We will be visiting Disneyland fo the first time in September. We are coming from Australia. I've heard a bit about getting a special badge if it's your first visit. Where do we get these badges from and do they entitle us to something special?

You get them at City Hall where you pick up all the other buttons. As far as I know, it does not entitle you to any special perks (at least my son didn't get any special perks when he wore his button last year). Just lets the CM's know that it is your first time to the park. :)

Thanks. Lol, I forgot American's call badges, buttons. I think it's going to take me awhile to remember all the different lingo.

I must remember that you guys call Jelly - Jello, and that Jam is Jelly.

Peanut Butter & Jelly = Peanut Butter & Jam.

And chips are fries over there!

Are there other buttons/badges you can collect? What ones are they?

Birthday buttons, Happy Anniversary buttons, Happy Birthday buttons, First Visit buttons, Newly Engaged buttons, they are all available at City Hall or guest services. :)

You can get them from town hall. It does not entitle you to anything special other then that in theory its gonna create more magical moments for you. Example a cast member might see it and go out of his way to make your first trip memorable, by doing something or at the very least congratulating you on making it to DLR for the first time, this is not guaranteed though basically its just a free button. Have a great first trip!

How awesome! Not only travelling as far as from Australia, but that this will be your first visit to Disneyland as well. Hence, double awesome!
I hope that you and your family have a wonderfully smooth and fast trip, and a most fantabulous time visiting the United States, California and Disneyland!
Wear your first time buttons/badges proudly. :)
If there is anyone that may be celebrating a birthday, ask for that badge as well. In addition, although you probably may already know this, one will receive complimentary admission to one park for one day. It just must be on the actual day of one's birthday, is all. Or if you have a park hopper, AP, or other multi-day ticket, then you may receive either a complimentary admission ticket for a day of your choice, which that offer will not expire until your next birthday, or when you might use it by before then. This ticket is for one day/one park. Also, one can choose instead, either a fun card, or a special fast pass.
Fast passe's are a very important element when visiting Dl. What is nice about them is that you can use them past the window of time that is stamped on them. And you may collect them throughout the day as well. Some people like to do the former, then leave the park for the afternoon, then use their fast passe's or the rest of them, when they return later that day. The only thing that one cannot do is use them for the next day.
I personally so far anyway, have not felt like leaving for the day. So I use my fast passe's as needed throughout the day. I especially like to collect them for the Indy ride. For the lines for that ride normally grow very quickly. Now if you are going to ride Indy at park opening, I would still go ahead and get a fast pass. But do not use it at that time, unless the line is very long. Ride Indy, then use your pass later on. When you have an opportunity to get another fast pass, do so. That is what I like to do.
It is very important as well to arrive at Disneyland before the park opens, or as close to that time as possible. For one can never be too sure about crowd levels, even in the morning. And it is so nice,to be able to just walk on your favorite ride, or very close to it, when being one of the first guests to arrive before or near opening.
I like to visit The Haunted Mansion and The Pirates Of The Caribbean thee most. Then the rest of my favorite rides are Indy, and Big Thunder Mountain Railway, and the Matterhorn. All of the rides are wonderful of course, it is just that these I personally especially enjoy. I also like the petting zoo, because I love animals.
Do ride, if available at the time, the Draft horse drawn wagon. It is at no cost, and is very nice, especially if you love horses. You may hitch a ride at Main Street for this trip. There are two stops.
I highly recommend The Blue Bayou for lunch or dinner. One will benefit best by making a p.s.(Priority seating) for this table service. This restaurant is located right inside the pirates ride, in New Orleans Square. I recommend a p.s. and to arrive at least 20 minutes early for your p.s. so as to request a waterside table. Of the times that I have done so, I not only was seated promptly, I was able to be seated by the waterside as well.
Any assistance that I may be to you and your family, please do not hesitate to ask.

Random question. Can you get more than one button? Not only is it our first trip to DL, we are also celebrating our 25th anniversary.

Why sure you may! :)

A most happy first visit and anniversary too! How terrific! :)
Hoping that you and your family have a wonderful visit to California and to Disneyland!

I must remember that you guys call Jelly - Jello, and that Jam is Jelly.

Peanut Butter & Jelly = Peanut Butter & Jam.

Well, we have jam and jelly--they're a little different (jelly is more...gelatinous. I think the technical difference is that jelly is made from fruit juice and jam is made from whole fruit). But, at least where I am, it's true that jelly is the more commonly used generic term. But everyone will know what you're talking about if you say jam! :)

Also if you are staying at one of the disney hotels on property call them and tell them it is your first visit ahead of time. I also asked them for signed autographs for my kids of mickey and minnie on the phone through vacation planning. When we got there to check in the CM said she would be right back and brought them their autograph pics, 1st time pins AND a big balloon bouquet for each of them!!! for free!!!

You can get as many buttons as you want! :) Just ask, they will hand them out freely.

Can't wait to get my 'first visit' badge (button)

Does City Hall get very busy? is there a better time to go?

Sarah,

I would go to City Hall, as soon as the park opens. That way, not only will you have a great start to your day, by arriving at or before opening time, but by visiting City Hall at that time, I highly doubt the line will be terrible. Matter of fact, in the past, I had not seen any lines at all, during that time frame.

Have a wonderful flight from London! I wish that I were travelling there soon.
And have a great, fantabulous time in California, and at Disneyland. :)

Go in the morning but if the line is long then go later in the day. You can also get these buttons at Guest Services outside the park and in DCA at Guest Services. When you get into DCA there are restrooms and lockers on the right but to the left is Guest Services.

I actually got my husbands badge from the ticket window when we picked up our tickets. The lady asked what we were celebrating and she gave us the badge and then we got another one for our anniversary from the shop near the jungle cruise when we bought my new jacket and the cashier asked what else we were celebrating
