First visit to Universal

I have reservations at Doubletree Universal. Chose it partially due to location. I have looked at some reviews about hotel needing work. Should I change hotel or keep it due to close location?

I don't have anything recent, but the Mrs and I stayed here for 3 nights in January 2015.
Hotel seemed to be the typical Hilton standards, well kept and clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. Great breakfast and of course the signature warm chocolate chip cookie when you check in. Pool area was clean and well manicured. Beds were comfy. Location is perfect if you are planning to visit Universal

Unless they have changed hands recently and driven the place into the ground, I would definitely stay here again.

I have stayed at this Doubletree many times for conferences. It is worn down and in need of rehab. The shuttles to USO are limited and not trust worthy. Too much chlorine in the pool ruined a swim suit.
I would recommend the Hyatt place which is next door, much nicer, no charge for parking and breakfast is included. You also might check for specials at Cabana Bay. I have been able to get pretty good rates there.

Ooh yes, good call. Check Cabana Bay for specials if you are worried about offsite hotels.
Sometimes prices can rival offsite properties and you will be right on Universal grounds (2 minute shuttle ride to the parks or 5-7 minute walk)
Cabana Bay is very new (opened 2014) and has some nice amenities.
Amenities are similar to a Disney moderate but prices are more like Disney Value resorts
