First teenage slang to annoy me, I swear

Oh, and I thought of another one that my students say. Ima (I'm going to) As in, Ima get something out of my locker. I ask them, "Who is Ima and why is she in your locker?"

It makes me even crazier to see it spelled "imma" because I mentally pronounce it with a short "i" sound!

Nothing on this thread so far is near ad bad as calling ANYTHING other than a coke, a coke.

My inlaws are from Oklahoma and MIL asked me for a diet pepsi-coke. I just wanted to punch her in the face til my hands broke.

I didn't ... because I dont hit old ladies on a first offence. I did hide her smokes.

A lot of grammer nazis on this thread

I don't really like the use of "nazi' in this context.:scratchin But I don't think that is teen slang, since it dates back at least to the days of Seinfeld on network TV.

My son likes to say "newb" and "face palm" a lot. I actually like when they ask to "see" something because it gives me the chance to go all Vanna White and gesture extravagantly at the item. "Hey, can I see the stapler?" I then lift the item and kind of show it off. It never gets old. :)

"tryna" and "imma" aren't new, they're just new to suburban white teenagers. :lmao:

Can we have a thread next about how bad teenagers' music is?

LOL, you PPs all make it sound like so much fun! I'm prepared now for when DD uses "see" that way.

I'm sure the teens are using this one but I've heard it several times from my 20 something coworker...Clutch! That's so clutch! Oh my gosh this ice cream is clutch. Drives me nuts. I finally had to ask her what it meant. It was what I thought but it's so annoying. What's wrong with saying cool or good. Clutch is what you use to drive a stick!

Another one that drives me crazy is "shut up!". I hear it all the time. I was raised to think that telling someone to shut up is very rude or you were angry with that person so used it in an angry context. My kids know that too. Yet I hear friends telling each other to "shut up!" Grr.

I feel my parents pain having my own teenagers... my parents called me a Hippy dippy.....all that make love not war and slang and stuff, peanut pants and short shorts and skirts not to mention all that long hair that the boys had drove them crazy...

They always said one day when I have kids I would get it...well they were right :lmao:

I majored in English, I'm interested in languages, and yet I'm pretty forgiving with new or trendy jargon (new spellings, not so much). Anyway, my son has adopted a new one that may be the very first to annoy me.

It is the use of "trying to" in place of "want to." For example, he asked his friends "who's trying to go swimming?" This really means "who wants to go swimming?"

I should start to get the hang of it, but it still throws me. The other day he said "mom, you trying to go to McDonalds?" And I responded "no sir, I try NOT to go to McDonalds unless there are no other options."

Is anyone else hearing this also?

Just tell you son:

"No. Try not. DO... or do not. There is no try." :yoda:

YES!!!! Someone not from my part of Texas who knows what peanut pants are! We always called them peanut pants (due to the snaps/buttons with peanuts stamped on them....or maybe it had a little tag with a peanut on it) and thought everyone else did. As I got older, I realized lots of people who wore these never called them peanut pants. Are you talking about the low rise/hip hugger pants? :scratchin

I grew up a Valley Girl and I do still say 'Awesome' and 'Cool' and sometimes 'Rad' or 'Like'. Kids are always going to make their own words so their parents don't understand what they're saying.

My husband works at a college and he is always coming home telling about the dumb things his student workers are saying. I try to throw a 'Cray Cray' or 'Whatevs' into conversation to keep him on his toes. :)

Be careful on Urban Dictionary, there are things on there no one should see.
