We are planning a trip to WDW the first week of June and have promised DS19 that he could do some east coast surfing. I see from the internet that June is not the best surfing time, but that's when we'll be there. Any advice on the best places to surf on the east coast of Florida? And are any of those "best places" sort of close to Orlando? Thanks!

I do'nt surf but have friends that do. They like New Smyrna (pronounced Suh-mer-na) Beach. It's under 90 minutes from WDW.

The best surfing is supposed to be in September and October.

Well some famous surfers have come from the Cocoa Beach area. :)

I kind of assumed that Cocoa Beach might be the best place (that comment will probably make someone mad), but I really know zippo about Florida's surfing, so I thought I'd ask. And, boy! You people are fast!!

Did you know that there is surfing at Typhoon Lagoon? You will have to check to WDW but they did offer this program in the morning. I know it is not the ocean but...just thought I would let you know.

before you take the drive get a surf report. Not likely to be much at this time of year. Sebastians inlet is popular.

I wouldn't think that Florida has great surfing at any time of the year, even though I know people do it. I think Californians, Hawaiians, and Aussies would be laughing at it, though. ;)

Unless there's an early season hurricane bearing down on the east coast of Florida, I wouldn't waste your time. The surf is typically non-existent during that time of year.

Heck Floridians even laugh about it. :teeth:

Well, rats! Besides Typhoon Lagoon (which I'll certainly check into) any other suggestions on luring my DS19 to WDW/Florida when he thinks he's waaaaay too old for that? He loved our Disney Cruise, but mainly because of all the fun he had in the Stack (when he was 16).

if you can have the 19yo bring a friend. That would help. Otherwise, have him pick some family time and then do things on his own. I have two 19yos and I know they wouldn't really want to do disney with me. Now the 22yo does, but didn't when she was 19 either.

My DH (37) loves to surf, two years ago, I surprised him with the surfing lessons at Typhoon Lagoon for Father's Day, he loved it!!!!!

I grew up in South Florida and hung out with surfers all through my high school years. AS a kid, I thought the waves were pretty big, but on the east coast of Florida, like others said, you aren't going to find that many "big" waves. If you hit a storm you may get 3-4 foot waves. Anyway, I remember getting up before the sun came up and heading to Sebastian Inlet many, many mornings. There was a surfing name for that spot, but for the life of me I can't remember it. When we went to Vero (DVC) a few years ago, the waves were pretty big but they were all breaking right on shore. These places would be pretty to go visit, but you may be more satisfied at trying the surfing at Typhoon Lagoon.

....those were the days!
