Flat Irons

We have thick, coarse, wavy/curly hair and have always had the moderate priced flat irons. Until I walked into Ulta and found a Chi(red one) on clearance for $50. I bought one for my daughter and she loved it. I ended up getting one for myself too. Boy, what a difference. I had no idea how great a flatiron could be. My straightening time is cut by 25% and my hair has never felt this soft.

I have tried every professional and basic hair products out there and nothing helped the frizzy, coarseness of my hair until the chi.

FYI, I just remembered last night there was an insert from JCPenny Salon in our Sunday paper on APril 26th. I pulled mine out of the recycling bin this morning and they have 25% off CHI tools, exp their CHI diva iron or pink iron are $109.99, which is a little more than the one on sale at Target, but this should have the warranty with it. They also have buy 1 and 50% off CHI and Biosilk products, plus their other hair products and OPI nail products, love them too. This sale goes through May 10th! I will be there this week.

Oh, if you can find the insert, there is a $10 Off bonus coupon for purchases over $40. Yeah

It's probably the quality of your iron. Did you get highlights with lightener (would probably be blue or purple and have a fluffy quality) or color (would most likely be a beige color and more like a shampoo consistency). Both are damaging, but the lightener is more damaging. That could contribute to frizzies, but it's probably the straightener. I'd also recommend a serum rather than a gel.

It was actually color, I bought a Chi and some Biosilk this weekend, big sale at JC Penny salon. I have used both only once and I can tell a BIG differene already. Thanks for all your help!

Do you mind me asking what you paid? And...is the sale still going on today?

Sorry the sale ended Sunday May 10th, I got the Chi for $109, normally $149.99 and the Biosilk was buy one and get 50% off one. Then they had a $10 coupon if you purchase over $50.

We just got one at Costco for 60 bucks, seems only some stores carry it. Costco has some different models on their website. Best thing about costco is if it burns out you can return it for a refund at anytime!! Love the chi, its works great!

Just remember that any professional products and tools bought anywhere other than licensed salons are not guaranteed. They could be counterfeits, expired or defective. Your only recourse would be through the seller, as the companies only guarantee items bought through the proper channels.

Can you tell I'm on the Anti-Diversion (diversion is the term for those questionable items that are sold at mass retailers, etc.) team? :rotfl:

I believe it is a genuine CHI product. Took it to my friends salon to compare it with the one she sells. It is the exact same product in the exact same box. She was on the phone with her supplier to complain about it.

In any case you can't beat costco's return policy!! You can return anything for any reason at any time. The only restrictions are TV's cameras computers and ipods which have a 90 return policy.

Does CHI make a flat iron wider than 1"? I'm thinking about investing in a good iron, but I like mine a little wider.

I'm just saying that Farouk Systems (CHI manu.) is not liable for anything regarding an iron not purchased in a salon. It could very well be a genuine CHI, but it could be a defective CHI (which you wouldn't know by looking at it) or a diverted CHI. You'll probably be fine, but any problems could only be taken to the seller (whether a result of manufacturer error or not).

Yes, they have a 1.5 and 2 inch iron.

I'm curious if anyone has tried the GHD flat iron, I'm looking for a new one (but don't want a Chi, this one takes all the body out of my hair - I don't like poker straight for me). Thanks :thumbsup2

Our supplier lent us one for two weeks. I used it Friday. It's ver similar to the CHI except it is more rounded, so curls are a little tighter (when using the iron to curl).

If you straighten against the direction of growth and do a little flip at the ends, you won't get stick straight hair.

Do you think the GHD's are worth the money?
I have been looking around at them on line today and found a couple of sites that have them cheaper than Sephora, but, anything higher than $150 seems crazy to me :confused3.
I'm afraid I will get it & not see much difference.
I have tried Chi (made my fine, wavy hair to straight and seemed to really dry/damage my hair), Solia (snagged my hair) and right now I'm using a Hai (its good, but, leaves my hair dull looking, without shine, even with serums).

It's very similar to the CHI. It sounds like you may just have damaged hair. Do you color, highlight, etc.? Do you have dry hair to begin with? When using an iron do you use a heat protector and/or serum before ironing? Do you use other heat styling tools (blowdryer, curling iron)?

Yes to all :lmao:. My hair tends to be dry - I have that 'want to be curly hair' that just waves and frizzes up.

:rotfl: Do a deep conditioning once a week (either in the salon or at home). Give your hair a break!! My hair was massively damaged after I got out of hair school (new color every week, heat styling practice, etc.). I just let it rest for about 6 months. Not that you can't do anything to it (or that you have to chill that long), but try letting it air dry, then flat iron or blow dry with a diffuser so there's little, if any need, for smoothing (it will take on a wavy texture).

Deep conditioning at home: Get a deep coniditioner from Ulta or your stylist (K-Pak works well). Do your regular shampoo then wring out your hair in the shower (get as much moisture out as possible so your hair soaks up the conditioner instead of the water). Apply the deep conditioner and slip on a shower cap. Get out and relax for 30 minutes (or do housework in your towel :rotfl:). If you want, you can blast some hot air from your dryer for a while. After 30 minutes, hop back in and rinse. This will be a day you need to air dry (otherwise it defeats the purpose). I usually do this on a Sunday evening so there's no need for heat styling (or anytime we have downtime in the salon). It won't be a miraculous change after the first treatment, but there will be a notceable difference. The more you do it, the more it helps. :thumbsup2
