Fish Extenders/Meets & Privacy

Hi! It sounds like I need to join a group on a certain giant social media site. Our cruise is a surprise and we haven't told our children or friends yet. I'm always leery about the privacy over there - you can see who's in the group without joining, so i imagine it's searchable. Will it list on my page or my profile or whatnot that I'm a member of that certain group?? Aren't there any fish extender groups or anything planned HERE??

You'll have to check the Cruise Meets board to see if anyone has started a cruise meet thread for your cruise. That's where Fish Extenders (and other stuff) are discussed/arranged.

Often there may be someone on a given cruise meet thread that tries directing people to other social media sites, but they really aren't supposed to do that here.

I don't "do" that other site AT. ALL.

You will be just fine joining that "group" We have done Many fish extender groups there with NO issues.

I hate that giant social media site and I don't have an account. I miss the FE here on the Dis, which are open to everyone, but unfortunately, the cruise meets ups on here aren't very active anymore. I have had to use my husband's account to access the other site and join meet ups on there our last couple cruises, since I refuse to join.

It is all in how you set up your setting for your account.

Is there any way that the FE can be moved back to the disboards ? We haven’t had FB accounts for years and refuse to open an account, especially in light of current security issues.

No need to "move" anything anywhere.

Fish Extenders can be organized on any social media site. There's absolutely no reason that there can't be groups/fish extenders on 6 different sites for the same cruise. They are all separate entities.

In order for a DISboards cruise meet thread to do a fish extender exchange, it requires someone on that particular cruise meet to step up and say "I'll maintain the list". And then follow through on it. Maintaining and posting only on that cruise meet thread, not saying "I'll take your information and pass it onto XX site".

There definitely ARE fish extender groups planned here on DISboards. It would be done through the Cruise Meets board. If one hasn't been started for your cruise yet, feel free to initiate it. How many people will join really just depends on the people taking that particular cruise. Some are busy, others don't get much interest.

Haha! Me too. I thought I was the only one who had to "ghost write" posts on that website for our disney cruise

The groups are always closed if not secret. So they won't get any sort of timeline notifications.

I would say they are almost always closed and/or private. It is possible to have a group that isn't. You can easily tell when you try to go to the page.

A closed group may still mean that someone could see you were a member if they found the group. However there shouldn’t be a notification to anyone that you joined the group.

The meet and greet groups here seem to stay small now until a few weeks before the sail date. Sometimes they get rolling about 2 months before sail date although you don’t get to share as much then(hotels, first day back to school, transportation, unusual weather, adventure choices, celebrations...) I miss the group here from 2010, I lost tons of FB friends in 2013 when I set my account so no posts would be seen by anyone because I didn’t want to flaunt my cruise in front of them. This still bums me out because they must feel I had selfish motives, when that was never the reason. I know there are some huge groups here still, like those people from Panama Canal, and repo’s. But they have traveled so long together they start groups early and get huge. I’d love to travel with that group.

But just like the 2010 group here, I made good friends there with the 2013 group that was moved over to FB so I followed to be in FE. 2016 the board seldomly discuses FE and I was so surprised to see thread now.

Like you I really want to see the FE’s back here. But so many of those whom are “earning my ears” just don’t know if anyone can/will start one here. So they search elsewhere. I’m sure if they knew they could start one themselves they might. But info is buried 2/3 of the way down in a super long pined post that is sorely in need of updates. Hard to get excited about reading that page when you can see page 1 under that locked posts is super current. I think last I looked you could still contact a lady(Shirley??) about having a personal gift basket made up for you and delivered to the ship. That ended years ago.

If you go that route, be sure to turn off your notifications banner. You don't want your phone to be sitting in front of someone you don't want to know about it - and then have a banner pop up about it.

Note - I just looked at my husband's page, and went to About - and I can see the cruise group listed there. Now - I don't usually look there - but it doesn't appear to be as private as I thought.

See, that’s what concerns me. Having anyone be able to look at your About page and see specifically what future vacations you are planning. Not even just from a surprising my family perspective, but in general I don’t want that information out there. Why does FB have to make everything so complicated??!
