Hi all! And welcome to my first dining report! :wave2:

The Cast Members:

Me (22) – My favorite park is definitely the Magic Kingdom and my favorite attractions (it’s hard to just pick one!) include Toy Story Midway Mania, Peter Pan’s Flight, and Monster’s Inc Laugh Floor. I would consider myself an aspiring/amateur foodie that loves to cook and bake. I love all types of food, but my favorite foods include sushi, pasta (well most carbs actually lol), and seafood. I don’t like celery, and while I like desserts and sweets, I am definitely a more savory foods fan. I was most looking forward to eating at Via Napoli (new to us) and California Grill (a favorite of mine).

Dad – His favorite park is the Animal Kingdom (he really likes the themeing) and his favorite attractions are Soarin’, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and It’s Tough to be a Bug. He also isn’t very picky when it comes to food, but he really likes seafood, Mexican, and Italian. He doesn’t do bell peppers, onions in excess (especially raw ones), and really spicy food. For this trip he was really excited to be on the ddxdp, and was looking forward to eating at Artist Point (the Wilderness Lodge is his dream resort) and Le Cellier (new to him).

Trip Details:

When: May 18th – 27th
Where: Coronado Springs Resort
Why: This was initially a “just because” trip, but it sort of morphed into an early graduation trip (I start my student teaching :teacher: in the fall and graduate in December).

Background Info:

I have been a long time lurker (and rare poster) here on the boards. I developed a love of the World after my first trip with my family in 2008. In the planning of our trip I found the boards and have been following them ever since. We were on the ddp then and loved it and all the dining options Disney had to offer.

I went back to the World for a week with my sister in 2009. This time we wanted to experience even more that Disney had to offer, so we decided to be on the dxdp! We went with the intention of doing a dining report, but it came time to take pictures we kind of fell through. We would forget to take pictures, and when we did take them we felt a bit self-conscious. While it was a ton of food, I still really enjoyed it.

I’ve been in school for these past 4 years (hook ‘em horns!) and another Disney trip didn’t really seem to be feasible. With school taking up a lot of my time, and most of my money going towards school and related expenses, it looked like I wouldn’t be going back to the World for a while.

But then in April of this year my dad asked me if I would want to go back – heck yes! Over Easter weekend we had casually talked about going back to Disney sometime in the future, but I definitely didn’t think we would be going this soon. This trip would just be my dad and me. My sister was already planning on going in June with her boyfriend and his family, and my mom isn’t really big on Disney (gasp!). When she came on our first family trip she actually spent most of her time with her friend who lived nearby – she is definitely not a theme park (or heat) fan.

We decided we’d rather go sooner rather than later, so we decided to go May 18 – 27. This was the best time that worked for me; it was after finals and the end of my lease. We didn’t really realize at first that our trip ended during Memorial Day weekend, but we were able to get everything we wanted to done and avoid the crowds. We decided to stay at Coronado Springs, using a military room discount, and added the dxdp. Since we were booking only about a month out, I thought a lot of ADRs might be hard to get. But we were able to get almost all of the ADRs online we wanted the first day, and only had to check daily for about a week to get Le Cellier and Chef Mickey’s ADRs.

Sorry if this first post was a bit lengthy! :)

The first Disney restaurant we ate at was:

And the menu:

We started off with some sourdough bread and butter, and split a bottle of Pellegrino to drink:

(sorry we started on the bread…we had to get used to the picture taking :rolleyes1)

After much deliberation, I decided to get the:

Yellowfin Tuna Tartare and Crispy Tempura Tuna-Vegetable Sushi Roll
Hijiki and Wakame Seaweed, Yuzu Tobiko, and Wasabi Foam with a Sweet-and-Spicy Sauce $16.00

This was really good. I love sushi, so this was right up my alley. There was only 3 pieces, which I think was the perfect size for an appetizer portion. Inside the lightly fried roll there were vegetables, including avocado, which I love in my rolls. The tuna tartare on top was really fresh tasting. The wasabi foam tasted like whipped cream infused with wasabi, but not enough for my taste cause it lacked the punch that wasabi can carry. With the roll there were 2 different seaweed salads, the more common wakame salad (on the left), which I enjoyed, as well as a hijiki salad, which I wasn’t a big fan of.

