Just arrived a couple of hours ago. We are staying at the Residence Inn Maingate, and will be here for 3 nights. We are so excited!! We have done countless trips to WDW, so we are real newbies here! But I guess we will figure it all out somehow. Funny thing is, I didn't go into overplanning mode on this trip. I figure we will just go and take it all in, instead of trying to follow a set schedule.

I hope you guys have a magical first trip and enjoy every minute because it goes by really fast!!!

Have fun --- please post all details concerning the hotel!!!
Extrememly interested in it -- may stay there in July.
(We'll be there with 1 toddler and his gear).

I AM in overplanning mode -- and I still have 2 months to go!!

I am excited to hear about your experience.

We will be staying at the Residence Inn Maingate in June and we also are first timers to DL, but have been to DW many times.

Have a great time there! We just left today after 3 nights and had a blast!

Any amount of time in the park is wonderful. If you didnt plan it, dont worry about it and go free style. You will surprise yourself in many different ways that way you cant be disappointed. Have a wonderful time and I really hope you post your magical experiences later for us to read.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

Yes, only 3 nights, because we are spending one day at American Girl Place, and 5 days in Carlsbad near San Diego.

We went to Downtown Disney and Disneyland last night. I had been prepared by lots of people to be "disappointed" because it is (or seems) smaller and more cramped than WDW, but we really liked how close everything is. DH says they could never handle the amount of people that come to WDW, because it is so close together. I loved how Disneyland and CA are right across from each other, and DTD too.

We walked from the Residence Inn Maingate last night, DH says it was a 2 block walk, I say it's more like 4 blocks, but it was very doable. But because we both have foot issues, and a 9 year old that is WAY too heavy to carry when she gets tired, we will probably buy ART passes for today and tomorrow.

You can enter DL by boarding the monorail in DTD, that was neat. The monorail looks so tiny compared to WDW! We had to wait about 25 minutes, because each train that came by only had a few seats available, because not many people were getting off. They only let on as many as they have seats for, and no standing. It was a fun ride too!

One thing that struck us when we got to DL that it all seemed so familiar, yet strange in that we couldn't easily find our way around. We had to resort to using a map, which we NEVER do anymore at WDW. We also found ourselves saying many times, "This is different than WDW" or "you know, in WDW, they do this different". It's really like we can enjoy DL because it's not as familiar, so we can appreciate it more. I have to say that, when we entered DL, I did not get that lump in the throat that I always get when we first get into WDW. But I'm sure that people that grew up taking their family to DL have the emotional response that they don't feel at WDW.

One more funny thing: after the fireworks show at DL, we were going to head down Main Street, when cast members directed a bunch of people to a "short cut" to the end of Main Street, which was a back alley. and we saw things that I would have never believed they would show at a Disney park, like cast members in a breakroom smoking cigarettes! I always believed that was a big NO NO for Disney. DH said "wouldn't it be funny to see Goofy walking around without his head, going to take a smoke break". I think that would be very sad!

You are right, it is not WDW. You can not compare the two parks since they are completely different.Remember, you are walking in Walts footsteps, so have fun.

I was going to say that this is where all the magic began. It's much more intimate than WDW. I loved WDW too. But DL is much more a touch to the heart because Walt started out there. Your right I do get all warm and fuzzy when I walk into Disneyland..

You are right, and we felt that today. We just got back from spending most of the day at DL. It was wall to wall people, I have never felt so crowded by people in my life! Even the queues are very cramped feeling. But it was great seeing how some rides are different. We LOVED Peter Pan's Flight at DL, much better than WDW (and we've always loved the one at WDW too!) And the daytime parade was awesome, hearing Walt's voice during the parade made me tear up.

Your reports are getting me excited for our trip in a few weeks. I was wondering how different WDL would feel to WDW.

Was wondering about your opinion of the Residence Inn. We have been trying to figure out if we wanted to do the ART or just try and walk it.

We like the Residence Inn very much. The grounds are very beautiful. We also like having the separate bedroom, the 2 TV's, and the kitchen.

We rode the ART today and it is so easy and convenient. $3 per day per person, and my DD9 was free. It was so worth it, to cut out that extra walking.

And about DL being different from WDW, I had several people warn me ahead of time to "not be too disappointed" at DL, because of the size of the park, the size of the castle, etc. It was good that I knew these things ahead of time, because now I can enjoy DL for what's different about it. I bet that, if we weren't trying to go on Memorial Day weekend, we could really appreciate the intimate size and feeling alot more.

Tonight we are going to California Adverture, to see the Electrical Parade, and then back to DL for more rides. Tomorrow we go back to CA, because my big thing is to ride Soarin'.
