The way I was raised was I could get a tattoo if I wanted when I turned 18. All my parents really asked was once I started bringing it up that I pick out something that means a lot and I stick to an area that can be covered for my first. They even offered to help pay for it to ensure we focused on going to a reputable shop. My older brother went out and got one within a week of being 18. I ended up waiting I was maybe 20 when I got my first. Its across my back so I had ZERO issues hiding it when I needed to for jobs and things like that. Over the years around me employers have loosened up and visible tattoos are totally fine. I got my stitch tattoo in my avatar when I turned 28 or so. All of my tattoos I can still easily hide if I need to. My kids will have the same expectations. I want them going to a reputable shop but if they want a tattoo when they turn 18 I am more than happy to be on board with it. My husband is former military and covered in tattoos and had to get a couple cover ups done so there will be plenty of conversation about getting something they won't regret later.
