Hello. Can someone point me in the right direction on where to buy lanyards? Can I buy them in the park? Is it more expensive? Also, what about the pins? Do I buy them at Disney? And why do I want to trade a brand new pin? Any insight is appreciated.

LOL! You're like me, when I first heard about pin trading, I was like, 'Why would I want to trade away a pin I just bought because I obviously liked?'

Anyways... It's just a fun way really to strike up a conversation, many times with the cast members not just other park goers. There are actually "Starter Lanyards" you can buy in all the parks.. it's a lanyard with several 'basic' pins, the price is very reasonable, I can't recall specifically now what it is. Then you start adding.... buy what intrigues you, buy what you like, buy the collector's ones, etc. If you see someone with a lanyard full of pins, approach them and ask if they're willing to trade, compare with each other what you have. The more rare ones most likely will not be traded, but you never know. Eventually you'll learn the pins and then the hunt will be on for that SPECIAL one!!! Then you'll stop everyone you see wearing a lanyard, LOL!

And then there are people like my daughter. She loves pin collecting, not pin trading so much. :lmao:

My daughter and I were bitten by the pin trading bug a few years ago. We had a few pins and of course whenwe got to WDW had to buy more, at $7 to 12 a pin. Now, we buy them from e-bay for around 60 cents each. You can trade with castmembers or guests. Some places have benches and tables where big-time traders bring binders for you to pick from. They are set up next to Disney pin stations, the traders will let you know what new pin they want. You buy the pin that they want and trade to them for the pin that you want/need. Warning....fun and expensive.

as a kid, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011 and Oct 2012.

We added pin trading when we went in May. I bought 100 pins from ebay to start out, and divided them up between 7 kids. Before long my brother and husband were trading too. I was the last one to catch the bug, but only b/c everyone else was doing it!!! My son bought a couple new Rock'N'Rollercoaster pins there, but those will never be traded. For the grown ups that started while on that trip, we bought a couple starter kits. Mine was the only expensive one as they were offering a "spend $40 and get a lanyard starter set for $X." They do those kinds of specials all the time, but you never know what is going to be included. We got lucky I guess. As for lanyards, we bought most of ours off ebay. I bought a hip lanyard at WDW that I hate. The string is retractable, but all that means is that the pins weigh it down so I trip over the lanyard. So...I bought a new one off of ebay for this trip.

Anyway, we bought 200 pins for this trip, since they will be divided 11 ways. I think I paid $123.00 for 200, and shipping was free. That is really the best way to do it. It doesn't matter if you get doubles b/c you are going to want to trade them. We dumped them all in a hat and divided them that way to be fair. Then the kids started trading amongst themselves at the dinner table!

CM's have to trade unless they are wearing a certain color lanyard. I think the color is green for kids only. So, just watch out for that and you will be fine. They will trade for a pin that is already not on their lanyard. That's why buying off ebay works so well b/c they are usually ones I want to trade, so it is easy to give them up and I have a lot to choose from. Some places have books that you can trade from too. The rule there is that as long as there is not a match to the one you are trading on that page, you can trade it. We just ask at the stores if they have the book. For me, I like to get a whole collection, so there are different ways to do it. My family sticks usually to collections with the occassional odd pin that we take a liking to. My collections last year were the Muppets, and the villains in a bottle. One of my DD's collected all the little Disney characters: Belle as a little girl, etc. One of my DD's collected all the sayings pins: Wanna trade?, etc... We had some Star Wars action going on, and my brother likes the Nightmare Before Christmas ones. Everyone is different. Good luck and have fun!

The CMs wearing green lanyards are the "kids" traders. My daughter is pretty shy and she prefers to find them as she gets a little nervous about asking to trade. But, all the CMs are very nice about it. Just help your kids to remove and reattach the pins as those little backs get dropped a lot( at least by my kiddos). It's very fun and a cool, portable way to collect something from Disney.

Oh, another pointer is: do not touch the CM's or interupt them when they are talking to someone else to pin trade. One of the things we learned is that the CM will bring the lanyard away from their body so you can look at it. Then your pin needs to be removed and the back placed back on it before handing it to them. Just good pin trading etiquette.

I am glad you are interested in pin trading. It is fun. I take a picture of the pins I plan to trade prior to the next trip. I then put those pins on my lanyard and put it aside. If I stumble on a collector's item, then I keep it. I try to limit that to one or two per trip so I don't get too full on them.

I also started doing categories and not just simple trading for trading-sake. One trip I did Princesses. Another I did Pirate's of the Caribbean. Then I did Villains. ...and so on. I made the mistake of thinking this past Christmas I would trade Christmas pins....LOL at myself!!!...so I just randomly traded.

It's fun to talk to the CM and the other guests and hear their stories.

Have fun!!

Keep in mind that the cheap pins off of ebay are commonly scrappers - not official disney pins. The CM's will still trade these with you, but ethically, I have issue with buying those pins.

In the 300 pins I have bought off of ebay, I have never come across a "scrapper". All of mine are official trading pins, or I would not purchase or trade them. It can't be all that common if so many people buy from ebay. I see occassionally that someone comes across fakes, but I have never heard that it is a common occurance. It is not hard to discern a real Disney pin as they have the marks on the back stating they are official trading pins. If it ever happened to me I would send them back and get my money back. Ebay is really good about protecting their buyers. I would suggest that if u are nervous about this happening, that u find a site that pictures exactly what the markings on the back should look like. That way u can spot a fake if u don't know what they are supposed to look like. Cm's are not supposed to trade anything other than official trading pins, nor any pins that are damaged. Sellers are pretty good about replacing damaged pins as well, but I have only received one pin in 300 that was chipped, so I didn't bother to send it back, and I did not trade it. It is not unethical to save money on pins. It would be to knowingly trade fakes or damaged pins though.

