Florida...Here we go again...Francis is on the rampage..

We are just west of WDW. Last night, we went to Sam's in Kissimmee. They had what looks like one pallet of 12-packs of D batteries. We bought 2 (to add to what we had left from Charley). If you live in Florida and you still need to buy batteries, water, plywood, whatever, you are running out of time.

The only thing we need is ice. That is one of those things that you can't buy TOO early, but you can't wait.

I only hope that we luck out like we did with Charley. We were able to buy ice that Friday morning at the lcoal Publix. We had to call every 15 to 30 minutes starting at 6:00am to see if the shipment came in. We were there before they had the truck unloaded. It was funny to see Holly roll a cart out of the back door of the store with 10, 20 pound bags of ice on her cart. She was handing them out like a relief worker!

On a lighter note, this summer, we bought a new cooler for beach trips. It is a nice, big Coleman XTreme. It claims to hold ice for 5 days. We put 60 pounds of ice in it and it actually froze our drinks.

Definitely a good investment is you need a cooler. We got it at Walmart.

For those who have pets - do you have crates for the dogs and carriers for the cats? Might make them feel a bit more secure if you have to ride out the storm..

Frances is going through an eyewall replacement cycle. There's a chance she could gain strength at the end of the cycle.

:( :( :( :(

FYI...we fled New Orleans for Hurricane Georges to Texas. We had several dogs and they stayed with us at a no-pets Best Western. The place was PACKED with dogs and no one there cared at all. It was survival.

Just please got far...why not Mississippi???

What is that tiny island the hurricane is headed for? Is that part of the Bahamas?
I believe that would be Grand Turk Island. It is not part of the Bahamas, but part of the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is where I got married and spent my honeymoon 6 years ago. It is an awesomely beautiful place, I hope they fare well. :(

I hope everyone in the path of this hurricane fares well. As a survivor of Hurricane Andrew, I know what everyone is going through now and what they will go through in the aftermath, and my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Just heard on sports radio that they are considering postponing the Miami verses Florida State Football game that was to be played in Miami this Saturday.

Still hoping it turns away and north

School was just cancelled for Orange County (Orlando) school for Friday in anticipation of Hurricane Frances.

What are officials saying in Orlando about evacuations etc. We're planning on ARRIVING in Orlando on Friday or Saturday (no I'm not kidding) morning and wonder if we're going to be ordered away. Or is Orlando pretty confident that damage will not be so severe that Frances can't be ridden out.

The schools here in Broward county will be closed tomorrow. I guess I better do some laundry.

DH just spoke with the person who looks after our condo in Vero Beach when we are not there. He says the predictions for damage are very severe. The barrier island (where Disney's VB Resort is located) has to be evacuated by 11:00 AM tomorrow (Thursday). Sometime after that, those on the mainland east of the railroad tracks will be evacuated also. If we were in VB we would be in a gym someplace.

DH had called him to ask him to take DH's fish bait (those cute little sand fleas) out of our freezer in case the electricity goes out. The caretaker said that, according to predictions, we won't have to worry about it because we will be lucky if the place is still standing! If it is, he will look after the freezer at that time.

Now I'm getting really frightened. We may have to drive down next week to survey the damage.

I posted on another thread that DS, who lives in Jupiter, called this morning and said he and family made ressies in Pensacola for Fri-Mon. We are about 8 hours from there and will go and meet them. Hope Francis doesn't decide to go across the state, into the gulf and back up there. Looking for the silver lining, my mom will go with us this weekend, she has not seen her great grand children since April 03, so she will love seeing them.

Some schools are closing, and we are getting a little rain here already---looks like this will be a REALLY wet storm due to it being so big! Pahokee has a tornado warning All ready! I will be working tomorrow, going in at 4:00am.:o

Just wanted to say God bless all of you in Florida and I'll be praying for all of you as this monster hits. Once it happens you may not be DISing for a while! We're all thinking of you.
I'm also worried about the Disney CMs at Castaway Cay. Hope they leave today with the Wonder.
Robin M.

Supposably Orlando is going to get a direct hit again. Thats what the rader is showing but you still never know till then. I hope you all keep safe.

Are you sure this is correct? That game is scheduled for Monday night.

I changed my plans to arrive Sunday to stay away from Frances. I was planning on arriving Sunday. I will be praying for all of you this weekend.

I am alrerady thinking I will take off work Friday.
Even last night ther was talk about making BOTH sides of I4 one way -- heading west to help with evacuation. (Starting Friday)
Agree a local Hess station LAST night was out of gas.
I am afraid this will make Charley look like a walk in the park.

I always liked being in hurricanes myself...wierd I know...

But, I understand the damage and destruction they can 'cause. My thoughts and prayers go out to Florida right now...two in a row...ya'all are some tough cookies!

Are you sure that is from the hurricane? It's still awfully far away according to all the weather sites I've seen.

Or is this just your normal Florida type afternoon weather? I spoke with others from FL today that said they had bad storms yesterday & lost power & phones last night for a while....but nothing related from the hurricane.

