I was interested in buying this for our little one, but am confused why you need pc/mac access. The site says this:

A PC or Macintosh computer with internet connection, CD-ROM drive and USB port.

I know it takes batteries.

Anyone out there have this toy? Would you recommend it?

You need …

* A PC or Macintosh computer with internet connection, CD-ROM drive and USB port.

You get …

* Media Manager—CD-ROM makes it easy to load and manage photos, music and other content (iXL can store multiple software titles, photos and music files)
* Touch-sensitive, color LCD screen
* Attached stylus
* Headphone jack
* SD card slot for memory expansion
* USB connector & cable

Minimum System Requirements:

Microsoft® Windows XP,
* Windows Vista ™ or Windows 7 150MB free hard drive space
* Internet connection

* Macintosh OS X v10.4 or higher 150MB free hard drive space
* Internet connection

Would love to hear reviews as well. My parents went ahead and bought one for my 3yo nephew for Christmas (he will be 3 1/2 by then) based on reviews we found on Amazon and ToysRUs. Those reviews were pretty positive.

I think the pc access is so you can download photos and music to the system. They don't have a lot of titles to choose from now, but I wonder if they are going to make some online - ie: iPod????

Thinking of getting this for our son who will be 4 y.o. by Christmas. He has a hand me down VSmile system, but is too impatient to let us show him how to use it. We always get "I DO IT!" when trying to teach him how to use anything.

We adopted him from Ukraine in March, so he is not as tech savvy as most of the other kids.

This has been on my must get list for my son since I saw it QVC do the demo for Christmas in July it sold out before I got through online and I have been sitting on the waitlist for 45 days and it has now dropped off...

To answer your question it is supposed to be able to communicate with software you install on your computer for all kinds of cool things and including updating. Awesome toy! I wanted to get this instead of a DSiXL since my son is only 3 and it is made for that age group.

Yep we just ordered one on ebay but haven't gotten it yet. You need a computer because the games are a cd-rom that are downloaded onto the ixl. This is why we chose this- no cartridges and it has a drive for a memory card.

I am looking forward to getting it and playing with it!

what bothers me about it is the games are 30$... if you were to get little one a ipod touch say second generation you can get so many great educational mini games for 1-3$ per ans books that read to him for the same among just plain old fun games and the finger painting... i got my daughter (now 3) her 2nd generation itouch for 200$ last year brand new and she can do so much more with it than that thing and the games are so much more reasonable and she can also watch movies on it... i even made recordings of her dad and i reading her books and she loves to listen to them specially when daddy is TDY or deployed.
