Flash Mob on DL's Birthday

It was pretty exciting, in a fun, bring-out-the-child-n-you sort of way.

I was doing some pin trading in Frontierland, at 4pm. I knew there was to be a group singing of Happy Birthday followed by "something special" at 4:15pm. So, I made my way to the Hub, arriving about 4:10pm. I joined the gathered crowd, taking a place about 3 people deep near the Emporium.

When "the voice" came over the speakers with nice words about Disneyland, a man in the FRONT row picked up his not-so-small (7? 8?) year old daughter who had a front row seat on the curb and put her on his shoulders. (I knew some of you would LOVE that!) A few of us politely said something to him. He turned and asked in a very surprised way, "Oh! Is she blocking you?" Uh - yes. He put her back down in the front row and back to the voice in the sky our focus shifted.

Everyone joined in singing "Happy Birthday" to Disneyland. Then, there was this odd silence. - Is that it? Do we go now? Ropes are still blocking us in, though. Hmmm..... - Then, music started up. The side gate / wall by the Mad Hatter shop opened and hundreds of CMs in their outfits came running out and took a spot all along the Hub. Then - Mickey. And Minnie. And Donald. And Daisy. And and and..... And they just kept coming. It was amazing!

Characters everywhere! All sorts of characters! They took various spots around the Hub as well and the characters and CMs all did a choreographed Flash Mob dance. From the viewing perspective it was a mixture of:

"OMG!"
"Wow! Look! It's ________ (rarely seen character)."
"There's so many of them!"
"What are they doing?"
"Ah, it must be SOOOOO hot in there!" (It was somewhere between 95-100 out!)

1279524585.jpg

Then it ended. The ropes were still up. The CMs all disappeared, but the characters, CMs that helped them, and lots of managers were still out. Then, our rope dropped. Ready - set - walk with purpose!!!

People headed towards characters - who were throughout the Hub area.

I went over towards Belle and Beast (my favorite Disney couple).

1279523952.jpg

There were little groups of people everywhere - surrounding different characters. Pictures. Autographs. Everywhere.

1279524067.jpg

Then, after maybe - hhmmm - 15-20 minutes, the started pulling the characters in. (It was SOOOO hot!)

After they were all cleared I asked a manager if she knew how many were there. She said, "55." Ah-ha! I mentioned to her that it seemed like a huge number of characters to get out there. She said, "We dug deep. There were some very really seen ones out here today."

It was really cool. Fun. Exhilarating. And cute.

Incidentally, I have looked through my own photos, watched a few videos and managed to spot 48 of the 55. It really was some creative Disney fun. One might say it felt like a Disney Dream (sorry.... it was too perfect). :goodvibes

Oh, and it was mentioned that the President, George Kalogridis, was there. After the characters, I was heading to the Emporium. I saw him with a large group of guests. He was signing, saying a few words to people, and taking photos.

On my way out (around 5:30pm) I stopped at the turnstiles to get some Dumbo / anniversary maps. They had maps in the holders with Fantasmic! covers. The CM told me they ran out of Dumbo maps.

I didn't just well up, I had tears streaming down for minutes of it! Not in person, via youtube! (Why couldn't WOC do that? I guess the characters have special powers.)

I watched it again and still cried. LOL, such a sap! Then I went through and watched more of the youtube videos from the 55th and kept right on crying.

Have you all seen this one? It is a ten minute summary of the events of the day and is quite well done. Vintage footage and footage from the celebration.

I posted this also at Micechat...

This was not the normal show, it was by the cast members themselves. I was in a crowd of Cast Members that were not in the show but were very excited to see their friends do this. When the Parade gates opened it was kaos, not well organized, most could not dance on beat to the music, but it was THEIR demonstration not Disney's Celebration. It was as much for the cast as the guests, and the cast seemed to have a great time, including the characters. We saw about 52 characters, many not usually seen. It was a great time, but not a real show. And was a demonstration by many Cast members that do not get to preform, but herd the masses into lines, and help Guests that often are rude to them. As a Disneyland Event it was a dud. As a demonstration by the unappreciated Cast, it was a good time.

When have you last seen these mice?

Note: This is now my favorite "Princess" photo. This is not the normal Princess Aurora pose. The Aurora friend was in the shade between the mobbed Belle with Beast and Arial. She was just standing there with nobody else around. I had a brief conversion with the Auroa friend who was enjoying the event and was glad to be there. She is smiling at seeing two small girls with autograph books jumping up and down with joy in front of the Arial Character....

she was having fun, not in Character...not posing for the guests at that moment.

That woman who's front & center in the photo is a friend of mine (who'll be mortified when I show her that shot! ). After hearing her talk about the dance, and how hilariously badly it went, I think she'll be quite happy to know how much everyone enjoyed it. Trust me, those CMs did some brief, but intensive (and sweaty) rehearsal for that dance. She told me they were even having impromptu rehearsals amongst themselves while waiting backstage for the "moment". From some of the videos out there, you can see that the CMs who came out from the Firehouse gate didn't make it out as quickly as those from the other side (not their fault) and were a bit lost because they had to pick up the dance in the middle, which, for non-dancers with a tenuous grasp on the routine to begin with, created some very funny confusion. She said that after the dance, a number of them returned backstage and all agreed that they would have liked a second shot at it! :dance3:

Looks like it was an awful lot of fun, even if they didn't all get it exactly right. That's what made it unique. It was regular cast members, not dancers. What a fun celebration!! :thumbsup2

Dreams, great pictures! I'm going to shoot you a PM right now.