Stay safe.

Spoke w/ MIL last night also. She's on Bouchelle Island, New Smyrna Beach. She & her boyfriend from Edgewater (home on the Indian River) will be leaving tomorrow to head for his son's house in GA. I really hope that ONE of them at least has a home to return too.

300,000 urged to evacuate in Palm Beach County

Other evacuations:
Martin County | St. Lucie County | Okeechobee County

By Deana Poole
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 1

Up and down the eastern coast of Florida, county emergency officials braced for the worst from Hurricane Frances, ordering the mandatory evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents on barrier islands, near the coastline and in mobile homes.

A state of emergency was declared in Palm Beach County Wednesday afternoon, with county officials ordering the mandatory evacuation of about 300,000 residents living in mobile homes, east of U.S. 1, and along the edge of Lake Okeechobee.

The evacuation order is effective 2 p.m. Thursday. At the same time, hurricane shelters will be opened across the county.

"We urge all residents to take this very seriously," said County Commission Chairwoman Karen Marcus during a news conference that the county's now-activated emergency operations center. "There is no more time for delay. Secure your home."

While the National Hurricane Center remained uncertain about where Hurricane Frances will make landfall, county officials were preparing for winds anywhere from 75 mph to 140 mph and a storm surge of up to 10 feet.

They said Palm Beach County hasn't been hit by a hurricane of this magnitude since 1947. "It is nothing to take lightly," said Vince Bonvento, assistant county administrator.

Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast is only a small part of Hurricane Frances' "cone of probability," but it is in the middle of that cone.

"It could be anywhere along the east coast of Florida, but especially in an area from the southeast Florida coast to perhaps around the Cape Canaveral area," National Hurricane Center specialist Stacy R. Stewart said.

And, the storm could be at Category 5, the highest level of the Saffir-Simpson scale, when it makes landfall.

Frances is approaching Florida at a northwest angle, and because the coast is also at an angle, the storm is close to paralleling the coast. That was the problem with Charley, which appeared aimed right at Tampa, then made a tiny shift to the right that brought it ashore at Punta Gorda.

Stewart said a 30 mile deviation on either side of center means the difference between Frances striking Broward County or Cape Canaveral.

Stewart said up to 10 inches of rain could fall in 24 to 36 hours.

By 9 a.m. Friday, the county is expected to experience winds topping 39 mph. Hurricane force winds exceeding 75 mph are expected to reach Palm Beach County by midnight Friday.

Palm Beach County gradually will shut down late Thursday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Frances:

• Public schools will close three hours early Thursday, starting with elementary schools at 11 a.m. By 1 p.m. all public schools will be shut down. Schools will remain closed on Friday.

• All county and state offices will close at noon Thursday, as well as the Port of Palm Beach.

• Bridges to barrier islands will be closed to automobile traffic at 9 a.m. Friday until further notice.

• Trash and garbage collection will be suspended on Friday. Collection hours will be extended today and Thursday in hopes of clearing streets and yards of debris. No collection is expected over the weekend.

• Palm Tran service will be suspended Friday and Saturday.

• Palm Beach International Airport will close once sustained winds reach 50 mph — possibly by late Friday morning. Travelers should check with airlines on flight cancellations and other delays before going to PBIA.

Martin County evacuations

In Martin County, residents of barriers islands, manufactured homes and mobile homes will be ordered to evacuate effective noon Thursday, according to Martin County officials.

Sewall's Point residents area also included in the order.

Shelters will open at noon for evacuees at at Jensen Beach Elementary School, Warfield Elementary, Seawind Elementary and Crystal Lake Elementary in Martin County. A special needs shelter will open at Challenger School for those who have preregistered and they will be notified. Those who go to shelters should bring comfortable clothing, at least a gallon of water per person, all necessary medications and bedding. No pets, alcohol, or firearms are allowed.

Officials recommend those who plan to leave the area avoid going to the west coast which is still recovering from Hurricane Charlies and suggested a better plan would be to head north out of state.

It's expected St. Lucie County will order a similar evacuation, but officials were still meeting Wednesday afternoon.

St. Lucie County evacuations

St. Lucie County is also recommending evacuation of mobile homes, manufactured homes and the barrier islands begining at noon Thursday. A list of shelters will be issued later.

Officials were discouraging motorists from attempting to flee, saying no part of the state was safe at this point. They also feared gridlock on the turpike and interstate highways. They suggested staying elsewher within the county if they feel their homes are not safe. They said shelters, with limited space, should be considered a last resort.

Okeechobee County evacuations

Okeechobee County will have a mandatory evacuation of mobile homes and unsafe, wooden structures beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday. Shelters will be open at 4 p.m.

------------------------------------

Reccomendations are to go north out of state - not west.. :(
Sounds like they suspect signigicant damage not only on the coast, but right up through the central part of Florida - Orlando included..

Just how secure are the buildings in WDW? I don't mean the hotels - but the parks themselves? Anyone know?
