First the bathroom, now the library

is there no place that people won't use their cell phones?!
I was sitting in the library today studying for my anatomy test and all the sudden I hear vibrating across the table. I glance up and the kid is reaching for his cell phone. I was suprised that he even had it on in the first place and when he grabbed it I was figuring that he was going to silence it. Well I was wrong! He proceeded to talk to the person on the other line for atleast 15 minutes. I couldn't believe it!! You're in the library sitting directly across from someone. Atleast go outside!! Has this happened to anyone before?

I've seen it a few times in there. There's a definite reason for that basement in the library besides being able to talk...cell phones don't work

My library has a no cell phone rule..I know this because one day I forgot to turn it off and it rang, so i reached into my purse, turned it off and a librarian comes up to me and say You can't use your cell phone here.
I said, I'm not, I turned it off.
She says, you can't use your cell phones here, it makes the elevator not work. I said, I heard you, I am not using it, it rang and I turned it off.

First of all, I turned the thing off without even answering it, so no need to chastise me, second, I KNOW it doesn't affect the elevator because I've seen people on their cell phones at the library often(mostly Moms in the childrens' play area which is noisy anyway) and the elevator was working just fine.

You own your mobile phone, your home phone, your pda and your TV. Don't let them own you. Technology is there for your convenience!

At our library we have a fast and courteous rule. If your conversation is going last more than a minute, take it outside. This is in the areas that are not quiet areas. No cell phones are allowed in those areas.

I went into the small bathroom (3 stalls) where I work on Mon, and there was a lady in there talking on her phone. I figured she would take her call outside, but she just stood there by the sink and kept talking.

I REALLY had to go, but I just felt so uncomfortable, like the person on the other end was going to hear me.

Talk about rude all around!

I used to work in a library (I am a children's librarian) and everyone (but me) was always on their cell phone. We get lots of teenagers there, and everyone was always gabbing away. Patrons everywhere were talking on their phones. Even the moms coming through with younger kids were always talking on theirs. Noisest library ever. Even worse, two librarians in my department were gabbing away on theirs!!! One librarian in particular would always be talking on her cell phone while on duty at her desk!!! Good thing I was on duty too, to actually help people!

I work at a much better place now, and there is a no cell phone rule. If your cell phone rings, take it outside!! They been consistant about enforcing it, so it's been no problem!

We have a no cell phone rule where I work (large university library). Big signs at the door with a picture of a cell phone with that "do not" symbol over it (the red circle with the diagonal line). Since it's pretty noisy in the undergraduate library people tend to have short conversations there (long conversations are asked to go outside). It's less tolerated in the graduate library and absolutely forbidden in the reading room (which is a quiet study space). The staff don't need to enforce it...as soon as one goes off in there, everyone studying stares steely daggers at the offender. Same way in the graduate study rooms (which are rooms with about a dozen carrels in them that grad students can sign up for for the term). Since it's a small space and usually two or three people in there at any one time, students learn quickly to turn the ringer off when they walk in.

You should have sat down, let one rip, and follow it up with a loud ahhhhh! You get the good echo out of the toilet you know. I bet she would have left then!

Our library is small (but wonderful) and it's great to see people frequent it so often--but I wish the staff would enforce the "no cell phone in the quiet study area" posting. Not only that--but for some reason people choose to hold discussions in the quiet study area as well, instead of one of the other areas of the library. It can make concentrating a bit tough when your ears tune in on all the conversations instead of the mesmerizing work in front of you

I despise cell phones. I truly believe they are one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

There are so very, very few among us who are SOOOOOOOOOOO vital to the functioning of the world they need to be reachable every second of every day. Turn it off. Enjoy life in the here and now. Silence can be bliss, as can enjoying the company of the people around you.

I love my cell phone, but I also believe it can be a real nusience to others around me. I ALWAYS put mine on vibrate and keep it in my pocket....just in case my DS (who has diabetes) needs me. I get pretty annoyed when I'm in a meeting and cell phone after cell phone goes off. I don't know why everyone can't be more like me!!!!
