Five Reasons

Everyone's needs vary, to say nothing of budget, but if you are trying to make up your mind about a DSLR, this article offers some insight into the advantages of a DSLR.

i was expecting david letterman.....:)

Thanks for the link Ed!! Some day I will upgrade and this info will help out a lot. But for now I will have to stick with my new S700. :thumbsup2

Plus in a general setting, not one where everyone is taking a picture like a zoo, people get out of your way if you have a big rig.

I have an additional one. Because if you really want a DSLR and go for the models that are close but not quite a DSLR (S3&5, Sony H5&7, etc...) you are going to kick yourself that you can't quite do what you want that a DSLR can do!

But...

An SLR isn't for everyone. There are trade-offs. So, for example, many people will find thery don't get the results they want with the kit lens, so they'll need to spend lots more money on an additional lens.

And then you inevitably seem to find that when the wonderful photo opportunity arises, you have the wrong lens on (actually, there's a touch of Nikon envy in that comment :) )

SLRs are great, IF you are willing to give them time, effort and money they require

and along those lines if you hunger for power, when you have a dlsr everyone takes a shot of what you just took one of,,,,hehe, depending on just how evil you are that can make for some fun knowing 10 people just took a shot of a blade of grass cause you did:rotfl: :rolleyes1 ;) .

Yep, and if you stop to set up a tripod 20 more people take a picture of whatever you are aiming your SLR at! Then you look through it, say "naahh" and walk away. ;)

Well, I definitely don't agree with this guy's "top picks", but most of the points are accurate. To be fair, PnSs do have their advantages, besides the obvious one of size - it's easy to get nearly everything in focus (due to the large DoF), and of course the ability to shoot video is handy.

A few nitpicks for his article... there are a couple point-n-shoots with "real" mechanical zoom rings, Fuji currently sells a couple and Sony had one not that long ago.

"But most digicam lenses are built with 4x6-inch snapshot in mind"... actually, PnSs are usually designed with a 4x3" snapshot in mind, very few (if any) shoot the traditional 3:2 ratio. How's that for nitpicking? :teeth:

Shooting video is the biggest reason I didn't go DSLR. I knew there would be times I would want to take short videos with sound and not carry an additional camera. That and my budget was under $500.

OT: What is a mechanical zoom ring? I have a Sony H5, I know I can get lenses for it, but I haven't tried that yet.

(I've been a bit busy, sorry for taking so long to reply. :) )

A mechanical zoom ring is how the vast majority of SLR zoom lenses work - you rotate the outside of the lens and it mechanically zooms in and out.

As opposed to pressing buttons or turning a lever which uses a motor to zoom in and out, which is slower and a bit clunky and imprecise IMHO.
