Hi guys! Has anyone out there tried the fishing trips on HHI with Gullah gal, or any other company? Would love to hear your experiences as hoping to have a family day out!

Also, has anyone done the island boat trips that go to 'vanishing island' to collect shells? Would love to hear what you thought!

There are 4 fishing charters available right across from the DVC resort at Shelter Cove. Gullah Gal, Bayrunner, Catmandoo and Palmetto Lagoon Charters are at the marina in addition to Low Country Tours right from the resort.

I have gone with Low Country on several occasions and just used Bayrunner 2 weeks ago - where we caught enough Spanish Mackerel for dinner. Gullah Gal is the largest of this group and even has bathroom facilities onboard and trips will accommodate up to 6. Bayrunner and Catmandoo will take up to 4 per trip and I think Low Country also has a limit of 4. They all provide fishing gear and bait (they will catch the bait fish just before you start fishing). Here is a link to the Shelter Cove fishing fleet.

We have caught redfish, Spanish Mackerel, jack, bluefish, cobia as well as a large variety of sharks (black tip, hammerhead, bonnet head, brown) and a number of rays. All of these stay within sight of shore, mostly in the Calibogue Sound where the Broad Creek marsh joins it near the May River before meeting the Atlantic.

In addition, there is a larger boat (70')at the same marina, Captain Hook, that offers fishing trips for large groups - but in a much less intimate setting than the other charters mentioned above.

The resort used to offer an off-shore excursion, but I'm not sure that is still available thru Disney.

There are also a couple of companies (also at Shelter Cove) that offer nature tours - the Skimmer and Outside Hilton Head provide nature tours tailored to your desires including beach combing and shelling trips. Here is a link - Shelter Cove Boat Tours

Enjoy!

We went with one of the companies not through Disney - but I forget which one. We didn't fish, but went dolphin watching and then to the vanishing island. LOVED it!

OK, we've been to HHI four summers in a row, but have never heard of "vanishing island" Where is that? Thanks!

Thank you so much for all the information! :goodvibes We definitely want to do a fishing trip for the boys and then a dolphin/shell one for everyone! Do you know what trips Disney offers that might cover this? What was Vanishing Island like for anyone who has been?

Any photos?!

"Vanishing Island" is a sand bar that only appears at low tide. I think it may be the one off the southern tip of HH, near HH/Tybee/Daufuskie/Savannah River. The sand bar there is about 6 miles long.

Outside Hilton Head (one of the Shelter Cove tour options right across from the Disney resort) offers a beachcombing tour at low tide that will include something like this. I don't know if they call it "vanishing island" though. - http://www.palmettodunes.com/hilton-head-boat-tours.php
