Please do not "shoot" me for asking the same tired ol' questions. I am very new to DVC stays. I will be renting points from a friend and am trying to decide which resort I want to stay in.

The time of visit will be in December (2011).
The party will be 5 people. MIL, FIL, husband, daughter & me.
We are looking at a 2-bedroom villa

Okay - here are the questions:

  • What are the differences between Jambo house and Kidani Village?
  • For these two sections, is it a guaranteed option (like lockoff or dedicated)
  • Does AKV offer lock-off and dedicated options?
  • Do each of the rooms have a view of the savanna? I saw that the master (1BDR) and living area do, but not sure about the 2nd Bedroom.
  • I am assuming that the couch in the living area is a fold-out queen even though the floor plan does not show that.
  • The 1st bedroom is a king and the 2nd bedroom is 2 queens, correct?

We are trying to decide between Animal Kingdom Villas and Old Key West. If you have stayed at BOTH and have a preference, please tell me which one you choose and why. I know we all have different experiences, but I like to hear what others have to say.

I am a little nervous about the transportation and it being so very remote.

I have stayed at AKL Kidani, but never OKW. My 2BR was a dedicated 2BR and had separate balconies for each room. I did not stay savannah view, but I would expect that there are separate balconies for each room there as well. I really don't know how many villas are dedicated vs. lockoff.

I will tell you this - the 2BR villa is exceptional. It has a beautiful motif with lots of bright colors in the bedding. The second bedroom of the dedicated 2BR villa has 2 queen size beds. The nice thing about Kidani compared to OKW is the addition of the third bathroom. Your inlaws would have one bathroom, you and your DH would have the master bath, and your daughter (who I assume would sleep on the pull-out in the living room) would have her own bathroom.

The villa has all flat screen TV's and iHomes. It is really well appointed. I absolutely loved it. Given a choice, I personally would prefer it over OKW. The resort is marvelous, the pool is lovely, the savaanah is great. It is easy to walk to the main AKL lodge and use all the facilities there. I really don't what the villa situation is there, but I suspect its similar.

You will not go wrong with AK Kidani or the main lodge. Great resort.

Some differences and similarities:

1. Floors: all Jambo DVC are on top 5th fl except for concierge right above the lobby which are on the 6th fl (that is the only area where there is a 6th fl). At Kidani, all rooms are DVC and thus all floors (2 through 5) are available. For savanna view, some like the higher floor, looking down on animals, and some the lower floor, looking directly at them.

2. Room size and contents: All 2BRs have a king in the master and a pull-out queen in the living room. All also have a pull out chair in the living room that sleeps one except for the "value" rooms which are smaller and do not have the chair. Dedicated have two queens in the 2d bedroom, lock-offs have a queen and pull-out double couch. All Jambo 2BRs are lock-off; Kidani has both dedicated and lock-off. Kidani 1BRs and thus 2BRs are about 100 sq ft larger than Jambo's. Also, Jambo has a combined tub shower arrangement in the master bathroom and Kidani has the separate tub and shower. Kidani also has the extra bathroom (giving three for a 2BR). You must choose building when you reserve. Dedicated 2BR is a guaranteed request (at Kidani since there are no dedicated at Jambo) as is lock-off.

3. Pools: Jambo's is larger and has lots of shaded areas due to mature trees and bushes; also has two hot tubs, Kidani has one; both have zero entry area; Kidani has significantly longer pool slide; it also has the elaborate kids water play area close to the pool.

4. Restaurants: Jambo has table service (Jiko), buffet (Boma), and counter service (Mara). Kidani has only table service (Sanaa). Sanaa has nice views of the savanna; none of the Jambo restaurants have views. Jiko, Sanaa and Boma are excellent restaurants; Mara is good counter service.

6. Store: Jambo has the much bigger store.

7 Lobby: both are impressive but Jambo has the much larger lobby.

8. Parking: lot is away from front of building for Jambo; Kidani is ideal with parking on ground floor under the building, and with multiple elevators along wings you can always park near where your room is.

9. Busses: park busses stop at Kidani first, DD at Jambo first; at rush hour in the morning can sometimes hit crowded bus to a park if getting on at Jambo. Otherwise, bus service is generally good.

10. Walk to room: at Jambo you can have quite a long walk from lobby to room if at the end of the wings. However, Kidani puts Jambo to shame in that category and you can have the never ending walk down the endless hallway to nowhere to the end rooms (end rooms on north wing of Kidani are over 1/4 mile from the lobby and I guarantee you have never been to a hotel where the rooms in a single building are further than this from the lobby). Wise to request a room close to lobby there. At both, most things of importance -- restaurants, store, bus stop and pool -- are close to the lobby although the Kidani pool is more a little north of the lobby.

11. Room decor: comparable in both; whole resort has rooms-on-a-savanna feel; rooms are actually not very brightly lighted as internal lights do not go to real bright. In fact, whole resort has dim lighting that gives a sense of close to dusk on a savanna.

12. Savanna View: Jambo has three savannas: Arusha in middle of building, Uzima to east of building and Sunset to the west. Most Kidani savanna rooms look out at Sunset, the largest savanna, but it also has a small one to the north/NW , Pembe. Pembe has no giraffes, others do. living room, master bedroom and 2d bedroom all have porches looking out at savanna.

13. Distance between resorts: you can use amenities, including pool, at either building while staying in one. However, walk from lobby to lobby is about 1/2 mile.

One thing the community hall is in Kidani Village if you have kids the may enjoy this. Pool table and games, my kids loved it.

They are remodeling all the rooms at OKW this year with new paint, flat sreen TV's, new carpet & furniture.
Sounds like they will be great when it is all done.

I stayed at OKW last year in a studio and it was pretty large and very quite. I liked the pool there but it had limited quick service food. Nice location for getting around and very near to DTD.

We are staying in Jambo house in Oct, Savanah view.
Can't compare till after Oct..:)

So what I am reading is, if we want a little bit bigger room and we want (need) that third bathroom, we should request the Kidani Villas? Is that correct?

And the 2nd bedroom has its own little kitchenette in it, correct?

Yes

Only if you request a lock-off 2bdrm. (The dedicated 2bdrm does not)

I second that, this is a great resort. We stayed in a dedicated two bed in Kidani and thought it was fantasmic! Its our DVC home resort and we are very happy we bought there.

I am assuming your friend has points at both OKW and AKV- if they don't then be ready to stay whereever they have points- they will need to book at the 11 month window depending on when you are going in Dec- also if you want to change they can try at 7 months but may not be able to get what you want.

You don't "request" a lock off or dedicated 2 bedroom. You specifically book the catagory. The dedicated will have 2 queen beds in the second bedroom at Kidani. At OKW ALL 2 bedroom units have 2 queen beds in the second bedroom, so it doesn't matter if it's a lock off or not. The big difference there is the size of the units. A 2 bedroom at OKW is significantly larger than at AKV.

For your purposes, I'd book AKV Kidani 2 bedroom dedicated as a first choice and OKW 2 bedroom as a second choice. I would probably not book Jambo, since you need the 2 real beds in the second bedroom.

Yes, she does. ;)

We just stayed at Kadani and had a dedicated two bedroom savanah. The balcony went from one bedroom past the living room and to the second bedroom. You could access it from all three rooms. When you book ask for a dedicated two bedroom and they will tell you if they have it or not. We had four adults and two kids it was great because of the three bathrooms. All had a tub and shower. This speed things up for getting out in the morning. We had a great time and loved it.
