I'm interested in hearing if there is anyone out there who lives in Florida, with a child with autism, who is happy enough with their school system to recommend it to other ASD kids.

My DH graduates from college in December and will be looking for a job as a teacher - we really need to stay in FL as I have 3 bright futures kids up and coming, but I also have my kindergartener with ASD. We are currently in Santa Rosa County but I would really love to hear from other FL residents, do you like your school?

I live in Tallahassee. We've only been here a year, but the schools were a big concern for me, since my son is Aspergers. I live on the NorthEast side, (its Leon County) and I was very happy with the help my son received last year. He attended DeSoto Trail Elementary, and is schedule to attend Montford Middle School, which is just opening this year. I'm hoping it will be another good experience. I'm nervous about the transition, but I'm trying to remain positive!!

Thanks for your input! I was actually thinking Tallahassee might be a good place to look since there is also a university there. :thumbsup2

two things...Florida actually has a few schools for autistic kids only. don't remember where they all are. I know one was near orlando. they may be public. also, if your child has an IEP you may be eligible for the mcvay scholarship. that would help with private school costs. My DS is an aspie/HFA. He has always been in a regular classroom, never special needs rooms. He goes to Little Flower Catholic over here in pensacola. Great school! if your child is high functioning it might be an option for you. It isn't as expensive as you would think. also, if you have to stay in the area. DS went elementary school at Sherwood here in Pensacola. The teachers are just wonderful there. One of my friends boys was in the special ed class there and the teacher is fantastic! I put my son in private school because he is in middle school. if you are in the area you know what that means.

there is a special needs school in niceville too.
