Hello everyone! We are going on our first Universal trip in November! We have 4 day tickets and will not be getting the Express Pass (renting a house, no more $$, lol). Touring plans has our dates (Nov 13-16) as 2's on their crowd calendar so hopefully we will be fine without the EP. I've read thru all the wonderful tips and stickies and am confident that we will have a great time! Letting each of our (adult) children pick one restaurant for lunch each day so can't make any plans for where we are eating yet. My main question is regarding rides - I get motion sickness from VR rides and spinning rides. Star Tours and Tea Cups type rides. So what specific rides should I avoid at Universal? I am fine on most roller coasters. I am not a huge HP fan but all the kids are so I know a lot of our time will be spent in those areas of the parks. I want to hang out with my family but don't want my trip ruined by getting sick - then I am down for the rest of the day and I want to enjoy our time at the house after leaving the parks too, not have to spend it laying down, lol! Can you guys help me make a list of rides to avoid?

Frankly, you will do better with a list of rides you CAN do and at the moment, the only one I can think that does not have a screen or spinning is sky high trolley unless you want to do water rides, and you will get very WET on those.

There are a few shows you could see.

Also, since you like roller coasters, hulk and rip ride rockets.

If spinning does you in, beware Men in Black.

But really, consider better living through chemistry - there is an anti-nausea patch that works for 3 days, and does an excellent job combating motion sickness. It is called trans-derm scop patch. Works wonders. It is so much more fun to be able to participate and enjoy the rides.

Ones generally to avoid are Forbidden Journey and Simpsons.

They seem to be the ones that affect most people that report back on the boards.

A few report Transformers and very few say Minions. I have motion sickness issues and Simpson’s is the one ride i’ll Never go on again. It was awful. I’m like you and do just fine on roller coasters.........

Hulk, RRR and The Mummy are all fabulous!

Forbidden journey I can do a few times usually and TF affects me a little. Minions I never had issues with.

Gringotts doesn’t spin, but does swoosh you around a little......

Spider-Man has a spinny bit, this is where I do the ice skater trick and focus on one spot as we spin.......I can’t close my eyes as it makes me worse.......seems I’m the only one though as others find closing their eyes work......not for me, makes me worse.

And yes, MiB does have a spin part.

There are still plenty of things for you to do, not sure how you are with rides like Dr Doom......it may be short, but it’s so much fun......:thumbsup2

I love water rides, as long as it is warm out. I am usually the one on Kali River Rapids that ends up soaked. Thanks!

I was thinking about getting the patch but saw in the literature on it that you shouldn't drink alcohol while taking it and I am not giving up THAT on my vacation! I'd rather skip the rides, lol.

Thanks for the detailed list! I will go on Youtube and check out the POV on Dr Doom - not sure what that one is. I will avoid Simpsons! I'm thinking of trying some OTC meds/drops and see if they will help with the 3D/VR rides. What would you say is the one that has the least amount of spinning, to try? Or maybe what is the one you would hate to miss the most? Thanks!

There’s no perfect list. The rides that bothered me (Minions and Simpsons) didn’t bother dh and the rides that bothered him (really just Forbidden Journey) didn’t bother me at all. Everyone reacts differently and if you go by lists from us, you may miss out on some great rides!

I don’t miss any of them.......except Simpsons.

Try some after you’ve checked them out on YouTube and see how you go........The Simpson’s seems to be the one that universally upsets most people if they’re affected with motion issues generally.

Read on this board about someone who "drank around the world" on the patch and a various other confirming reports. My friend using the patch also had no issues combining alcohol and the patch, for 9 days.

My mother has motion sickness especially with VR rides so this is the list of things she cannot do. Transformers, Spiderman, Simpsons, Men in Black has a spin at the end of the ride that is not terrible but if you are sensitive, it's enough to do the trick. Shrek 4D is just like a 3D movie so if you can handle those then you'll be fine. Both Harry Potter rides (Forbidden Journey and Escape from Gringotts) are a very big trigger for motion sickness, they almost did me in and I don't even have motion sickness. I highly suggest avoiding Simpsons like the plague. Despicable Me is similar to Simpsons sorta? I would probably avoid that one too. I hope you enjoy your trip though! Jurassic Park and Revenge of the Mummy are some awesome rides that you could definitely handle! Have a nice day!

Thank you! :)

I wanted to come back here and post my experience! I took Bonine the first 3 days and Dramamine non drowsy the last day and did not get any motion sickness! I rode everything except Rip Ride Rocket, Minnions, Simpsons and Spider Man. We had a great time! We went on Tuesday-Friday and the first 3 days were a 2/10 crowd level and it was awesome! Never waited more than 8 minutes for a ride, including 2 rides on Hulk Coaster. Friday was much busier and I think we only rode one ride that day? We went back and forth to both parks each day and ate at City Walk 2 days in between park hopping. We loved 3 Broomsticks and Butterbeer! I am not a Harry Potter fan/follower but still could appreciate the detail of those park areas. RRR got stuck for about 45 minutes one day with a car almost at the top of the uphill climb! I felt very sorry for those people! They eventually got them over the top and let it coast to the top of the other platform, then they evacuated everyone down all those stairs! I would have been freaking out!

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know how my trip went. Thanks for all the input!

Glad it all went well!!! Sounds like you had a great trip.....there`s nothing worse than feeling icky after a ride....

We saw that happen to RRR years ago...….it was terrifying seeing all those folk stuck at the top of the hill lift......yes, I wouldn't have coped well with that!!!

Thanks for coming back with an update, we do appreciate it...….:wave2:
