First Trip to DL - solo (COMPLETE) new link p.43

Wow Pam. Just WOW!

Yesterday's pictures were great but today's were even better. Reading a DL TR is such sensory overload for me because I have never been there. Couple that all the rides you were able to do it one day. Well, I am totally speechless.

Thank you :goodvibes

We really did a lot of rides, it was awesome!

Lunch looks fab.

It was very tasty popcorn::

Space Mountain looks so cool.

Much better than at WDW but I do like the inside walkway at WDW.

Even the Nemo ride is pretty cool although I might get a little too claustrophobic for that. :rotfl:

It was really cool. Not claustrophobic when you get down inside the sub but going down the stairs it was a little bit.

Mr Toad's wild ride - Never been on it.

I loved it just as much as I remembered. We've got to get you to DL.

The New Orleans section is adorable.

::yes:: The details were gorgeous.

I am sure there is SO much more I want to say.

I do that all the time.

Sorry about your feet and I'm so happy you could switch shoes! :thumbsup2

I'm so glad we stopped and I saw the sandals. It took weeks for my feet to heal. My own fault, I wasn't thinking.

Was Believe on the Wonder the one with the little girl during the night? I can't quite remember but I cried at the end when Mickey came out onstage. It was so good! It amuses me to say this but Villains was my favorite on the Dream, it doesn't get many good reviews but I really enjoyed it. Oh my goodness, War Horse, have you seen the movie? When the main horse stands up for the other horse, I was weeping. And of course at the end when he hears his boy... I can't ever see that again, it was too much!

Yes, the one I loved was the one with the "little" girl. My eyes water a lot during plays (even Disney ones).

I have not seen the movie yet, but I want to now. It was so amazing onstage. The way they did the horses really impressed me. When they were about to put Joey down, I held my breath. Then, Albert just knew. It was fantastic.

Ahhh. I went right on the DCL website earlier to see if I missed them posting about 2015. Yes please, I'd love for you to let me know. I'm sure our paths will cross one of these days. I think it would be awesome if we could all manage to go on a cruise together, but everybody's schedule is so different.

I feel sure our paths will cross either at DL WDW or DCL! As soon as Kerry emails me I will let you know 2015 itinerary! Exciting!

Wow what an update! Thank you for sharing Pam. What details DL has I am blown away by it also. Love the look of the toad ride and isn't FL in DL just the most? I love the Germanic look of the buildings gives you a real Grimm tales feel. So pleased you got sandals your poor feet! You can clock up miles around the parks I bet you were in agony. Nice to hear Space Mountain is smoother. I love that ride but I find now as my arthritis progresses my neck cannot handle the jerkiness of it which is a shame. Does Star Tours have the new editions like WDW where there are different combinations each time you ride with C3PO guiding you?

I love the carousel I think they are so pretty. I notice the one in WDW is stationary more than it goes round we figured it must take so much time to load up!

Really enjoyed that update and if you were too tired for the Earl. Man you must have been cream crackered ( cockey rhyming slang for knackered meaning tired )

What a truly amazing day. What a shame that you did not rate Matterhorn. This is one of our favourite rides. I don't think I ever did Peter Pan's Flight at Disneyland and definitely need to put this right next year. I love the nemo ride, but Graham absolutely hates it.

The show on the Wonder is Disney Dreams and this is my favourite as well. Believe is either on the Dream or the Fantasy.

::yes:: I'm sure they will, I hope so at least :) awesome, thanks. I can't wait to book 2015. The plan is to do an Alaska cruise followed by a week in Aulani.

I loved all the rides in FL, they all seemed much longer than the ones in WDW, and I especially loved that everything was different. The details everywhere were gorgeous.

Yes, Star Tours has been updated like at WDW, I believe DL did theirs first.

I'm glad I saw the carousel because after that day it was boarded up for maintenance. I thought the one in WDW moves a lot, but it's very short too.

I know, too tired for Earl means really tired! :rotfl:

Corinna

It really was an amazing day, absolutely perfect.

I think the Matterhorn was a bit too jerky for my liking. I'll give it another try next time, I think the two sides are different right?

I was really surprised how different Peter Pan was, it was really neat. And I loved Nemo, it brought back a lot of good memories.

That's right, I can't seem to keep the shows on the ships straight. That one is so magical :)

Yes, they are supposed to be different. I have only ever done the Fantasyland side, which is supposed to be the slightly gentler version.

Pam, I just started your TR a few days ago and I'm all caught up. I've never had the desire to go to DL, but changed my mind after reading your TR.

Love your pictures. At times I felt like I was walking down the park streets with you.

It sounds like you had an amazing time with Alison. Club 33! Wow!

Hi Kathy! :wave2: thanks so much for coming over and reading :goodvibes

I never really gave DL much thought until last year, and after some research I decided I must get out there and see all the differences for myself. When I told family/friends about my plans a lot of them told me I wouldn't like it, it's smaller, it's older, ect... I absolutely LOVED it!!! I'm glad you've decided to go too, you won't regret it I assure you.

Thank you for the picture compliments :)

My day with Alison was so fabulous, it was such fun spending time with her.

Day 3:

I woke up at 7:00; I was out like a light at 9:40 the night before. I had planned to do the EMH at DL which started at 9:00 but I ended up catching up in the journal instead. I’ve learned from experience getting too far behind can be a bad thing. I had some fruit for breakfast while catching up. Since I missed the EMH I figured I would just relax by the pool until it was time for my massage at 11:30, so after getting ready I headed down to the pool.

I decided to take down my trash and recycling while heading to the pool, and I noticed a side door near the trash room. I figured I could get to the pool from there too so did a little exploring and found the grills.

I never saw them being used but I thought it was nice they were in their own little courtyard. I meandered along the sidewalk and went in search of the pool.

I was glad I chanced it because I found the pool shortly. They have all the entrances to the pool gated off where you have to use your room key to get in. It was a little annoying at times, but I’m sure the pool would be swamped with park goers if it wasn’t gated off.

I found a lounger and sat down to relax. Have I mentioned how magnificent these loungers were? I was in love!

I started to get a little hungry, the fruit didn’t last long. At first I figured I’d wait until after my massage, but I had over an hour until I needed to head to the spa so went to check out what Whitewater had to offer.

I took some pictures inside while waiting, they’re not the best but you get the general idea of the place, it was actually quite cute. I ordered an egg/cheese biscuit which they make fresh.

I took my sandwich back out to the pool and read on the Dis while I ate my sandwich. It was pretty good, there were actually two fried eggs in it, so I divided it into two open faced sandwiches, it was really high trying to eat it in one bite.

I headed over to the spa at 11:15 and checked in. They took me back to the changing rooms and showed me where to wait. I didn’t get any pictures inside, I just wanted to relax. It felt like I waited a while but it probably wasn’t. I didn’t have a clock with me so have no idea how long it was. I booked a 50 minute deep tissue massage and my goodness was it just what I needed! She chatted the whole time which I wasn’t crazy about, but it was fine. My shoulders were so tense I asked her to focus on my upper body and feet and she really worked out the tension I had built up. I actually hurt for a few days from how much pressure she had to use to get all the knots out but it was a good pain. All too soon it was over and I headed out to pay. They offered a DVC discount which was fabulous. It was originally $135 and the discount got it down to $108. Then tip on top of that. It was worth every penny!

After my lovely massage I went back up to the room. Next on the agenda was my Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour at 2:30. They told me I needed to show up 30 minutes early to choose my dinner and I still needed to pick up my ticket at Guest Services in front of DL I packed up what I felt I needed for the rest of the day, checked my emails, and headed over to DL shortly after 1:00. No problem getting my ticket at Guest Services and I was in the park by 1:30. I had at least thirty minutes to kill so headed into a shop Alison had pointed out the day before. There was this very cool bank vault in there. I thought it was really pretty.

After meandering around for a little bit I headed out, it was much too easy to lose track of time window shopping. It’s not like I’d had an active day at all, but I was hungry again. I knew I wouldn’t be able to last until the end of the tour, so went in search of some food. I was heading to get a dole whip and passed the Jolly Holiday Bakery and remembered the caprese sandwich I had on my list. That sounded really good at the moment so I headed in. There was no wait at all and I quickly ordered. It was 1:40 and I needed to check in at the tour podium in the next 20 minutes or so. Well, people came and went and I still hadn’t received my food. I was getting quite upset, for some reason this seems to happen to me often. A nice CM noticed me still waiting after 10 minutes and came to my rescue. Finally with sandwich in hand I went to find a table. I decided not to rush and just sit and relax.

Sorry this is blurry, it was a really tasty sandwich and I would definitely get it again. Very simple, tomatoes, mozzarella, lettuce, and balsamic vinaigrette on a rosemary bread. The bread made it extra delicious.

I’m glad I didn’t rush because when I got to the podium at 2:10 there was still plenty of time even after choosing my dinner options. And where would we be having dinner from? Why the Jolly Holiday Bakery of course! Too funny, I couldn’t believe the coincidence. I chose a salad this time since the sandwich really filled me up and I didn’t think I’d be up for another sandwich in three hours. We also had our choice of a drink and dessert. Apparently our food would be delivered to us after the tour was finished. There was time for a quick bathroom break before heading out and there was one conveniently situated right behind the tour podium. Then we were all equipped with our earpieces and receivers.

