Refinishing basement and they left off cost of flooring. They go through a flooring company and we'll have to get an estimate from them separately. Basement is one room that will have wall dividing into 2. We will carpet one part and some sort of tiles on second part. Each part is about 240 square feet. And the steps going upstairs will need to be carpeted too. What cost should I count on? We don't want high end, just durable. We are figuring $2000-3000.

I'm not sure of costs. Maybe Lowes or Home Depot will have an estimator you could use.

I just wanted to caution you about carpet on a basement floor. The vapor barrier was such an added cost that we just decided to have tile and an area rug.

Depends on what you want. I got a flyer in the mail today and their sale prices are $1.11 a square foot for the cheapest contractors grade carpet to $5.59 a square foot for hardwood.
So $532.80 to $2683.20 for materials plus a flat $1 a square foot installation adds $480 to those prices. so $2-3,000 seems in the ballpark.

I'd expect $4-5/sqft for carpet installed with the pad, or $6-8 for tile. I don't know anything about vapor barriers on basement floors, though.

there are several cost calculators on the web that will give you the cost, labor, materials, how long it takes, per sq foot, based on your zipcode
