First timer going from 12/20 to 12/24 - Need advice :)

Hi All,
We are so excited about our first Universal Studios trip from 12/20 to 12/24 , and need some advice from all you nice and knowledgeable people

Our itinerary is as follows:
- arrive at Orlando Int'l at 1 PM,
- rent a car from Hertz to go to Portofino,
- go shopping for the rest of the day and drop the car off at the Hertz counter in the hotel,
- hit the parks from 12/21 to 12/24 (4-day tickets), and
- fly out late evening on 12/24.

1) Should I go shopping on the first day? I figure that we would have lost half a day and it's not worth wasting one day of the tickets.
2) Or, should I defer the shopping to the last day on 12/24? Which would be worse - the shopping crowd or the park crowd on that day?

I would imagine the shopping crowds would be worse on the 24th than the park crowds
