Our family is going to WDW in Dec and we have finally talked my mom (73) into getting a scooter for the first time. She can walk some but not 10 miles a day like we put in so that is the reason for the scooter. My question is when we want to find a place for the parades on Main street can we just find an empty spot along the curb to park the scooter with her sitting on it and the rest of the family sitting beside her on the curb or do we have to go to the handicapped area.

I figured when we did rope drop that our family would just surround her so she only runs into us and not people she doesn't know. She is really nervous about that.

If anyone has any other tips that would help for a first timer we would love to hear them.

thanks

yes you are fine to sit on main street ( side walk) you your ECV) or I am almost 100% sure. as fair as rope drop I think that could work or you could go and wait about 5 minutes for the big rush to clear out I think even talking around her you will have people cutting between you.

at rope drop be prepared for people to cut in beside you if you are not close enough to be run over as pp said would wait for first crush to leave area before you go forward. I have had a parent pull her child so close to me that I could not put my cane down as I was walking without putting on her child. she was like watch out for my child. I have more trouble moving after parades and night time shows than rope drop

Thanks for all the info. We are looking to rent from Buena Vista Scooters. Is this a good place? It says Disney sponsered so they will drop off and pick up without us being there.

Hi I have a powerchair but have used scooters in the past. I find the disabled areas the CM allocate are best for your mother and your family. You need to get there early to get a space though. Otherwise people stand in front of you and the person in the scooter or wheelchair can't see. Also I have had a bad experience with that company. Very rude actually and would not replace a scooter that was not the model I ordered. I wanted a 4 wheel and they delivered a 3 wheel. I almost tipped it over and then the battery failed. Not impressed. The CM are lovely to accommodate you if you have a scooter or wheelchair but beware other guests aren't! I have been pushed out of my wheelchair more than once.

With regards to the parade viewing: depending on the size of your party, if you all wish to watch the parade together then I recommend finding your own spot along the parade route, maybe with the kids sitting in front of her so nobody else moves in to stand there. In our experience, the wheelchair seating is very crowded -- as in virtually elbow-to-elbow with wheelchairs and ECVs very close to each other. Plus they may only allow 1 person to accompany your mom standing behind her ECV, possibly 2 with the 2nd seated in front of her ECV; so the rest of the party would need to find a spot elsewhere anyway.

Enjoy your vacation!

Suggest you check with Walker Mobility. I have had great luck with their scooters. As far as rope drop, I would hold for 5 minutes, and then go. She may freak out at the rope drop crowd and not want to ride the scooter any more. Riding the scooters in crowds is nerve wracking enough without charging with a crowd. She will hit someone at least once. Won't be her fault but someone will cut in front of her. Just plan that it will happen. I would get a blinking light for the scooter or her back if you plan to be out at night. It helps those behind you. Those cheap glow necklaces help some.
