Fish Extenders-Be Honest

We love it! Well, DD and I do, DH not so much. We've done it twice and next month we're doing it again! She's 12, almost 13 now and I thought she didn't care anymore but as we were getting ready for our upcoming cruise she got right back into it. She said her favorite part was delivering them all??? Ok. I like the time we spend together making them at home. There's not a lot a 12/13 year old gets excited about any more so as long as she still gets into it, I'm doing it. A Disney cruise to me is about making memories anyway. And lets face it, it's fun coming back to our cabin to see if there is anything in the FE.

Sure, you get a lot of candy and CD's but I've also gotten interesting things people have made or things, even candy from where they live...that's fun. PS, DD gets all our candy and she brings some of it to her friends at school who think FE candy is the coolest thing ever!

This time I'm doing a cabin gift. Our budget is tight this year and feel like I can do a better gift that the whole cabin can use as opposed to small trinkets for each person.

Enjoy your cruise :)

This is a great idea. I can't wait our first cruise this April! Giving is the best part. I know the kids will be super excited to decorate door, deliver gifts!!!

I agree with this 100%! We did an FE group once and quickly realized we are in the latter category. I don't want all that "stuff" coming home with me. I am constantly decluttering my home as it is. I thought I would love FEs because I love giving gifts but it wasn't as enjoyable as I hoped, it was irritating to my husband to use extra packing space, and it meant nothing at all to my kids (who like candy but are too busy stuffing themselves on cruise food and self-serve ice cream to even notice candy sitting around the room). So I never signed up again. Other people LOVE the FE "stuff" and that's great for them, but my family is much happier not being apart of it.

We did it once, but ended up with a luggage full of odds and ends that mostly got tossed when we brought them home. We haven't done it since.

when i posted these arguments as to why I won't participate in an adult FE...ever....BUT will encourage my grandkinder to do a kids FE...I was accused of not being a spirited person. I asked what on earth people DO with all those key chains and bottle openers but only received snide answers. Anyhow, I don't personally care what adults do or don't do with the FE's. just curious, is all..............

Just a thought - why not be a part of the "pixie-dusting" group? That's where you get a copy of the FE list so you can drop off little gifts, but you're not officially ON the list and therefore don't receive any. That's what I've done on some cruises.

I love the FE exchanges. I could really care less about the gifts we get. It's just fun to come back to the room and see something. I don't make individualized gifts. We make one per stateroom. My expectations are not high so if I get candy, so be it. My kids are 10 and 14 and will sometimes get little kid gifts but their eyes still light up because they got something. Let's not forget that it's suppose to be fun. People complain about the room it takes up and the amount of time they put into it but don't appreciate when someone just brings candy. Maybe they didn't have room in their luggage but still wanted to participate.
I like your comment and I agree totally with you. It's the thought of the kids enjoying!! :sail:

Love this idea, but it seems you have to belong to the FE to get a copy

when you walk around the ship you'll see the fish extender pockets hanging outside cabin doors. just drop in your gifts!

edited: yes, some pixie groups are organized, but pixie dusting itself does not need to be.

Yes, you'll see the FEs hanging by the doors! Sometimes I'll pixie dust people who have "celebration" magnets on their door-- birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

I've never had a problem getting the list. I just talk to the organizer and tell them what I want it for. But, I agree, you can just walk around and see the various FE hangers, and gift them randomly.

My kids faces light up when ever they see something in our FE organizer. My kids have for both cruises brought in the FE Gifts for show and tell and the teachers have written back wanting to reserve a cruise. Memories to last a lifetime with all we have ever received and we've never complained about a single item we've received. Giving is the best part though. You always wonder if the gifts given will be used for years to come.

It's definitely a your mileage may vary thing. I've had groups where I ended up with dollar store baubles that I got rid of to preserve space in my suitcase but I've also had groups that do nice handmade items. I always have to keep in mind that just because I put a certain amount of effort it, someone else may put more or less and it's for fun so not to worry about it. No one is obligated to participate in a FE. If it's something you think your kids will enjoy, something extra special to add to a fun cruise then you should do it. If you think it will be a burden or something else to worry about then don't.

For me, it's part of the budgeting, and a mandatory activity for cruising with Disney. Some people really go all out, and I followed up with them on FB and they really enjoy doing the gifts so I felt a little less guilty, lol. One lady did amazing hand stitched individual gifts for every single day that we had. It was just so amazing. I am not crafty AT ALL so I do budget for a little more expensive gifts from disneystore.com, like next cruise every child is getting a 15" Mickey plush. My kids could be more excited and willing to deliver with me, but it is something I have found enjoyable.

Just an FYI, when my group of friends have sailed we have organized private FEs amongst just our group. We didn't participate in any cruise groups. So if you walked past our doors and dropped gifts in - thank you! :)

Hmmm now I'm second guessing if I want to do the FE. Most of the children involved are under 10, mine are all over 10. Hmmmmmmm
I have the opposite problem. In mine most of the kids listed are older. My son will be 6. Also, it's just the two of us, but 6 of the families are 5 people, and the rest 4. My expense will be huge compared to what we will receive lol. But I do think my son will enjoy it.

