We just got home from a 5 night vacation to Orlando. Me (37) and my husband (36) and our daughter (9). We have been on 2 disney cruises, and one trip to Disneyworld when daughter was 5. Now that she is older, and tall enough to ride big rides, we decieded to try out Universal since they have more roller coasters/thrill rides than Disney, and also since it was ALOT cheaper than Disney.

We flew in from St Louis Airport to Orlando on Sunday. Our plane arrived about 2:30pm and we had arranged for Florida Tours to pick us up in a town car at the airport and take us to a grocery store and the hotel. The price was $109 roundtrip plus driver tip. We got to luggage claim, and there was a guy with a sign with our name on it. He helped us get our luggage to the car. It was a nice Lincoln Towncar. He took us to a Publix grocery store. We grabbed soda, juice boxes, chips, doughnuts and muffins, milk, a styrofoam cooler ($4.99 - nice size) beer, wine, and bloody mary mix and cosmo mix. They only sold beer and wine, no liquor, but someone informed us that a few doors down in the shopping center was a liquor store. My husband ran down there to grab some vodka for bloody marys while I checked out at the store. Then we were off to hotel.

We pulled up at The Beautifull Royal Pacific Resort. A bellman came out and helped us load our luggage and groceries. I went to the check in desk. They noticed I was a Loews first blue member and gave me an upgrade to a park view room, #1452. Our view was of a bit of the water taxi route and of Dr Doom's Fearfall ride. Our rooms was average size and had plenty of room for the 3 of us. The piece of furniture that the flat screen TV was on was very tall, and had 6 large drawers. We used 3 of the drawers for snacks and drink storage, and the other 3 for clothes. There was also a nice size closet where we hung up the rest of our clothes and kept our shoes and suitcases. There was also a safe in the closet which you open with a 4 digit code of your choosing. I was glad the sink/mirror was outsdide of the bathroom, so I could be doing hair/make-up while someone else was in shower. We kept our cooler filled with ice, with the milk and other beverages in the floor in the entry way. There was a full lenghth mirror and a bit of space that we kept cooler on tile floor. The cooler kept everything cold, even the milk and never leaked a drop. The Styrofoam cooler was square and was about 2 inch thick with a handle. We put more ice in once per day, sometimes twice. When we got to the room, we cranked the air down to 65. It cooled down, but when we came back from the pool, it wasn't cold. I called the front desk and they said they are a green hotel, and the air is on a sensor, so when no one is in the room, it goes back to 75. Well, my husband doesn't like to be hot, so he wasn't very happy about that! But, it only took about 10 minutes to cool back down when you came back into the room, so it ended up being ok. We were worried what would happen at night when you were in bed still, but the air stayed at 65 all night, so that wasn't a problem.

After unpacking we went to the pool. The pool area was beautifull! We choose some loungers in the sand. We snuck a couple beers in my tote bag and I made a cosmo in the room and brought it down in one of the insulated coffee cups with lids from the room. No one ever said anything about our drinks, and we saw all kinds of people who brought there own coolers down to the pool all week with no problem. My husband bought a beer at the pool once, and I think it was over $8 becase they add grat. My hubby would make a bloody mary in the morning and put it in the coffee cups and take anywhere, pool, water taxi, theme park etc..

After a couple hours at the pool, we got cleaned up and went to city walk to eat before our Blue Man Group Show at 9pm. We picked the Nascar Cafe, cause it looked close to BMG and we didn't want to be late. It was a neat place, with tv's that you could change the channel at each table. Oh I forgot to mention when we checked in, I asked about the savings guide that I was supposed to get for ordering park tix online, and where I should go to get one, the lady and the check in desk got me one. There was a free coupon for the Nascar Cafe, so we used it. I can't remember if it was a free kids meal, or 10% off, because that is what most of them were. I got a buffalo chicken sand (great), husband got the chicken fried chicken that was supposed to come on top of mashed potatoes with gravy, but he got fries insead, and they forgot his gravy on the chicken so it was kinda dry, but I said they probably thought he didn't want it without the pototoes. Daughter got the kids pizza which was good. It think we had 2 sodas and a beer, and with our coupon the bill was $35.

Next we headed to Blue Man Group. The show was amazing! I had bought our tickets about a month in advance and we were in the 2nd row after the poncho section. The music and lights and visual effects were great!!! We all 3 loved it! The Blue men come out in the lobby 5 minutes after the show. My daughter had bought a program and he signed it with his thumb in blue paint. I didn't bring my camera, so I didn't get a picture of her with them :sad1:

After the show we headed over to citywalk and into Margaritaville, who had live music. It was about 11pm. We asked if we could come in with our daughter, and they said sure! We all ordered a drink and listened to the music for a little while. It was a really good band and we enjoyed it! We headed off to bed around midnight. Up tomorrow, Universal Studios......

