can I still use the Magical Express luggage service, given that the bags are not likely to arrive on the carousel until after 5 am, or will DME not take bags from my fight since it's scheduled arrival time is before 5 am?

I can't provide the expert response to this, but here's what I can tell you. You can still use the "yellow" luggage tags and your luggage will be shipped to your resort in the range of 3 - 4 hours after your arrival. While you can still check-in early in the AM, your luggage will be held at the resort until your room is ready and delivered sometime after that. In the rare event that your room is ready when you arrive, it will still take some time for your luggage to be delivered.

I would probably chance it. The bags might hit the carousel so I would take my time walking to DME and talk to them about it. See what they say.

4:55 is pretty close to 5 and I imagine the employees would be there by the time the bags are making their way through the airport. So I might try it. Obviously you know the official line of it starting at 5am.

Once you talk to "them" you are at the welcoming area. Not easy to go all the way back to the carousels at this point in time if "they say" that you should have gotten your bags first..

So it is better to just go by the clock. If the plane door is opened* before 5 then you go to the carousels. If your bags don't show up then file a claim with your airline before leaving.

If it is 5 AM or after when the plane door opens then proceed directly to the welcoming area and don't start the conversation about baggage.

* All Magical Express guests on a given plane are treated the same way.

I'd put the yellow tags on my luggage. Take your time heading out of the terminal and swing by baggage claim to see if they've popped up. If so, grab them and go to DME. If not, go to DME. This way you won't have to double-back to the baggage carousel. To me, it's totally worth spending 15 mins. at baggage claim to make sure someone ELSE is handling my luggage!

I am assuming that there are many Disney guests that don't even pay any mind to DME's luggage handling hours, and therefore people who arrive after 10pm and before 5am use the yellow tags and don't pick up their luggage and don't give it a second thought. I would have to guess that DME has some measures in place to handle that, or perhaps airport employees are instructed to do something with those bags. I would think the bags would still end up at your resort, but maybe later than normal. All of this is pure speculation my part, but I'm just thinking of my clueless friends and family that would unknowingly do something like that.

I agree with the PP, I'm sure all yellow tagged bags make it to the room. I would put the yellow tags on and head to ME.

The devil's advocate says that there must be a few exceptions. For example if the bag happened to get onto the carousel and got pilfered by some unknown third party.

If the plane arrived at the gate after 5 AM but the Magical Express baggage interceptors were tardy, then such a pilfered bag would be DME's responsibility.
