first timer and timid

PLEASE - do NOT use the Scopolamine patch. It is super strong! I was slurring my words, dizzy and could not see up close (at all!) and I never touched the patch, my husband put it on for me. It is now two weeks after our cruise and I am just now starting to feel okay. I have been suffering with extreme fatigue and dizziness. I had been training for a marathon, but I have been unable to run ever since I first used the patch. I have never had any bad reaction to medication. I have two friends that used it as well - one was hospitalized for "rapid" heartbeat and the other was super sick after removing the patch. I know some people have been fine - but I have never been so scared at how I felt when I removed the patch.

Now for the really good news. My 10 year old gets motion sickness very easily (in car, plane, movie theater, etc). She was fine on the ship with just one children's dramamine that she took before we boarded. She never once felt queazy or felt the ship rock. The stabilizers are amazing! I would recommend a room mid-ship with a veranda (for fresh air and to see the horizon). I really think I would have been fine with just a dramamine or two.

Sorry to sound so dramatic, but if I can stop you from making the same mistake I did than it is worth it!

PLEASE - do NOT use the Scopolamine patch. <snip>

Works a treat for my wife. Works better than anything else she has ever used, and that includes elastic bands with marbles in them, ginger ale, green apples, ginger candies and pills, sleepy meds, etc.

Thank you for all this information! When I cruised the first time a few years ago I got nervous about being sea sick and took dramamine and was fine. My friend shared a room and took it as well and had reactions... the first night I woke up to her falling out of bed. The second night I woke up to her having a loud argument in her sleep. I spent years as a flight attendant without motion sickness and somewhere around age 40 it hit me. It mostly happens when my husband is driving because he slams on his breaks a lot. I can read a book in the car but I can't read my iphone. I plan to stock up on dramamine, bonine, ginger candy, ginger ale and anything else I can find before our November cruise.
Omg!! I can read my phone or a book with most people driving but I CANT EVEN LOOK AT THE FLOORBOARD when DH is driving without getting extremely sick because of his braking! I feel you!!

The sickest I've ever been was on the Star Wars simulator ride or whatever it is at Hollywood studios. I tried closing my eyes when I felt like I was going to get sick and it didn't work! I've never been so sick in my life! I can't really ride roller coasters anymore without getting sick. Usually I don't get sick from boats until we are back on land and I'm trying to get my legs back under me.

I'm going to take my phenergan pills and cross my fingers I won't need it. Lol.

How do I even know if I will get sick? Better safe than sorry I guess.... but if you have Bonine or Dramamine or Motioneaze, can you have alcohol?
Also, if I am not even sure if we will get sick I should def wait to have any of these until I get seasick, right?

If you don't know/think you'll get seasick, I don't think you should take anything. You don't want to put things in your system that are unnecessary. They have individual free seasickness pills at guest services and the sick bay, or at least they did last time we cruised. Not sure about having alcohol with the pills..

I am very prone to motion sickness. I often get car-sick and sometimes even feel queasy on a train. However, on our last cruise with really strong winds and a lot of waves which you certainly were able to notice quite a bit, I did not get sea sick at all. I have never had trouble on a ship. My theory is that the kind of motion of the ship is different from what you have in a car and I seem to be able to deal far better with the ship than the car.

Yes, mixing the two might make you sleepy but most don't notice it causing any side effects. We use Bonine and it works great. I take one with dinner and then if the seas are rough I take another 1/2 of a pill at bed time.

We just got off the Dream and one of the people in our group got sea sick because she didnt want to take anything. Took her until the next day to feel better once she started taking the dramamine.