Great report so far.:goodvibes BTW: The a/c sensor is in the corner right by the front door in the ceiling. Like they said it senses the door openning and shutting to turn on the air. It cools down real fast though.:thumbsup2

Day 2, Monday Universal Studios

We were hoping to get to the park at opening (9am), but after being out late, we didn't make it until about 10am. We thought the park was beautifull! We did Terminator, twister, saw blues bros, Mummy (wow that ride was awesome!!!! we rode it 3 times in a row), men in Black (also awesome, rode 2 times in a row), simpsons, disaster, Jaws, and saw bettle juice show. We had concidered getting the meal deal, but soon realized that when it was hot, we didn't feel like eating alot, and also didn't want to have to find a specific place to eat, we would rather just eat when and where we wanted. I remembered alot of recomendations for Louis Ital Rest, so we were close around lunch time, we ate there. We got a whole peperoni pizza ($20) and bought a $6.99 souvenir sipper cup which we could use the whole trip for 79 cent refills. The pizza was great and I thought a reasonable meal! My daughter bought one of those fan/water spray bottles. So I had just brought a tiny purse that only held my sunglasses and wallet. I then found myself carrying the sipper cup and spray bottle etc. I found a gift shop that had the prettiest sling bags (mulit-colored with sequins) for $10, so I snapped it up and loaded it with all of our stuff. It was pretty hot (107 with the heat index) so we decided to go back to the hotel and hit the pool at about 3:30pm. On our way back, we discovered that the Lone Palm (Margaritaville's outdoor patio) had happy hour every day from 3-5pm and had half price margaritas. They were good and cost $3.63 with tax, frozen or on the rocks. We had a couple on the way back to the room.

After a few hours at the pool we got cleaned up and went back to Universal at 8pm. The park closed at 9pm, so we only had an hour to hit a few things we missed. We did Jimmy Neutron, Shrek, and my favorite The Mummy!

I can't tell you how great the front of the line access with our room key was. My husband was skeptical, and thought half the people at the park would have them too and we would still have to stand in line a long time. Well, not the case. We litarally walked on most of the rides, maybe a 5-10 minute wait was the longest we had all week, even on rides that had over an hour wait for regular folk. We almost felt guilty walking past all the others in line!

At 9pm, after park closing, we took the water taxi over to Portofino and walked around. It was beautifull, we decided to eat at Mamma Dellas as suggested on this board, and it was fabulous! It was our splurge of the trip We had a coupon for a free appetizer, and got the calamari, it was great! I ordered the Pollo Carbonara, fantastic! My husband and daughter got fettecini. It came with a great assortment of bread and some Itallian singers strolling thru which was magical! We had 3 soda's and 3 glasses of wine, and our bill was $85 My daughter's kids meal came with dessert, so she picked the choc chip cookie and got it to go. We split in when we got back in the room, it was warm and huge! A great end to a perfect day!

We went to bed thinking, why would anyone want to go to Disney after the easy going fun here?

Day 3, Islands of Adventure

We got to the park about 10am, rode the Hulk - wow 3 times in a row, then spider man, Dr Doom, storm force, then we ventured over to Toon Lagoon. We were hot and thought a couple of water rides would be nice - not! We rode Bilge Rat Barges and Ripsaw Falls and got totally drenched on both of them! They were good rides, but I don't care for getting soaked (especially getting my face and hair wet and walking around) By then we were getting hungry, so I said, let's eat at the #1 Theme Park Restaurant in the World - Mythos! It seemed like it took forever to get there thru Jurassic Park into Lost Continent....we found it, no wait, really nice inside! I ordered the Crab Sliders which were just ok (kinda mushy) and it came with a tiny scoop of potato salad and a little cup of some sort of fruit. My husband ordered the cheeseburger, which I thought would be fantastic, but he said was the absolute worst burger he had ever had. He said it had no taste and it didn't even look like real beef.....he gave me a bite, and it was awefull, it looked like a soy burger or some sort of fake meat, I could hardly swallow it. My daughter got chicken strips and they were good. I think our meal was around $40. After this we were still wet and sticky, so we went to the hotel to hit the pool.

