I went to Dick's in May and bout an elliptical for $800. You need to ride several of them to find the one that has the most comfortable stride for you. The Horizon Fitness CSE4.6 seemed to fit the bill. I didn't buy the warranty plan for it.
In 6-weeks, the dang machine had broken 3 times. The first time, it was my DS's fault. He stepped off of it on the wrong side and caught the power cord with his foot. Instead of just pulling out of the wall, it had a transformer in it and broke with the plug part still in the wall but the rest on the floor. I tried to get a new cord from Dick's, but they told me without paying $160 for the maintenance plan, they couldn't sell me a $10 power cord. I emailed Horizon Fitness and they never got back to me about purchasing this replacement part.
In the meantime, we rigged the power to work.
That elliptical had an eTrak system that would log your workouts by lifetime, month, week and last workout. This option worked sometimes and not other times. Basically, it worked when it felt like working.
The last straw was when the machine started ticking when we rode it. We had 90 days to return it and that's what I did.
We went to a fitness store and bought a $3,500 Precor elliptical. It's made for home use, but it is just like the one that is at the gym to which we belonged. This is the best decision that we made. Yes, it cost a lot, but neither DH nor I kept the gym membership at a savings of $65 per month. Our kids can also use it. They couldn't go to the gym all the time because they are under 16 and it would have cost us a membership fee for them to go, too.
I like the elliptical better than a treadmill because I can read on the elliptical and I can't on a treadmill. I have to read to keep my mind occupied, otherwise I feel tortured by the machine. A good book will suck me in and I forget how long I've been riding.
As my DH says, I should have listened to him in the first place and bought a Precor from the beginning.
