anything like the Pulmicort turbuhaler my son uses, you rinse after use to prevent yeast infections to the mouth.

I think that is what my mother uses. The doctor told her to rinse because it is bad for your teeth.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. My 2 yr old uses pulmicort nebulizers and it has this warning on the insert. It also says to keep it from getting in the eyes, and to wash it off any skin that it touches.

Flovent, Pulmicort Turbohaler, and Advair Diskus, will all cause oral yeast infections (thrush) if not rinsed out of the mouth. Having the spray or powder sit in mouth suppresses the natural bacteria in the mouth, allowing candida (yeast) to thrive. You should always drink something after taking a puff. I was also told by a doctor that water doesn't even do a great job of getting it out of the mouth and that mouthwash is a better rinse.

I do find that my son starts getting a very odd smelling *bad* breath when he uses Flovent and only the water or a drink to rinse. If he goes and uses his mouthwash, he seems to be rid of that.

Sores? Maybe that isn't the same thing Mom is taking. I'll have to ask.

The nurse told me you should try to brush your teeth after taking the Advair disk or at least rinse out your mouth.
Same thing when i was on pulmacort also.