Tonight was the Luau at the Royal Pacific. It was really hot out and we were worried it would be uncomfortable eating outside. You could check it at 5:30 and they seat people at 6pm. About 4:30 came a huge thunder and lightning rain storm. We wondered if they would still have it. We went down to check in around 5:30, it was still pouring, but the Luau takes place in a nice pavillion, so we wouldn't get wet, except walking over to it. A miracle happended and it quit raining right at 6pm. Also, it totally cooled down after the rain making it quite comfortable. As soon as you were seated you could start with the food and drinks. The food was fabulous! All sorts of meat, pork, bbq, salmon, chicken stir fry and beef, rice, salads, fruits, deserts...wow The drinks were a different story. All the beer, wine and Mai Tai's. Well, the only beer they had was Heiniken...which my husband said was awefull, the wine I tried was a Chardonay, and awefull, so we stuck with the Mai Tai's ...they were good, and as you drank some, they were right there filling your glass up. My husband didn't think there were any alcohol in them though, cause we never felt it. The show was good! All of the performers were from Hawaii... 4 hula dancers and 2 men who danced and twirlled fire, etc.. and a band. The best part was at the end when they got people from the audience to dance. It would really be funny if someone you knew was up there!

I think they must assign seats when you check in, because I was talking to the family in front of us in line, and they were at our table along with another family that was also in line with us. I wouldn't worry about getting there early. The front tables were closer to the stage, but we were almost in the very back and could see fine, plus we were the closest to the food and the bar.

The Luau lasted about 2 hours, so it was over at 8pm. We went back to the room so we could for once, be at a park when it opened the next day...

Day 3 - Wednesday IOA/US

Today we got up and made it to IOA a little after the 9am opening. We rode Hulk about 3 times and made our way to Jurasic Park and did the rides there the water ride, which if you are in the middle or back don't get very wet thank god, and the flyers which we had to take turns riding with my daughter cause only 2 seats and you had to be with a child 36-54 inches to ride (or something like that) it gave a nice view of the park. Then we went to Posidons Fury - nice show, but long wait. We did Dueling Dragons, fire and ice twice each side, we liked ice better. You can get a nice view of the castle they are building in Harry Potter area. It looks cool. It was time for lunch (around 12:30) and after the Mythos fiasco, my husband didn't want to try eating at the theme park anymore, he said let's go to Hard Rock where we know the food is good. (I'm thinking we can eat at the Hard Rock in St Louis anytime, now were in Florida and we are gonna eat at a Hard Rock? whatever) So we go, it was good, we both had some sort of chicken sand, daughter had kids meal burger and I had a pina colada, and he had a couple of beers with tip it was $50 (I love it when he picks and it is expensive, he doesn't say a word!) So now we have a second wind and head over to US to check out what we have missed, we ride my favorite ride The Mummy and check out the Horror Make up show, it was good and we rode ET and maybe a few more, we went to Margaritaville for happy hour then let our daughter get a hair braid/wrap at a stand in City Walk, then we had a third wind and went back to US to ride duelling dragons and mummy and men in black a few more times. We closed the park down 9pm then headed to hotel to clean up and went to Jakes for appetizers. They were really good, hubby had hot wings and I ordered a app platter with wings, cheesesticks, ribs, and spinich dip that we shared, daughter had kids pizza, we all had sodas and bill was $38. Then off to bed ....going to Sea World on Thursday......we are spoiled by the short lines using our express pass, so not sure we want to go somewhere else where the lines may be longer, but we had done most of US/IOA and wanted to check out something new....the hotel has a free shuttle at 10:15 am to seaworld that returns at 6:30pm. You had to go to ticket desk at hotel after 7am to reserve a spot on the bus the day before. We were going to buy our tix at seaworld since I had a SouthWest Air Rapid Rewards card, I could use it for 20% tickets at the gate.

Day 5 - Thursday - Seaworld

Well we got up and were ready to go by about 9:30, we should have taken a cab to Seaworld, but instead waited on the shuttle bus which was a little late, then stopped and let people off at Wet and Wild then dropped us of in the parking lot of Seaworld and we had to walk quite a ways to the entrance, my husband then says, we are taking a cab back, I'm not sitting on that damn hot bus on the way back and stopping at other places again. Well, I didn't think it was that hot.

