My friend participated in a Glee flash mob in Seattle yesterday. I think this is the coolest trend ever! What's better than random acts of spontaneous dance?

And for those who haven't heard of the flash mob craze you have to see this!

I think somebody needs to organize a Down town disney flash mob!!
(well they had a freeze frame one there, but I like the dancing ones)

When I read Flash Mob I was thinking of the Philly incidents too because they are called Flash Mobs. The whole thing is so scary I'm not setting foot in that city anytime soon. No zoo, no amusement parks, nothing at all down there worth the risk.

The Glee thing sounds nice though but maybe it needs a different name.

Oh No!
Yeah that's not the kind of flash mob I'm talking about!
I'm talking about the spontaneous dancing, or freezing, or dressing up like best buy workers flash mob. The kind that make people smile!!

If it's all rehearsed, how is it a spontaneous flash mob? Granted, I'm pretty clueless about flash mobs, but I thought that were more spur of the moment things, not rehearsed shows.

I too thought of the recent ban on flash mobs in Philly. Flash mobs have been around for years. Nothing new.

The key, as in this Seattle one too, is that there are usually many more people around than on any given normal day. In Seattle's case, 1000 more people than usual. Kind of hard not to notice.

Geocaching even has flash mobs events that last exactly 15 minutes though I've never attended one.

Oh no, they are rehearsed, but they are meant to look spontaneous! I guess they aren't technically spontaneous.

I would have loved to have been in that train station for the sound of music one. So fun!

Maybe they need to think of a new name for the happy type of flash mobs!
Here is the freeze one from DTD. I think the proposing couple is cute! :)

I HATE that our Philadelphia news started calling them flash mobs. The GOOD kind have existed for a while and deserves the name. What's going on in Philadelphia is just nonsense. I wouldn't dignify it with the name.

When I posted this I had never heard of a bad flash mob, just the good kind!
I had no idea!

I think a diser participated in this. It was in Disneyland, not WDW.

The video is kind of long because they walk you through the whole thing, but once it starts the flash freeze, it's pretty cool. The DD part starts around 4:37 into it

Enjoy

ETA: If the link doesn't work, just type in Disney Flash Mob into the search on youtube

I LOVE things like this. Seeing so many people dancing and singing just makes me smile.:goodvibes

Thanks!
I actually found the freeze one, but I was hoping there was a dancing one.
The freeze one is super cool though!

Dance Flash Mobs are great fun and take a certain amount of work. Usually the dancers get together to practice for a few hours in advance. They'll organize into smaller groups and have preset signals to perform.

The idea of any true flash mob is blend in with the normal crowd in a location then at the given signal perform. Those non-participating bystanders get a huge thrill out of it (after the initial confusion wears off) and some even join in.

Most of the dance steps are fairly simple. Only a select few perform the initial more complicated maneuvers, and they tend to be from a performance background (dance schools, etc.)

The Philadelphia thing is a Riot Mob. The sort of thing you see breaking out during blackouts, post some sporting events, and after some political news event (like a controversial trial verdict?). As usual, the idiot media gets their terminology wrong.

The Fun Flash Mobs aren't just for dancing or freezing. They've done "pantless subway riders", everyone dress as Mario (from Mario Brothers) and during the recent February blizzards in DC they did snowball flash mobs. All organized via Facebook and Twitter. (Something noteworthy from friending everyone that pops up on your suggested list.)

I believe the Dance Flash Mob craze began a couple years ago when Tmobile organized one in the London subway. It was so cool, everyone wanted to try it. By far the Belgium Sound of Music one is the best choreographed and filmed. You can see the crowd really getting into it themselves. And as soon as the music ends, the performers all go back to reality as if nothing happened.

The Seattle one looks very good too except that afterward the performers give away their planned part and cheer. If they'd just gone back to blending in, it would've been perfect.

I did witness some CMs putting on a bit of a dance flash mob last New Years during Osborne Lights. They only had about 12 people but it was great fun.

I would LOVE to see Disney do one! They have the resources, props, costumes, music, and unsuspecting crowd to do an awesome one.
I know they already do street party's and things like that, but I think it's the surprise element that makes these so much fun.

That would be my daughter & I who participated in the Downtown Disney flashmob. You can see us in the parking structure where we all met before going to Downtown Disney, but I haven't seen a video at DD that shows us. Most of the videos were taken in one area, and we were at the other end of DD. Next time I want to be one of the people taking pics. There were some good poses not shown in the video. :)

Oh that's so cool! I wish you were in a video so we could see it!!
How did you come to participate in it?

I think I first heard it on the DIS - not sure. But I saw it on FaceBook & joined through there.