Im a single mother who travels with my DS. We've cruised DCL 4 times. we participated in FEs twice on the Dream and it was alot of work. fun for my child tho. on the past two trips ive simply packed small gifts for my kid and hung out FE bag out. when he's sleeping or at kids club i put gifts in the bag and the secret is mine.. FEs are very fun for kids and yes a lot of times parents too, but after a couple times i prefer to save myself the time and the luggage space
What a GREAT idea!!!! I'm also a single mom who will be traveling with my 6 year old son. 20 rooms in our FE, all 4-5 people each. I asked how people fit all of the gifts in their luggage- they said to bring a separate suitcase. We are doing Disney World after our cruise, which will need different clothing items, so I've already considered shipping our clothes to CR

We've done many FEs over the years. I think they are fun. Larger groups are harder though. Our last cruise it was limited to 10 cabins per group. I thought that was brilliant! So easy to do with only a few staterooms and the fun/magic for my DS was priceless. We also don't have any expectations with the gifts we've received amazing over the top gifts and candy/stickers. It all even's out, and it's about the fun. I would point out again anyone doing an FE should try to get the groups small... once we had a group of 60. That was nuts and not so fun. Limit them to 10!! ;)
There are 75 people in our group. My son and I included. I WISH there was smaller ones!!! Like I said in my previous post..I'm going to need to dedicate an entire suitcase to it. It is an added baggage fee, but for our first DCL I just can't justify not letting my son experience that. I'm ok with the people who give candy...he will be excited for whatever he receives. I'm still trying to come up with something crafty :) It's a Very Merrytime cruise so I'd love to do something Christmas related, but don't want to offend anyone...so I'm scouring websites in search of ideas....
It is hard when it's a big group! I was in a group once that was well over 100 people and the group elected not to split. I think that was the one that I finally said "Okay. Done." LOL!
I would have told them that was fine for them, but I couldn't do that much! That's crazy!

Have never cruised - but keep seeing references to - FE - fish extenders. What is this? Seems like a very strange sounding name related to 'fishing'??? :confused3

There are hooks outside of each room where people hang their cubbies for the exchanges. Those hooks are in the shape of fish.

Quick course in Fish Extenders:

HOW DID THIS FISH EXTENDER IDEA GET STARTED?
The idea was the brainstorm of a woman named Debbie For the first Magical sailing through the Panama Canal back in 2005. Debbie thought it would be a fun way for others to exchange gifts.

WHAT IS A FISH EXTENDER? (FE)
Outside your room onboard is a message holder, in most cases it's shaped like a fish:fish holder wonder 2012 1408 100_7536.JPG

The fish is there for Disney to place important communications to you such as excursion tickets and notes from the Cruise staff. It is like a mailbox for your room. A Fish Extender (FE) it is something that you hang off the fish. By hanging the Fish Extender off of the fish, the Cast Members can still use it for its original purpose.THIS IS NOT A ONE ON ONE EXCHANGE, YOU ARE PART OF A GROUP. All the people in the exchange buy or make little items and place them in each other's fish extenders. It is great fun to come back and check the items you have received.

Once a cruise meet thread is up and running, someone in the group will (should?) step up and say "I'll maintain the Fish Extender exchange list". That person is the center point for all those who want to participate in the exchange. The list can be as simple as DISnames/room number/number of guests or as involved as full names/room number/ages of guests/like & dislikes/allergies/favorite characters/whatever is deemed necessary to know assemble the gifts.

Then each room on the FE list (note this will not be everyone on the Cruise Meet thread for your specific cruise), makes a Fish Extender holder. This is basically an organizer-type hanging bag with separate pockets for each person in the room:door magnets 4 wonder oct 2011 256 100_3589 1500.jpg

The most common Fish Extenders are ones that have a pocket for each person in that stateroom. Some are very fancy, some are very plain. Some are store bought, some are homemade. Search "Disney fish extender" and you will get options that range in price. You should make sure your Fish Extender is between 8" & 12"" wide. Otherwise it starts to get in the way of your stateroom door. It should not exceed 5 feet; otherwise it will hit the floor. If you are creating your own it is suggested you make the pockets a little deeper than normal too. It will keep items from falling out and keep curious hands from reaching in (average depth is 5-6 inches)but 8-11 is a better way to go if you are making it yourself

They also make up gifts (either individual gifts or room gifts - whatever is decided by your group) to be delivered during the cruise).

One note about the gifts, some groups set up specific delivery dates, and specify "each person gets a gift" or "only one gift per room" or (even) maximum/minimum price ranges for gifts. Other groups just say "whatever", so people can choose what/how many gifts to give. Some give individual gifts, others only one gift per room, while others might do one for the adults and separate gifts for kids. Or only gift the kids.

