Hi all. Can't believe it's come round so quickly - we fly off on Saturday! However ... part of me is dreading the flight home. I'm not a happy bunny flying any time, although I do it. But I haven't flown at night for a long time, because it scares me too much (I have a very vivid imagination). I have pills to take which help a bit, but .....Any tips? Or reassurances?

I suppose one thing to focus on is that planes fly just as well in the dark as they do in daylight. Solar-powered planes are generally not used by trans-atlantic airlines!

I try to pass the time on the flight home by planning my next visit to Orlando. Helps the hours pass if I can't sleep.

Regards

Rob

Wow --- whiskey AND Xanax! I take Temesta, which really helps, but I haven't done a long flight on it before. If I could fall asleep before take off and wake up on landing, I'd be delighted!!

I'm the same i hate flying :(
I always think (wild imagination also) that something will happen.

Going im not too bad, coming home last year was the worsest even though i slept alot,i did manage to fit in being sick on landing and having to leap out of my seat before the plane landed, and make myself confortable in the toilet!! it was horrid.
I'm going to take Kalms this time, and see how i go...i just hate being in the air full stop, but its all worth it.

To take you mind off it all, deep breaths, watch the movies if they have any good ones on,if not make a diary of what you have done on your trip and what you enjoyed or didnt,or even take you brochure and have a look for your next trip!! bear in mind it was all worth it!!!

P,s Good luck!!

Hi Nanoo,

I can understand your nervousness with flying, I also used to be really bothered by it. I have however worked through it but Turbulance still bothers me .

Just remember that flying is the safest mode of transport, safer than walking, driving, train rides, taxi's and buses.

Flying at night is really no difference to flying during daylight to your pilots. There is usually less turbulence at night due to the heat having died down. Remember also that turbulence is a comfort issue not a safety issue.

For your travel sickness I have found that Stugeron works really well, also nibble on ginger biscuits or chew crystallised ginger.

For the nervousness buy a Rescue remedy spray and use it as necessary.

Most fearful flyers are very intelligent people with a very vivid imagination!!! thats is what causes us the problems. We create a movie in our head that we call the A movie the trick is to change your thoughts to a nicer relaxing movie called the B movie.

Hope this helps and good luck!!!!!

Hi Nanoo,

I'm not a particular fan of flying either, I tend to try and not think about the fact that we're at 30,000 feet......but everything is so worth it when you get there.
I can't sleep on a flight, but with 2 DS's at 3 & 4 I rarely get the chance!!!

Thanks for your reassuring words. I cannot believe it is finally a couple of days away, and that (God willing) we will be in Orlando on Sunday!! I have planned so much for this trip, not something I would usually do for a holiday, but this is my first Orlando visit. Apart from the fear of flying, I am SO excited!!! 47 years old and ready to be a big kid again for a week. Tell you all when we get back!

I'm a very nervous flyer, too and the journey home is always worse.

I take Diazepam and alcohol (with my GPs approval). It helps.

I've done a 'Fear of Flying' course which was a great help. I've posted about it many times before. I'll try to post some links to previous threads. A couple of things to remember which specifically relate to what you've said:

Flying at night is actually safer because planes are lit up and easier to see. Not that the pilots need to see at all.

And that imagination of yours. Each time you start to run the video in your head, tell yourself, STOP. You might have to do it a lot, but keep doing it. Force yourself to think about something else.

I've not found a magic cure, but I have got a whole arsenal of coping strategies. Every little helps.

I made a contribution to one of the threads Debbie has linked to and so all that remains for me to say is ..... have a wonderful time! ... and I hope that the posts on those threads and this one are helpful to you.. concentrate on being there and not the getting there if you can :) ........ WDW is waiting for you!!

I have suffered from different types of anxiety over the years (I was once agoraphobic and hardly left the house for a year).

Nannoo,
Everybody suffers from one sort of fear or another, the secret to conquering the fear is knowing that you cant be hurt by the fear alone. My advice to you would be twofold. first of all take a real good look at the people around you at the airport and you will surely find people who are in the same situation as you are (they're not difficult to spot, always wiping the sweat from their palms etc). It's always comforting to know that you are not alone. And secondly when you are on the plane take a good look at the cabin crew, because if there was any possibility of something happening up there would they look so happy, I doubt it very much. Statistics say that you have a better chance of winning the lottery TWICE than being involved in a passenger plane incident. So try not to worry about flying and focus on your holiday and the great time you are about to have.

Unfortunately it took 3 years of mild anti-depressants to get me to realise that confidence is within yourself and not down to happenings around you, so try just to focus on the good things that YOU will experience or have just done so.

Hope this helps a bit

Peewakio, thank you so much for your very honest response. I wasn't too bad going (had my trusty pills to take) but I spent much of the time there worrying about the journey home, which was a real shame as it spoiled the holiday. Typhoon Lagoon managed to take my mind off it for half a day, but otherwise it was always "lurking". Such a shame .... but thank you again for your kind words.
