First time for Universal

I have never been to the Universal parks and am trying to figure out a touring plan and which rides to include...I have ruled out the Hulk Coaster and Dueling Dragons as I am a chicken and my children are 5 and 7. Should I buy the express pass? We will be there Sept. 8-15. Do I need to work on touring plans or will it be pretty slow. I have gone to Disney for the past 5 years and am feeling pretty overwhelmed with the change. Is there anything anyone would recommend for my family? Anything we should avoid...Any help would be appreciated..

Since you've eliminated the big coasters, you should be able to do just about everything else w/o an express pass. I don't remember the crowds being too bad during early to mid-September except Labor Day weekend. Your kids should like just about everything else though especially Seuss Landing at IOA and just about everything at the Studios except Revenge of the Mummy and maybe Jaws.
