We're doing a 5 day trip with a 4 year old in a few months and I'd agree that 2 1/2 days is probably right for MK. We're only doing 4 park days with one 1 being a 1/2 day at EPCOT (solely for the new Frozen Ride and Nemo).
As to the comment made about leaving to take naps/breaks, I think it all depends on where you are staying. We made the decision to say at the Grand Floridian specifically to be on the monorail.
Granted, leaving the park and getting to the hotel is not a 5 minute affair, being able to get back and forth within 30 minutes for us was well worth it.
Ultimately, it also depends on your kid. I know there is no way I can get mine through a full day without some type of rest or change of scenery.
