First Trip and Magic Band question

Hello everyone, so excited to be leaving on our first cruise/WDW vacation!! We're huge Disneyland fans and have always wanted to visit Disney World.

We would like to purchase magic bands from the disney store website, but I keep getting emails saying to choose from the free ones through the Disney World website. If I purchase character ones from Disney Store, how do I go about using those for our trip?

Thanks so much!

Leslie

Yeah, buy the bands online and you can link them to your account, then just decline the free bands.

Or...keep the free ones and take them with you to book 3 more fast passes at the kiosks right away!

I don't understand that -- though I've heard something like it before. What's that about:?

If the extra MBs are linked to your MDE account then you can use them AND your other 3 to book fastpasses at the kioks in the parks.

We haven't received our free ones yet though I have "ordered" the colors we want. I bought 2 extra (designed) ones from the Disney store website, one for myself and one for my 4 yr old. When they arrived in the mail, there were very easy instructions to link them to my MDE included with the bands.

I did not decline the free ones so we would have extras just in case we lost one of the designed bands.

I don't think they can do this if the bands are linked to themselves (both sets). My understanding is it only works if the band is linked to someone not at Disney or a "dummy" person.

I think you're correct. They may have to be linked to a different MDE account.

The bands must be linked to a different account. As everyone loves to repeat, nothing is stored on the bands except a link to your MDE profile. So if both bands were on the same account, they would both reference the same FP reservations.

I don't know if this 'hack' is still present though, as I assume it would be trivial for Disney to only allow you to make FP reservations if you have park admission linked to your ticket to prevent this doubling, but who knows.

If this were really the case, wouldn't everyone take their free ones, the pay for an extra? Seems like a cheap way to get extra fastpasses. I'm sure Disney has thought of this.

You definitely can buy new ones and do it. There's been several posts about this. You just have to assign the bands to a different MDE acct, or your own MDE acct but to a "dummy" person on the acct. Who knows if Disney will close the loophole or not.

There was a whole thread about this a while back. It's closed for new posts but most of the info you need is in the first post of the thread.

Here is the link:

you need a separate MDE account with ticket tied to this account so you could only do this if you want to pay for the extra tickets. ok wow after reading some I stand corrected you can do it. you learn something new every day

No, you actually only need tickets to pre-book FP, not to make same day FP at the kiosks.

this was so much easer explanation then the post about how to do it that I briefly looked over just now. not sure if it is worth it for me to try it or not but I do go to disney enough that I could do this.
