Flat restaurant surcharge per check

"Temporary"......

R.58f07af32b657ec3bd72f27c0d54378a

I went there today for lunch (another BOGO offer) and the fee is gone.

My vet's office just called and told me there is now a fee for cc transactions. :sad2:

Whether the fee is passed as a surcharge, a cc fee, or added into the price, we seem to be paying more for everything in our area. When I go out to eat, I tip well/pay the fees but I go less often now. The cc fees for places like the vet or at stores stink, as we use cc for everything possible. We earn miles and points, and then pay the cc off and use the points for travel. I do understand that the vendors need to make a profit, but it will impact how often I dine out/where I shop.

Can't charge a fee for debit cards, can't charge a fee in 2 states, it's debatable in several others. I am pretty much cashless and will go elsewhere if they want to charge me a credit card fee. Plenty of places to choose from. It's exceptionally annoying though when businesses who have gone cashless now charge a fee for me to use my card. REALLY???

I am in a travel group on FB and some people were posting about how places that are not supposed to be able to charge the fees still are. :(

I have yet to encounter a business that won't accept cash.

If they charge a fee for CC use, then I just use my debit card. I too use the CC for everything for points, but it's not smart paying a 2.5% fee (understandable that businesses want to recoup this fee unless they don't accept anything else) to get 1% cash back.

Madison Square Garden food vendors = no cash

Happened last weekend

A lot of stadiums have gone that way. One of the last ones I went to had stations outside the gates where people could load a prepaid card with cash before they entered if they needed to.
Just about all of them are. I was at a concert two weeks ago and it was the same thing, no cash accepted anywhere in the venue, you could buy a prepaid debit card if you only had cash. Lambeau Field announced they will not be accepting any cash this season. Not great for the beer vendors that used to make a lot of money in tips.

I have multiple times, even our local Car Wash chain is cashless and only will take a card. A local Pizza joint we like (order at the counter, no wait staff) will let you pay in Cash but will not give you any change, several other restaurants though will not accept cash that we patronize.

Per the Federal Reserve: "There is no federal statute mandating that a private business, a person, or an organization must accept currency or coins as payment for goods or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether to accept cash unless there is a state law that says otherwise."

Yes the Orlando Magic's Amway Arena has been Cashless since pre pandemic, However it defaults to the 20% tip for the beer vendor and takes a second to manually change it if you wish

Correct, a vast misunderstanding in this country. The 'legal tender must be accepted..." thing is for debts owed. You must accept payment from cash for debts owed. You don't owe any debt at the point of sale for product because you don't own said product until you pay. People don't understand that.

Ate out at a Mexican restaurant the other day. As usual, Marie takes part of her meal home, too much. At this place, a styrofoam container. When we got the bill, there was a 50 cents charge labeled as 'Custom Charge'. Having never seen a Custom Charge on a restaurant bill, or any bill that I can recall, I asked what it was. Cashier said it was for the styrofoam container. :confused3

I've been there. I pulled out my cash when I was told the business was cashless. The only cash this business accepted was in their tip jar.

I hope this makes it more normal to bring your own container - better for the planet!

As for the on-the-menu surcharges, I get it, but I'd rather see them just raise the prices.

For cash vs. credit cards, I've historically avoided using credit cards for small transactions because I felt bad that the businesses were charged processing fees, so I definitely understand.

The other day we picked new meds through drive thru. We thought she said $83.10, do you want that on CC on file. We said yes. We got the bag. It was 83 cents. We felt so bad abut that.

It is my understanding that the CC fees are a percentage of the transaction, thus it doesn't matter the amount, they are charged x% for the transaction.

The $0.83 paid with a CC would be $0.03 rounded to the nearest cent with 3% fee.

I always see numbers such as 2.5 or 3% stated as the fee the CC charges. If so, then the retailers that are charging 4.5% to recoup CC fees are scamming big time.

Many processors charge a dollar amount and then the percentage. When I ran a restaurant it was $0.10 plus 3%. That was 10 years ago.

I’m showing up late to this thread……

I am STRONGLY against any business charging extra charges, regardless what it is for. In regards to a restaurant, the minute you decide to open a restaurant you know that people are going to pay with credit cards, people are going to order take out, people are going to order water and the list can go on and on. To charge extra is wrong wrong wrong. There are some costs business owners have to deal with - it’s the cost of doing business. When I go to a restaurant and they charge me extra to use my credit card, it is the last time we will go there. If a restaurant feels like they need to nickle and dime their customers, then slightly raise your prices - I’d much rather have that, then charging for credit card use, take out containers and etc.

*I was a small business owner, so I understand very well about the cost of doing business. I would never ever tell my customers they would be charged more to use their credit card or a bag to put their item in - it’s just ludicrous for me to even think about. As you can probably tell, I feel very strongly about this. My rant is now over - LOL!