Disneyland 1951, what a beautiful pic of Aurora.

Ohh! I have pictures! We were standing right in front of the Opera House.

I think our theme of characters facing us was bears.

The Geenie was out!

DSC01956.jpg

DL President George Kalogridis was out in front of the churro cart in Town Square taking pictures and signing autographs. He was a very nice guy and I thought it was really neat he was out in the hot sun with that suit on showing interest to all the guests. You can tell he really enjoys and takes pride in his job.

Wow, looks like everyone was having an awesome time! I wish I could have been there.

Guess I can wait another 5 years to join a celebration like that. :D

Hmmm.... It was an amazing Disneyland event. It was an opportunity for the Cast Members to do something fun and different for the guests. It was a celebration to honor their place of employment. It was a chance for them to do something fun and share it with the guests in the Park that day.

I spoke with some CMs after everyone went away. They were there participating on their own time. They attended rehearsal on their own time to learn the dance. Seeing the various costumes showed how mixed the CMs who participated were. I thought it was an amazing Disneyland event. It was energetic. It was unique. It was very special to see. I loved it. It was a very special Disneyland event.

What a cool thread. Thanks for posting the video and pictures - AWESOME! :cheer2: Wish I could have been there!

Thank you so much, DisneyDreams, for posting so much about the event!! Much appreciated! 48 - 55 characters that you can name? WOW! You're awesome... can you give us a detailed list of who you know was there? No worries if you can't!!

I think there was supposed to be 55 for the 55th, but I've only seen 53 from what I saw in person and in videos. Perhaps I need to expand my definition of character.

Aww, you're welcome. Glad someone enjoyed "hearing" it. Like I said, I talked to a manager and 2 CMs who were still around after everything cleared. I thought the entire thing was fun so it was cool to hear what they shared.

Okay, so, I mentioned to a manager (guessing she was one as she was in a suit) that it was so fun to see so many characters all over such a small place all at the same time. I then asked, “Do you know how many were out here?” She smiled and said, “55.”

I could not believe it. There were a lot, but 55?!!? So, I searched on-line for videos of the Flash Mob and watched them in ridiculous detail. LOL With Word open on one side of my screen and the video on the other, I tried to spot 55 characters. Here's what I came up with (so far hahaha!):

1. Aladdin
2. Alice
3. Ariel
4. Aurora
5. Baloo
6. Beast
7. Belle
8. Brer Bear
9. Brer Fox
10. Buzz Lightyear
11. Captain Hook
12. Chip
13. Cinderella
14. Cruella
15. Daisy
16. Dale
17. Donald
18. Dopey
19. Fairy godmother
20. Felonious Fox
21. Genie
22. Gepetto
23. Goofy
24. Jasmine
25. Jesse
26. Kenai
27. Koda
28. Mad Hatter
29. Maleficent
30. Mary Poppins
31. Max
32. Mickey
33. Minnie
34. Mulan
35. Mushu
36. Penguin
37. Perla
38. Peter Pan
39. Pinocchio
40. Pluto
41. Queen of Hearts
42. Rafiki
43. Snow White
44. Suzy
45. Tiana
46. Tinkerbelle
47. Twiddle Dee
48. Twiddle Dum
49. White Rabbit
50. Woody

There's 5 more hiding from me. If anyone knows of them, I would love to know!

Enjoy!

I see myself...kinda. (On the far left, there's a blonde boy with a gray shirt and blue shorts. I'm just to the right of him, wearing my white DIS Unplugged tshirt and black shorts, and with my hand shading my eyes.)...
Oh how funny! "Smile, you're on not-so-candid camera!" As for the shot you took, that is where I was. I have tried to match people in that picture with other pictures I have that I took. If you look at the very right of your photo, there is a PhotoPass photographer (tan vest). Do you have a picture that shows anything a little to the right of her? Her ponytail is in a few of my shots - so I must be a few people deep behind her.

ETA:
I think there was supposed to be 55 for the 55th, but I've only seen 53 from what I saw in person and in videos. Perhaps I need to expand my definition of character.
I'd LOVE to see what 53 you have spotted!

ETA2: I just noticed in prettyprincessbelle's photo above there are TWO penguins from Mary Poppins! So that makes 51 for my list.

^ hehe, yep, I just spied two penguins in prettyprincessbelle's photo above and just finished adding to my post. Thanks!

I have the two mice on my list already. Their names are Perla and Suzy.

I have a photo with Tink in it. My DH asked me if Bert was with Mary Poppins, but I have searched and searched for any photo / video with him and have yet to see him. Also, I have not seen a single character from Winnie the Pooh in anyone's photos / video. A seemingly odd omission, but I haven't seen any shots of them at all. :confused3

ETA: YAY! I just figured out a character I had missing. Gideon! WOW, talk about a rarely seen character! But there he is - dancing in the Hub! That's 52.
