Flight question

Not really related to Disney but transportation related. My family is moving cross country this spring and I am looking for flights (one-way) and finding that the round trip tickets are muck cheaper than the one ways. Can I buy round trip tickets and just not show for the return leg??? I don't need the return leg but it seems odd to have to pay more for one way tickets when I can get cheaper round trippers.

I have done this in the past, not since the increased security due to 9/11 but before that. Never had a problem. It is weird but R/T is almost always cheaper thasn 1 way on most airlines.
