I keep a price in my head which I consider a good deal, $300 from Denver round trip. If the price ever goes below that I buy, regardless of the timing. It may go down further but I remind myself I got a price I was happy with.

We are going with extended family Dec 1-7. In Feb we got tickets for $188! Thats my new record "good-deal."

In my experience the best rates for Southwest start at about the 3 month mark. Of course with Southwest there is no penalty cancel and rebook if the fares go down later as long as you will be planning to fly again before the day you first bought the tickets so you can use your credit.

Also, when comparing prices don't forget that on Southwest the first two pieces of checked luggage are free.