My dad decided to order the:

Our Signature Flying Fish Café “Crispy Maine Coast Jonah Crab Cake”
Savory Vegetable Slaw, Roasted Red Pepper Coulis, and Ancho Chile Rémoulade $16.00

I ordered this when I went to Flying Fish in ’09 and I loved it, so I encouraged my dad to get it this time around. And it was as good as I remembered! The crab cake was nicely fried, and topped with a creamy rémoulade sauce. This was all on top of a lightly dressed (vinegar based?) slaw and didn’t overwhelm the crab, which already had a lot of the rémoulade. The sauces dotted around the plate were unmemorable, but made the plate look prettier.

For my entrée I decided to get the:

Oak-grilled Maine Diver Scallops
Spring Crop English Pea, Pecorino, Basil, and Mascarpone-laced Risotto di Carnarolli, with Serrano Ham Cracklins $34.00

I really like scallops, and these were perfectly sweet and cooked. The risotto was good as well, but nothing particularly special as I have made a pea risotto at home once before. If anything, some of the peas in this dish were a bit undercooked and hard/crunchy.

My dad decided to veer away from seafood this night and got the:

Rainforest Pepperberry-grilled Kurobuta Pork Tenderloin
Leek, Fontina, and Truffle-laced Trofie Macaroni & Cheese, Grilled California Delta Asparagus, with a Mission Fig, Port Wine, Balsamico, Carmelized Onion, Trumpet Mushroom Compote $36.00

Let me say that that mac and cheese was the best. thing. ever. I couldn’t stop digging my fork into the dish and getting bite after bite of it. The truffle flavor was pronounced, but added a wonderful earthiness to the pasta that went well with breadcrumb topping. The pork was cooked medium and my dad was amazed at how moist and tender it was (he’s never got it to come out that way at home). The sauce had a lot of components, but when you got a bit of everything with a piece of pork, it was delicious.

I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to get for my dessert, but ended up getting the:

PB&J Crème Brulee

I didn’t actually order this, but our waiter brought it out to congratulate me on my (early) graduation. I’m pretty sure he didn’t realize we were on the dxdp, so he brought this out as a complimentary dessert (it wasn’t on our printed receipt). And I’m glad that he did – this was delicious. :cloud9: While I am a crème brulee fan, this definitely wouldn’t have been my dessert choice. The crème brulee had a mild peanut butter flavor and wasn’t too sweet, which is something that I appreciate. At the bottom of the dish there was a blueberry confiture that complimented the peanut butter and made it a PB&J. I wasn’t a big fan of the biscotti that was served with the dessert, but I’m not a big fan of biscotti in general, so it probably was good. On the right side of the dish there was a white chocolate dipped gooseberry, which I have never tried before. The gooseberry was very tart, but went well with the sweet white chocolate, and had a lot of what seemed like seeds inside that reminded me of raspberry seeds. Also with the dessert came a plastic pipette that was filled with a dark chocolate sauce, which was perfect drizzled over the entire dish. Overall, this was a wonderful dessert, and I’m glad that I was able to try it.

Once I received my dessert, a menu was brought out for my dad and he decided on the:

Caramelized Banana Napoleon

It was a bit weird that I got a dessert so soon and was almost done with mine by the time my dad’s came out, but he loved his. He likes banana desserts, like banana cream pie and banana pudding, so this was right up his alley. I really liked the custard and creamy layers, but wasn’t the biggest fan of the pastry, it was a bit too flakey for my tastes. I myself could have gone for more of the caramelized banana, but I could probably always go for more caramelized banana.

Overall I would say that this meal was a wonderful welcome to the world of disney dining! We used a total of 4 dining credits (2 each) and the meal would have been $147 (including a $21 tip) if we had paid out of pocket.

I had the sushi and scallops at Flying Fish a few weeks ago and both were wonderful! The risotto I didn't care for much but I've just decided that I don't care for risotto regardless of where I get it!

I was debating between the PB&J creme brulee and the boardwork trio and ended up getting the latter. Glad you enjoyed the creme brulee!

Great start". Flying Fish is a favorite of mine. Those scallops look delicious, and so does your dad's pork dish.

Looking forward to reading more!:hippie:

Thank you for the menu shots! The Signature menus change seasonally and the web sites often do not have the complete or current menus. I am looking hard at a trip next May, so I really want to get a good sense of what each Signature serves at this particular time of year!

Great start! Your whole dining lineup looks amazing! I have never been to Flying Fish, but your review and pictures have me really wanting to try it. Can't wait to read more of your reviews! :thumbsup2

Loving your reviews and awesome photos! I had the scallop and pea risotto dish a few Springs ago and the one thing that stood out then was the peas being undercooked...looks like the same Chef is making the risotto :lmao:

Great reviews! I don't eat seafood, but your scallops pictures have me wishing I did!!
