Upon leaving our room we always call housekeeping and tell them. I turn on the dishwasher and have always thrown away any left over food in the fridge. Isn't that how we are supposed to do it?
Disney needs to go back to the old way. Make all guests check out at the front desk again. That way HK will know the room is empty and then the keys can be changed.
Oh that nice looong line in the morning. I bet some would just head home and let Disney send a bill. Now here's a thought. Kiosks around the property. Upon leaving the keys inserted, a bill is printed, the key is deactivated and if the guest fails to do this gets charged extra. What am I missing? I got to be missing something!!
A simple phone call from the room upon leaving could do this as well .It could be set up to confirm it's from the room (with phone# ) and deactivate the door code for the keys.
If it can track every keystoke (entrance ) then this is very possible

The key system is set up so that the keys remain active until the room is reassigned to someone else, or until midnight, if the room is not reassigned. We stumbled across this information during a visit to BCV. We had to change villas due to a big Disney mix up. Our new villa was available first thing in the am and the new keys were activated and left under our door. We did not have time to pack up and move to the new villa because we had an early character breakfast at MK followed by the Keys to the Kingdom tour. We knew we would never make it back to BCV until the afternoon so we called the front desk for advice. They told us not to worry about it. Since the resort was no where near capacity and they knew the villa was not going to be reassigned--the keys would automatically work until midnight. Being the curious George that I am, I asked if all the resort room keys were this way, or if a special consideration was being done for us since the whole mix up was Disney's fault to begin with. Turns out all the resort room keys are this way. They remain valid until either they are reassigned or until midnight--whichever comes first. We were a little surprised to hear this. Considering how fast WDW resort rooms fill up this is probably not a problem most of the year, but we were still surprised to hear this.
since the introduction of the room ready policy as the maids are knocking on your door from 8:00am even with notices on the door.
I have recently found it necessary to bolt the door and safety lock it to keep them out or maybe it just me