Soon after that our tour began. So, pretty much we walked around the park stopping at various locations where our guide told us neat info about Walt and his vision for DL. A lot of it I had heard before but some was completely new. At some points when we stopped she had us listen to old clips of Walt talking. They were very cool, but the audio was so low it was hard to hear even with the volume turned all the way up. I hope Disney fixes this soon, it was a bit tacky.

I do not know how she walked comfortably in these shoes all day.

We stopped and listened to a clip of Walt on opening day of DL which was really neat.

She told us about the names on the windows.

I do not remember what we talked about here. I was already getting hot and we had many hours left. Oh yes, she was telling us about the hub and all the different lands.

A bit smaller than the castle I’m used to but still pretty.

This one’s better

We were heading for a ride on Peter Pan

I wasnt sure how realistic that was with our large group but I wasnt going to pass on a ride. As it turned out the ride went down right when the first people of our group had gotten to the front. Our guide told us wed come back later in the tour.

What is this? I had just seen the carousel the day before. I didnt remember it being on my list of closings at the time but Im pretty sure it was.

Hi Toad, Ill be back for you later!

Bye Peter, Ill be surprised if we do come back for a ride.

I never got on Dumbo this trip.

We went on a long walk to the next stop

I thought this was a cute detail

We stopped along a path out of the way of other park guests where we were told a story about Walt and the army. He lied about his age to get in and when he got back his girlfriend had left him, and his dog had died. And his older brother whom he adored had moved away. I think Im remembering correctly, please somebody correct me if Im wrong.

We continued our tour and stopped here

Later in life Walt found this for Lilly as a present. A giant piece of petrified tree. I think I stopped later in the trip for a picture of the plaque. To be honest I was getting hot and tired and not paying full attention to the tour at this point.

On to New Orleans Square where I got the backstory of the Dream Suite. Walt had wanted to make it as an apartment for his family to stay at when they had late nights at the park but his idea was never finished. He had also wanted to build a jazz club in the building on top of Café Orleans but that idea was never finished either. Apparently Walt loved jazz and wanted a jazz club to enjoy after Lilly and the girls had gone to sleep.

Dream Suite entrance, again

Club 33 balcony

We would split into two groups and get a peak at the Club 33 lobby. I was in the Lilly group and would go first.

I just noticed the instruments and other musical items up there. That is where Walt wanted the jazz club.

Why hello beautiful, Ive seen you before.

Not good pictures inside, sorry guys.

I took the time while the other group was inside to run and grab a soda. I had drunk the two I had brought with me and was positively dying of thirst.

After everyone had seen inside the lobby the tour continued. We stopped near the Haunted Mansion where we were told a little history. Originally it was to be a walking tour by a live guide, but the idea of a 'ghost host' was born and it became a ride. I think I would much prefer a walking tour inside the HM, you'd probably get to see a lot more of the awesome details, but sadly it wasn't meant to be. Tour continued we headed to Tomorrowland. It seemed like we walked forever just to stop and talk about something. I think she talked about the World's Fair and the CP. We lost two of our group at this stop. The gentleman was having such a hard time walking and they just decided to take the train back to the podium and meet us when we were done.

Passing Nemo I noticed it had quite a line. Im so glad we went on it yesterday.

We stopped and sat down for a while here. I can not for the life of me remember what was said.

How cute is he!

My suspicions were founded because we did not get back to Peter Pan. I hoped they would give us a FP for it though. We headed to the Memories with Lincoln show. While we waited for the next show we were allowed to tour the building. I didn't finish looking and had every intention to get back there later in my trip but it never happened. We actually didn't see the show because our food was ready for us. Meredith, our guide, quickly wrapped up as well she could. She told us a very sad story of Walt's last days in the hospital. I cried.

While we walked back to our starting point she had us listen to a song from Mary Poppins about the birds which Ive never liked but apparently Walt loved. They took back our equipment and we split back into the two groups. My group went first again which was quite nice. The moment I had been waiting for was finally here. And honestly, I would have paid the full tour price just to see Walt's apartment. We got two new tour guides for this portion, Garrett and Mary.

He told us about the fire house and pointed out the pole in the back. Then we were led behind the scenes where no photos were allowed. I hated the no photos rule, like really hated.

