Fishing -- can anyone help?

If the kids are squeemish about killing real worms, you can buy fake worms in most sporting goods stores (wal-mart likely has them too). As a kid my family would go fishing every year for a week, and we actually prefer the fake ones to the real ones.

Ditto the closed reel sugestion. A closed reel is just that, totally in inclosed, you press a button on the top of the reel while casting. All kiddie poles that I've ever seen have this type of reel, so you can look at those to get an idea of what to look for.

You are very kind to think I would have been able to tell the difference between a "closed faced" reel and an "open faced reel". If I actually found a store with more than one rod for sale, what should I look for, besides the absence of an "AS SEEN ON TV" sticker?

I should note, in case you are still not clear on our skill level.

A pole for an OFR will have large rings, especially the one closest to the reel.

The "rods" we have are closed reel. When the line got tangled I had to remove the reel from the rod and screw off a covering, then rethread it. It was a mess, and I ended up having to cut off half of the line.

We're going again tonight. Maybe we'll catch something again!

Closed reels are better for beginners. Have fun.

This is the rod that we have that "works" (definition of works: when we shoot it, the hook ends up in the water, and not on the user's shoe. This is one that caught the fish).
