I think there should be some penalty point warning on peoples user IDs when they are nasty to people. I know they get a moderators warning but on another forum I visit if anyone has been warned an indicator i put beside their user name. Its a great deterrent for nasty posts and attacks. :furious: :teacher:

what may seem nasty to one person may sound like funny sarcasm to another... i think it would be unfair to single people out like that..

On the other forum I go to, we use karma points. They're little green dots that you get under your post count. Users can give good karma points when they like a certain post. Or they can give bad karma (red dots) when they don't like a certain post.

that's what i was thinking also.
i find it best to ignore the threads once it gets nasty.

I have never seen a system as you describe. What is the other Forum?

I think the seriously nasty ones should just be given the boot - period. There's no need for them. I've seen people banned for pretty innocent things, while some of the super meanies stick around forever. :confused3

I really don't think the idea of a digital scarlet letter is a good idea.

ITA with this.

Especially since disagreement does not equal nastiness and flaming.

If you really do believe that the post is nasty......on the bottom of each persons area.....is a triangle with a line it in.....click on that and report the post.......
then the moderator of that board can decide if you are imagining things or if it is a really nasty post......

I agree that being able to rate people is good in theory. However, I have seen on other boards that do that, there are always a couple people (teenagers, I suspect) who think it is funny to go around giving people bad marks for absolutely no reason. Then people have low ratings and they didn't even do anything wrong!

My first thought when I saw the OP. If the thread gets mean, just stop reading. And if you find some poster always is mean, report them and/or put them on ignore.

Exactly!

There are certain posters that only "come out" to give verbal thrashings. It makes you wonder if they are really that "brave" and outspoken in real life. ;) On the other hand, you never "see" their presence in threads giving/showing others good wishes, sympathy or compassion. :rolleyes1

Another good reason--one I had thought of but forgot to add to my post, and you worded it better than I would have.

when you've been here for a short time you start to figure out who the trouble makers are and who like to stir the pot. You also figure out what the hot topics are. Mostly we're adults and I think we can just ignore those posters/subjects unless we want to be a part of it. In extreme cases I think a warning system would be great from the moderators. I tend to stay away from the hot topics a great deal of the time but somedays you just feel ornery. I stay away from the posters who irk me. One in particular gets under my skin, so I just ignore that poster. I think the problem with the moderators watching everything is sometimes things posted to a message board can be meant in one way and come across a different way.

Maybe the debate board should come back with a enter at your own risk warning....and let everyone go at it :rotfl2:

I dont mean we should rate the post - only the Mods when a warning has been issued to the poster. The Mods can decide as a group if a warning is warranted and put an indicator on. I do use the report bad post option when needed. I have seen trolls on the board and reported them in the middle of the USA night, and there arent many on the boards, when it is morning in the UK..

A "point" system here wouldn't work for all of the reasons already posted on this thread. There is no way for it to be done objectively.

That said, I get annoyed when I see an obvious troll get away posting a lot.

It's pretty obvious when you see a username that signed up the day before to join a heated CB discussion, it's someone who's been around a long time playing a troll.

I have no use for such people. I think if someone has been banned numerous times, they should find another discussion forum. And if they don't have the nerve to say something with their usual username(s), then they shouldn't be allowed to use a troll name to do it.

Well put!

The judgment is so subjective. What is nasty to one, is overly sensitive to the other.

It's not hard to avoid general nastiness here. Stay away from politics, religion, and parenting. And frankly, if the tone of the boards is stressing you out, turn off the  computer find something else to do! None of this is real.

That is horrible misappropriation of karma. All karma is bad. One should be free of karma, altogether. Maybe, out of respect, you could rename it?

Yeah, I was just calling it by it's name so that people who used the same system would know what I was talking about. It's not like I named it...