So we go to the ticket window. Adult tickets were $75 and kids $65 you could add on a "Quick Que" for $19.99 which was like an express pass. So my SW Rapid Rewards card got us 20% off tickets, but no discount on quick que. They gave us a card and a wrist band. The wrist band got unlimited access to manta, kraken, wild artic, and one more ride which I can't remember. Then the card was a one time use for the paddle boats which were big pink flamingos and the sky tower, which was a round tower you sat in and it took you to the top and turned around so you could see the park, both of these would have cost additional fees without our pass. We were dying to ride Manta, the new coaster, but we heard a guy on his cell phone saying that he got stuck on a ride for 45 minutes and now it was closed down. Well, it was the Manta and it was closed about 4 hours, and reopened in the afternoon, so we shot over there and got in line. The express line wasn't too long but right before it got time for us to load, they had another problem and only one line was loading (on the other side) while all of us on this side stood) they finally got it working. When you sit in the seat and pull down the shoulder harness, then the whole seat lifts up and puts you on your stomach before it heads out on the track, they were having probs with the seats not lifting all the way back, so it wouldn't go out on the track. Anyway, we finally got to ride.....WOW....it was awesome. I think it was the scariest coaster I've ever been on (including the ones at Kings Island) you were on your stomach and sometimes on your back going upside down....wow, we rode again. The Kraken was good, not as good as Hulk though. The animal shows were great. For lunch hubby says look, after this show we will be close to Shark Encounter Grill, lets eat there. I read about it....underwater shark viewing dinning experience...which made me think....it has to be expensive...you don't view anything while you eat for cheap....so I kept my mouth shut and said "sounds good". Well, long story short, it costs us $85 to eat lunch! All they had were dinner type entrees...steak, pasta...so he had a ny strip and I had chicken pasta, and daughter had a hot dog kids meal. It was excellent, but pricey. The sharks were fun to watch and it was a classy place and nice to sit and cool off, just glad I didn't pick it!:rotfl2:
We stayed as long as our feet would allow us. I think we left about 8pm (the park was open until 10pm) and took a cab home. It cost about $20 We then went to the pool for a while (they were open to 11pm every night, which was nice) then came back to room and ordered pizza from one of the many places that slipped menus under the door. It was ok, but it was late and we didn't care.

Next day we didn't have to leave for the airport until 12:30, but were afraid to try and go to any of the parks, so just went to the pool a little and packed etc..

More about the hotel. The pool was huge and beautifull. It had ping pong and pool table outside, and plenty of lounge chairs, volleyball in the water and out in the sand/beach area. They played various games for the kids that they could join every few hours. There was an ice cream stand and a bar and grill. We were in Tower 1, which we loved. When we would come down the elevator to 1st floor, we would just turn right and there was the pool. there was also a laundry room right there too. I brought those Purex 3in1 sheets to use and the washers/dryers only took quarters $2.50 each. It was sometimes hard to get quarters because the change machine was usually broke, but the lobby, or gift shop would give change. It was air conditioned and had a TV, I felt safe in leaving my stuff in the washer/dryer until done and going to pool and coming back. Everyone we encountered there was nice. The workers for so nice and all of the people we met were too. I felt very safe and secure there. The Sea World employees were not quite as nice as the ones we encountered at all of the universal properties.

There was an ice machine on every floor, before we left on Friday, we had a ton of soda, water, and beer left. We couldn't take it on the airplane with us, so we left it in the ice room, with a note telling people to take what they wanted. We also left our styrofoam cooler. It was gone in a few hours. I wanted someone to be able to use it, since I figured if I left it in the room, the maid would have to throw it out. Boy, I hope some teenagers didn't get it - I didn't think of that until after it was gone - oh well, no one would be driving.

We usually don't eat breakfast. We had bought some muffins etc at the store and ate them the first couple of mornings, but a couple days I went down to the Lobby floor that had the continental type stuff you could buy and take to go. I got 2 doughnuts, a homemade hot cinnamin roll, and a bagel with cream cheese, and it was around $10 - not bad.

We took the water taxi when it was there, but if not, we would just walk the path. It didn't take long. The last day, we realized that if we went down the stairs that were right beside our room to the 1st floor, there was a door that leads right out to the path, we could have taken and cut a little time off our walk, oh well. Twice we took the pedicabs (bike/rickshaw) back from IOA. It was nice when your feet are tired. You just have to tip them.

In summary, we loved Universal and staying onsite. We had only been to Disney once before, and I can honestly say, will probably never go back to Disney. I did notice there were very few strollers and small children, they were of course all at Disney. Now, if I had a small child, I would go back to Disney, but since my girl is 9 and in to thrill rides, I can't see us going to disney anymore. I would go back to Universal in a heartbeat. It was relaxing yet full of fun. I will be recommending it to everyone I know! Now, if you have small kids, or kids who are timid or scared easily, they may get the holy crap scared out of them, but we loved it...bring it on!

