From the AAA website - apologies if it's been mentioned before
I'm not sure of the impact, if any, on hire car policies.

Thirty-six years ago, mandatory No-Fault insurance in the form of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Coverage was established in Florida. In its most basic form, this means that if you are injured as a result of an automobile accident, regardless of who is at fault, your own insurance company pays your medical expenses.

Unless Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida legislature intervene, No-Fault will expire on October 1, 2007. Since your auto insurance policy may no longer provide PIP Coverage, you might want to consider including or increasing other coverage and purchasing additional insurance to protect the vulnerability caused by the loss of PIP.

Currently, vehicle owners must show proof of PIP and Property Damage Liability coverages when registering a vehicle. If PIP expires, the Department of Motor Vehicles will still require that motorists provide proof of Property Damage Liability Coverage. The DMV had previously announced that there would be no insurance requirement for registration but communicated a change in position last week. Also, if you are involved in an accident or receive certain traffic citations, you will also need to show proof of Bodily Injury Liability Coverage. There are consequences for failure to comply. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles will have information on the elimination of PIP on October 1, 2007.