WHO CAN JOIN?
Anyone and everyone! Even if your stateroom is 2 adults, you can join and have just as much fun! The only rule I would say is to HAVE FUN!! It's not about the gift it's about the thoughtfulness behind it.

HOW MANY CABINS WILL BE IN MY FE GROUP and WHO PARTICIPATES???
DO I HAVE TO BUY FOR EVERYONE? DO I NEED TO GIVE PER CABIN?
Sort of…You have to do something for EVERY CABIN PARTICIPATING, You choose whether its adult gifts or kids gifts or cabin gifts or a combination.YOU CAN NOT LEAVE A CABIN OUT IF THEY HAVE SIGNED UP. At the very least, 1 cabin gift, per cabin. Some do a cabin gift, and then do a few items for the kids. Some do individual for each member of the cabin. Some people are crafty and make gifts, and some are store bought. Some gifts are to be used on board and some are to be used at home.

How many rooms you give to depends on your cruise meet group. They range in average from 10-15 sometimes even 25 and up. Most do the smaller groups with the option to join more than one. It makes it more manageable.

This is typically a whole cabin event. You usually may not just sign up the kids. There are some cruise meet groups that have Adult Only groups. But not Kids only. Some groups say “every room gets/gives gifts” (even if two rooms are really just one family). Others say that rooms that are a nuclear family can give together. While other groups say: If you are signing up more than one cabin to participate, you should not combine them. It’s not fair for people to make items for 2 cabins and receive from 1 of them. They should be counted as 2 separate cabins. It’s up to each Fish Extender group/organizer to decide on the “rules”.

WHEN LEAVING A GIFT, DO WE IDENTIFY WHO IT IS FROM?
Some people do put some kind of to/from tag on their items. Most want to know who it came from. Some do it because they don't want people to think they got shorted a gift or assumed theft of an item. Others go with the original intent and deliver anonymous gifts.

DO WE PUT GIFTS IN EVERY DAY OF THE CRUISE? WILL I HAVE TO WALK ALL OVER THE SHIP TO DELIVER?
That's up to you. Most deliver ONCE. Most do one gift, some do multiple gifts. You don’t want to spend your whole cruise delivering gifts. It can be time consuming. Most deliver over the whole length of the cruise. One morning you do all the cabins on decks 4-6 that are Forward. Another time you do all the mid cabins on decks 1-4. And so on. It’s suggested you break up your list by location: Forward, Mid and Aft before leaving home. Large zip locks are good for this. Start from your highest deck and work your way to your lowest.

*If you are on a longer cruise, consider delivering later in the week. Most deliver in the beginning and then there is nothing towards the end (and the kids like to find stuff in the holder). You don’t have to deliver all on the first day, especially on the longer cruises. On the reverse – don’t deliver the last night, as people will be packing up and putting their bags out for pick up.

Don’t deliver in the middle of the night, when no one is around, or when people are off the ship when sticky fingers are more likely.

I’M IN A CONCIERGE SUITE, HAVE A GTY RESERVATION OR SOMEONE IN MY FE GROUP IS. WOULD THERE BE A PROBLEM BEING PART OF THE FE?
No, there are fish message holders outside all rooms on board. Once a GTY reservation has a room assigned, it can be reported to the group.

MY GIFTS ARE TO BIG TO FIT IN THE POCKET, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH IT?
1. You can lean it against the door
2. You can hang on door knob
3. You can leave it at guest services, marked for each stateroom and then notify each stateroom to go pick up.
4. You could try to ask the stateroom host out in the hallway to place it inside the cabin.
5. You can just hang it on the "fish.

DO PEOPLE CARRY ALL THEIR GIFTS IN THEIR SUITCASES?
Most do, however, you can ship your items down. They must arrive by the day before you sail and contain no food items (they will get snagged by the dogs and get held up). Make sure your package is addressed exactly how your name is in your reservation and it will be in your stateroom when you get there (even before your luggage!). You can also send to your hotel if you are staying at one before you sail. KEEP IN MIND... you can not ship home from the ships.

I HAVE TO DROP OUT.. HOW DO I DO THAT.
It’s very important that if you have to drop out for any reason you notify the person running your FE. (They can be found on the cruise page you signed up on)

It’s important so that others who are participating don’t count you in, when you won’t be there. Everyone’s time is valuable. It’s courteous to let someone know.People put a lot of time and effort into FE gifts, and are expecting something in return. It’s not fair to the group if you bow out without letting anyone know

ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?
  • It has been pointed out that some Travel Agents are giving wrong info. They are saying you can hang a FE holder outside your door and expect gifts.
  • Cast members are not walking around like Tinkerbelle handing out gifts.
  • You cannot just show up on a cruise with gifts to randomly pass out (well you could but that would be “pixie dusting” not participating in a FE).
  • You have to find your Cruise Meet group and join a FE group to know how many people are participating, how large your group will be and all other info.
  • This is a voluntary program and is not sanctioned by Disney.