We walked up the very same steps Walt walked up many years ago. I thought it was so cool they haven't replaced them. The apartment was not what I expected, but it was beautiful, like stepping back in time. Everything is how it was and all the more special for it. Apparently Walt let Lilly decorate it as she liked. There was a red floral carpet and vintage Victorian chairs with tiny little ottomans covered by lace doilies. Two twin pull out beds across the room from each other were couches during the day. There was a picture of Walt's mother above his bed, and Lilly's mother above hers. Lots of other pictures in ornate frames decorated the walls and various antiques graced the shelves. There was a huge working music box against one wall. They don't operate it though because the discs can get stuck. And a small music box with a big horn that doesn't work anymore sat on a shelf. There was a beautiful mirrored case I was aching to see inside but was not in luck. On top of it were tiny little books that appeared to be books of the Bible. I asked about them but they are in German so they're not sure what they are. They showed us the mini kitchen. The most important thing to Walt was the grilled cheese press, grilled cheese was his favorite. There was also a toaster, sink, and fridge. Beautiful antique glasses were in the cupboard. A big crock looking thing that said Tom and Jerry sat on the counter. They told us Tom and Jerry is a rich liquor drink, I've never heard of it but that doesn't mean much. There were delicate little matching cups as well. They let us see the bathroom a few at a time. It was pink and had a very fancy shower with many nozzles. There was a chest of drawers outside the bathroom that held games for the grandchildren when they came to visit. A gorgeous brush and comb set sat on top of the dresser. They told us a little story of Walt standing at the window during opening day and a member of the Mickey Mouse Club noticed tears coming down his cheeks. She asked what was the matter and it was just that he was so happy people were coming to his park. This was the point I started crying. I probably would have started sobbing if I hadn't somehow been able to keep it in. Just being in the room Walt spent so much time in, captured just like it was when he was alive, was above and beyond special.

They took pictures of us with our cameras which I was glad about. You can see part of the room behind me.

Back down the stairs where we literally walked in Walt's footsteps. At some point in the apartment they told us that originally the fire pole went from the apartment to down below but one day while Walt was upstairs reading two boys climbed up the pole into the apartment. It was closed after that.

You can see the pole in the back left

Then we sat down to eat our dinner. The salad was actually very good and I'm glad I didn't get another sandwich because I wasn't very hungry. I had gotten a sugar cookie as my dessert and ended up taking that with me.

I was seated with four other people from the tour and we had such a lovely time chatting about previous trips and the differences between DL and WDW. It was a very comfortable meal which was nice, those kinds of things can go either way. We all got a special tour only pin. Mine had a blemish and I really was not happy with it so asked for a different one. It was no problem and I was presented with a perfect pin. It never hurts to ask and I know I would have regretted not asking and gone home with a blemished pin.

They also gave us a FP for Peter Pan, good only for that day but it was better than nothing. After we had finished our food and finished chatting we all went our separate ways. I tried to give our tour guide a tip but she wouldn't accept it. I mean I really tried and she very kindly refused. I am very glad I did the tour, but with the day being so hot I know I didn't enjoy it as much as I normally would have.

I really want to do that tour someday. It is so nice to read about it. Thanks for sharing. Good thing they ended up giving fastpasses for Peter Pan. Jolly Holiday was on my must list for this trip, but I bumped it for Cafe Orleans. I am rethinking it after reading your report. Your lunch and dinner sounded fantastic. I wish I could make up my mind.

Seeing Walt's apartment would make me emotional too. I am sure I will cry. Your pin is stunning, and I am glad you exchanged it for an unblemished one.

Your relaxing morning by the pool and spa time sound amazing.

Catching up. There are quite a few posts for me to read so I may not comment on everything.

Seems like the Walk in Walt's footsteps might be a tour worth taking!

I knew Jolly Holly didn't sound right  I went back and changed the post. You were very nice not to point out my mistake :) that sandwich was super delicious and very fresh. The salad too, very fresh. It had a medley of greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, goat cheese, and raspberry vinaigrette. I am quite disappointed I never got to Cafe Orleans though, that was high on my list.

I almost thought they forgot about Peter Pan so was very pleased to get the FP.

Being in the apartment, with all that history, was so special. I knew I'd cry and almost didn't until the end.

A little piece of the blue part on the front was peeling up, I'm so glad I asked for another one.

Your relaxing morning by the pool and spa time sound amazing.

It was a perfect morning, that massage was amazing. Ill have to remember though, to get the massage the first day of vacation.

No worries and no rush :)

I'm glad I took the tour, it was very nice.

The tour sounds amazing. If I ever go to DL, I'll put the tour on the top of my must-do list. Thanks for sharing your feelings with us.

Glad you got a perfect pin. What a wonderful keepsake. :goodvibes

The tour sounds great. What a shame that Peter Pan was down, but it is great that you got a Fastpass. I love the pin.

The tour was definitely worth doing. I just didn't expect the walking all around the park, but I really didn't know what to expect. All I knew was that I'd see inside the apartment and that was why I booked it.

I'm really glad I asked for another pin, I really would have regretted that. It's beautiful.
