I was actually considering reviewing our Five Guys experience for the review contest. When I heard it on the discussion show from last week, I laughed my tush off. I don't think I'm going to use it for my review now, but just had to comment.

Five Guys started popping up here in Jersey about four months ago (specifically in the beach area..aka "The Shore" to you out of staters). We tried it the other day and I honestly thought the concept was good, but was not impressed. Of course, I am not a huge burger afficianado either. My boyfriend is a huge meat eater and thought they were fabulous though. I found this a bit ironic being that Bobby Flay opened another of his burger palaces by our mall and Sean has yet to take me there. Go figure.

I've been wondering if Five Guys was a chain or not being that there are now two near us. I'm assuming yes now that I heard Kevin's comments on the show. In terms of the one in Florida, I think it is a good option if you want to go off property to eat. However, I rather stay in the parks or at a resort for my meals. Oh, and Kevin? I wholeheartedly agree about Yachtsman Steakhouse. If I was deserted on a stranded island with nothing but one meal left for me, it'd be something from there. Something, I might add, that includes their pull apart dinner rolls and lobster bisque. -drool-

As far as Pecos Bill's goes, I honestly think the huge draw is the result of the fixins bar. Where else can you make a meal just from the fixins? Think about it. The possibilities are endless! Tomatoes, lettuce, onions. Tomatoes, lettuce, onions, mushrooms. Cheese, lettuce, onions, mushrooms, pickles. Oh my goodness, their pickles are amazing (I'm a pickle afficianado, not burger remember)! You can put their fixins on an old shoe and it'd taste good. Not to mention the fact that you can dress up your french fries into a huge meal.

Thanks for the laughs and info! :)

Yes, five guys is a chain (franchise). It started here in the DC area. There was one just around the corner from my condo when I lived in VA. 15 yrs later, we're in MD now and they've just opened up one near us. I think the burgers and fries are very good, but the fries don't travel well- they're best eaten right away.

they are good! like the way you can add just the toppings you like. but, they are very messy by the time you get them home.

Back when we were new to Disney, my brother in law that never took much of an interest in planning remarked about Pecos Bill. His only hint in all the times we have gone is Pecos Bills great condiment bar. :)

We tease him about this every time. He has been a pretty good sport about it.

They just opened a Five Guys here in Fort Collins, Colorado a few weeks ago.....nothing but good reviews from EVERYONE I know who has eaten there. Why I am not one of those people yet, I don't know. Don't know if anyone outside of Colorado has a Smashburger in their town, but that is another good burger/dog joint, with Haagen-Daaz milk shakes. yuuuuummmmmy!

Silly Five Guys burger question. DH & I like a good burger every now and then and am always open to try places off property so this might be a good place to try soon. I just looked at their website and this might be a silly/stupid question but when it says that they serve Coca-Cola and water for drinks does that mean Coca-Cola products or just Coke?

I ask because DH is not a fan of drinking water with a meal so he has to have a diet soda (preferrably Dt. Coke) when he eats. Does anyone know if the reference to Coca-Cola means Coke products or just regular 'ole Coke?

TIA

My body of a twig, appetite of a truck driver boyfriend LOVES Five Guys. I feel like there is a new bag of leftover fries in our fridge once a week. Their burgers are a double by standard. I went once and wasn't impressed, it reminded me a lot of a burger from Wendys.

Now as far as best burger on property, so not Pecos Bills...it's so Beaches and Cream!

Haven't heard the discussion show yet (can't get it to download :badpc: ) but we were at the shopping center that has our local Five Guys this past weekend and considered Five Guys but skipped it for California Tortilla. Mmmmm - Cal Tort. Now that is good eats.

Yes they have Diet coke. It means Coke products.

I was hoping but since their menu was so simple I was thinking that they might keep their drink choice simple too - water or Coke. :) Thanks!

I LOVE Five Guys! We first tried it when we visited Washington, DC, and now they have several in the metro-Atlanta area. Yum for sure!

We've got a couple of them near us up here in CT.

The burgers are VERY good, IMHO....but they excel in the sheer variety and number of toppings they offer "standard". Yes, better than even the variety on Pecos Bills' "fixins" bar....though the benefit of Pecos Bills is you're adding your own, so can carefully control quantity. :)

The fries are excellent, IMHO. We've found they travel "best" (granted, we're about 10 minutes away...not long enough for the food to get cold) if you leave the paper sack OPEN during your commute to wherever you're going to eat. That way they stay crisp, and don't "steam" themselves into being soggy. They're also uncommonly good with vinegar.....something MOST french fries (especially of the fast food variety) don't hold up well with for me. I think it's the fact they use FRESH potatoes to make their fries.

Portion size on both the burgers and the fries is amazingly huge...especially the fries. We order 2 large fries to feed the 5 of us...and there's ALWAYS leftovers. The fact they dump some "extra" in the bag (and by extra I mean the equivalent of a small order "extra", IMHO, when you order the 2 larges) ensures we never finish them off.

The spicey Cajun fries are likewise good, but the kids can't eat 'em. Too spicy for them, though I'd only rate them "medium", at best, on the spicy scale.

Needless to say: We're big fans.

One word of warning: They fry in peanut oil, and there are "raw" peanuts, in the shell, hanging around the dining area for people to munch on and help themselves to. If you, or someone you know/love/are eating with has a peanut allergy, my suggestion would be to STAY FAR AWAY!! As good as the food is...it's not "worth a trip to the hospital or endangering someone's health" good.

Over twenty years ago a dad told his sons, you can have money for college or to start a burger business. I think they made the right decision. Love the burgers and fries. So far - 300 locations in over 25 states. I hope the reach Maine soon

I had the worst cheeseburger of my entire life at Pecos Bill's. OMG..it was so bad that not even the great fixens bar could save it.
Ugh. Dry little hockey puck patty on a slimy cold bun. Nasty.

We just tried Five Guys tonight in Oak Park, Illinois after listening to the Podcast. Oh my is it ever good! I gotta go back now to try their hot dogs. Jason got a burger with A1 on it (his fave) and they actually cook the A1 into the meat.
Thanks for helping us to discover a new burger joint! We loved Schoops but they all closed near us? I really don't know if any exist anymore.
We love In N Out but I doubt they will ever come this far east.

Washingtonians be proud of our local eateries! Five Guys... Goooood. California Tortilla... Goooooood.

Just to add my 2 cents to the review of Five Guys and Fuddruckers... We went to our local Fuddruckers a couple of days before Kevin's review and we had a horrid experience! We used to love it, but the place has gone downhill the last couple of years... So if you are in the DC area stay away from the Fuddruckers that is in Tyson's!

There are a couple Five Guys by us although I never gave the place a thought before. Pecos Bill...DH loves the fixins bar. It doesn't take much to make him happy. :goodvibes

LOL - We got a five guys here in North Jersey a few months ago and now I can't keep DS out of it. I don't eat meat so I am stuck with the grilled cheese (not very good).

The plaza where they are located used to belong to a store (a long, long time ago) called Two Guys (it was like Bradlees, Caldor, Target...)

OMG...there is someone else old enough around here to remember Two Guys? I used to love that store. ;)