On a sad note, after returning from Sea World on Thursday, I had a few text messages from friends telling me that Michael Jackson had died. I was shocked. I was a huge MJ fan when I was in 5-6th grade. When we were at the Horror Make Up Show on Wednesday, the lady mentioned someone in the bussiness she would like to work with, Rick Baker, I turned to my husband and said, "he did the make up in Thriller" , and the next day MJ was gone. How ironic I had just thought of him the day before, when I hadn't in years.

Well, hope you enjoyed my report. I thought it may be helpfull hearing my views as someone who was viewing it for the first time. Please ask any questions...

Thank you for writing this trip report. It sounds like you all had a great time. We've never stayed at Universal, we have DVC-but I am considering staying there for a day or two the next time we want to go to Universal. The FOTL access sounds amazing.
:yay:

Thanks for the TR. I'm looking forward to our first Universal trip and your reviews have been very helpful. :thumbsup2

I also forgot to thank everyone one these boards that helped me so much before we went!

Thanks for your trip report. We're thinking of splitting our next vacation between disney and Universal. We are a family of 5- me, DH, DD10, DS7 & DD5 (at the time of travel). We're leaning towards RPR - as I like the theme and we don't want anything fancy due to the 3 kids. Portofino Bay looks more for adults, HRH and RPR seem fine. RPR looks like the furthest from the parks.

In your opinion, which universal resort hotel would you recommend? We love our time by the pool so the pool is a big deal. Thanks for any suggestions.

Joanne

I loved the Royal Pacific. We looked around Portofino, and I have read on here that the rooms are bigger, but we loved the theme of Royal Pacific, especially for kids. The pool was great. I didn't realize they had a boat looking thing in the pool that was a big water sprinkler the kids could run thru. The landscaping at Royal Pacific is fabulous and so was the walkway to the parks. It reminded me of being at The Mirage in Las Vegas, palm trees everywhere. I may be wrong, but I think Royal Pacific is the closest resort to the parks. We had a very short walk to IOA and also a short water taxi ride to City Walk. We took the water taxi from city walk to portofino, and it was quite far, we passed Hard Rock on the way.

HRH is really the closest to city walk and Universal, but RPR is the closest to IOA. We have pool hopped to the other resorts and we always say we are glad we stay only at RPR, its so nice there.:thumbsup2

Great trippie!!!

We are visiting RPR in November and your report is getting us excited!!

How did you like the car service that you used?

And, when you returned to RPR by taxi, did you find it outside the park, or did you have to call one?

Thanks! E

Thanks for your opinion on RPR - we'll probably stay there if we ever get to go. :sad1:

Thanks again.

Ok, let me rephrase my earlier question.... ;) About the taxi, it was the return trip from Seaworld that I was asking about.....

Thanks!! E

Fantastic trip report, I really enjoyed reading it. You sound as if you had a wonderful time :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the description, we think we may want to do the Luau at the RPR and you have convinced us, will stick to the cocktails I think!

And must remember about happy hour at Margaritaville :thumbsup2

We loved the car service. They were waiting for us both at the airport and at the hotel when we checked out with a sign with our name on it. Very nice, clean, well airconditioned Lincoln Towncars (they also have bigger vehicles if there are more in your party). They helped us with our luggage and knew right where they were going.

The only taxi we took was from SeaWorld to our hotel since we stayed longer than the bus pickup time. We just went out the exit from SeaWorld and they were lined up to take people. There was some sort of fight between a couple of drivers and some people were in one cab, and got out and in another one. The cab driver was not nearly as nice as our TownCar service and had to punch the address into his GPS (it was only about 10 minutes apart, I think I could have found it, and I had never been there before) and he didn't talk to us and was a terrible driver (pulled out in front of a huge bus that almost hit us) We are used to rude taxi drivers in Las Vegas where we usually go on vacation though!

Ah - I wansn't sure how close Hard Rock Hotel was, because we never went there, we just passed it on the way to Portofino, which seemed farther away. Our pathway at Royal Pacific came out really close to the entrance to IOA and by Margaritaville in City Walk (our favorite place for happy hour!). I guess the Hard Rock path would come out closer to the Universal Studios entrance, is that correct?

Loved your TR. Just have a few questions.

The luau at RPH: How much was the ticket to attend and was that for bottomless beverages?

On your taxi ride from the airport to RPH the driver waited for you to stop for your "supplies" and it still only cost you $100 round trip. Am I correct? Returning to the airport he just arrived in front of the hotel!? How wonderfully simple.

Just a comment: My DH wished he stumbled across your "offerings" at the ice machine. LOL

Nicole