Thanks for clarifying!

When we went to disneyland 2 years ago a former co- worker of mine turned me on to pin trading. I bought a couple of lots on ebay and went to town. I still have a bunch left and may get some more before we go to WDW. My daughter has a lanyard that I put together for her and has decided that when we go she'd like to trade some of her tinkerbells for some stitchies. :)

Any cast member wearing a lanyard, or a hip pouch with pins on it, is required to trade up to 2 pins to anyone who asks.

I was a pin newbie when I went, but it was super easy to get the hang of, and it was a lot of fun talking pins with the cast members. I went into it thinking it was something they did more so with kids, but would trade with an adult occasionally. That wasn't my experience at all. I was never turned away.

I never did any trades between other people- just CM's. I went down with 20 pins, but wound up sharing them with my niece and nephew. I bought SO many $12 mystery packs, it wasn't even funny. Next time, I intend to go down with a lot more than 20 pins to start.

I purchased about 10 non-mystery pins that I kept. Those are my pins because I liked them. The trading pins- some of them I kept, some I traded.

I didn't trade for expensive pins, I traded for pins I liked, or characters I liked. It was a lot of fun.

I bought my own lanyard at Claire's on clearance. It was a Nightmare Before Christmas one. I bought one for my friend, niece, and nephew each just at Dollar Tree last minute.

I did buy 1 lanyard at Disney when my own lanyard became crowded, but I didn't like it as much. I hate that it velcros on the bottom. I prefer the styles that have a clamp/locking thing behind the neck.

Tips-
Pick some up on ebay before going. Buying them at the park is pricey, and will add up super fast if you want to trade. It's addicting, so be prepared for that.

Buy some locking backs for the pins you want to keep, and lock them on your lanyard. I think we lost 3 pins the first day to lost backs.

Keep your trading pins in a bag- this made it easier and faster to trade, just pull out the bag, grab a pin, and trade. I kept 2 baggies in my backpack. One was for pins to trade, the other was for pins I had already gotten and wanted to keep.

Talk to your kids about trading, but maybe set some limits. My niece and nephew were SO into it, they were trading anything they got their hands on- even the expensive ones we bought as souvenirs for them. Decide how often you'll stop to do a trade, or how many pins they can have to trade each day, and what to do with pins they do not wish to trade at all. For instance- if it's locked on the lanyard, it's off limits.

With kids, I would limit trading to doing it with cast members. There are some shady traders at the parks who will try to take advantage of you and your kids. I saw one woman who must have had 50 lanyards displayed on her scooter, and she was trying to talk people into buying a brand new pin, trading it to her with the receipt for one of her old pins. This allows her to then return the pin for a full refund. So, just be aware when trading to non-cast members.

Keep in mind, though, that with China using the official molds, it's harder than ever to tell the scrappers from official.

Colors are sometimes off. The surface may appear dull, bubbled, or have odd textures to it. The edges might be rough, or have chips in it.

In nearly every instance, the pins will have the official Disney stamp on the back.

There is absolutely no difference between the pins I buy off of ebay and the pins I bought directly from Disney. They are not flawed in any way. There are no bubbles, no chips, no rough edges, and they are not dull. In fact, I got some of the same ones AT Disney that I bought off of ebay. Again, if I got fakes, ebay covers my butt and I would be able to send them back. No way am I spending $8.00 on a pin to trade it. C'mon.

Besides, every pin I have, even the ones I bought directly FROM Disney, were made in China. It says so right on the back.

Can someone answer the question about where to buy the lanyards? Before the trip? Online? Walmart? Etc. Or at the disney park? Please advise as we just got our pins in the mail today. Thanks!

I bought my boys each a lanyard from shopko last week. It was in the boys section. I am still looking for a girl one, hopefully Claire's will have one. Otherwise if needed I will buy one in the parks (last resort for me).

Good luck searching!

I also bought my lanyards from ebay. There are some great sellers located right in Florida, and their prices are affordable in my opinion. You can get cheap ones anywhere. I've even seen them in dollar stores, but I prefer the ones from Disney that have the detachable piece on the end. I fell in love with a Valentine's day lanyard with Mickey and Minnie kissing on it. It says "Happy Valentine's Day" on the detachable piece, but even though I will be there in September, the lanyard was too cute for me to pass up. I got all my kids their lanyards on ebay as well.

The easiest thing I can tell you on why you would trade a brand new pin is you don't. At the pin stations there are starter sets that have about 5-6 pins in them made for trading, you buy sets of those and if you see a cast member wearing a pin you like, trade them with one of the starter pins for the good one because they are forced to trade it.

I'll add in, if you have a Disney outlet store nearby, they often have older pins in there for cheap. There is one in St. Augustine and there used to be one in Las Vegas (but I haven't been there since 2007, so I don't know if it's still there).

Our last trip, I bought 20 4 packs of Jonas brothers pins for less than $3 each. DD2 kept one pack and traded the rest. They had some other pins there also that she bought to keep--a set of 4 princesses, that I picked up for $5; a couple of POTC for $2 each, etc.

Edited to add: There are 2 outlet malls in St. Augustine. You want the "indoor" one.
