Why do they always close the best rides in June at DL???? That's a real Monday kick in the pants!!!

Actually, they do not always do that. In fact they rarely do that.

As has been discussed on this board, it appears DLR has been forced into some unusual and unpopular choices on refurb scheduling due to the mnay things they need to do as a result of the OSHA worker safety improvements from 2013 and prep for the 60th anniversary next year.

:wizard:

The last time I visited, POTC was down the whole time I was there. Seems like bad luck on my part. Might be time to reconsider this visit.

What big rides did they take down for Refurb in June the last few years?

I am guessing this is "just found out there are refurbs during my dates" frustration that has happened to a lot of people lately.

Yes it is and the "always" was too much, but coming from the Midwest, this is a hard trip to make. My bad luck again. The last time it was POTC, and a few others. Seems like maybe they are foresaking the guests of 2014 for the more important 2015. If they close one more big attraction before June, I'll just wait another year.

We were there last June, 8-13(?) and I don't remember anything being in refurb...the kids went on everything....I remember that because our Godson had never been on Space and he loved it.

It seems things are still in a state of flux also. Matterhorn appeared on the interactive map for a bit and now it is not there. I found it strange that they would have 2 mountains down at the start of summer(along with a couple other rides). I guess we will find out for sure once June approaches.

Yes and no. Some of the rehabs are in prep for the 60th anniversary in 2015, but some of them are for worker safety in response to issues with OSHA last year (e.g., Space, Alice). The rehabs with regards to OSHA safety need to happen, so sadly some of those must happen during the summer. It's frustrating for guests who don't get to go to DLR regularly, but hopefully you'll still have a good time.

Space Mountain needs to be closed at some point for some apparent safety issues. Hopefully they also use that time to fix the lights in the tunnels.

The Matterhorn on the other hand needs something to be done with the sleds. I dont know why they would close them both for the summer season, but I also dont know what the refurb schedule is looking like for the end of the year and the rest of the long term plans.

We just got through having BTMRR down for over a year, at points thoughout the year we had Space Mt, the Matterhorn, and Splash Mt down in addition to BTMRR. All at the same time, and one particular time around Spring break last year, they were closed unexpectedly . The parks managed to get through the unexpected closures last year and will get through the planned refurbishments this year. If one particular attraction that is a "must do" is not operating, maybe you should look into planning on visiting another time. Personally, one attraction doesnt make or break a visit, there is always plenty of old favorites and new things to do when I visit the parks. In fact, when old favorites are closed, it gives me incentive to try new things or see shows or parades I otherwise wouldnt normally do.

Just to clarify, based on Disneyland.com, Space is going down from 5/12 to 6/26. So in terms of the summer season (assuming it starts on Memorial Day weekend), it'll be down for June. If all goes well, it should be back up by July which leaves July and August of the summer season.

Space Mtn was a disappointment, Alice was a bummer, but Matterhorn is a real trip breaker. Many things that make DL special vs. WDW is going to be closed. Oh and Nemo is another disappointment. So, we may be waiting because DLR.

At least you have the information in front of you so you can make an informed decision about where and how to spend your vacation dollars

I'm sad to see this will be closed too, we're visiting in June from the UK for our 10th wedding anniversary, and there's now quite a few rides that aren't at WDW closed, we'd really wanted to do Grizzly River Run as well as the others mentioned

I agree. I am from North Carolina (which obviously is much closer than the UK!), and have been planning a trip for a few years now. When we made the air reservations, we knew Nemo would be down. Since then, they've added Alice, Space, Grizzly, and now the Matterhorn (at least it was listed on the Disneyland site earlier). It's not the amount of rides down, per se, but it's the ones that are special to Disneyland. It's still the park Walt built; we're still going to have a wonderful time. However if we had known in advance that all of this would be happening at once, we would have waited until 2015.

We're going Easter week which I figured would be close to peak season and there are still a bunch of big attractions closed then:
Small World
Indy
Nemo Subs
Little Mermaid
Grizzly River Run

We went to DL for Presidents Week (very busy) and there were lots of attractions closed then too:
Aladdin
Redwood Creek
Thunder Mtn
Splash Mnt
Nemo Subs
Little Mermaid

It's been a tough year for refurbs.

Matterhorn is down 50% of the time we get in line. :rotfl2: I've been in line for that thing 5 times in the last 6 months and have ridden it only twice. Ridiculous.

I know what you mean. We're coming all the way from New Zealand and I'm disappointed to learn that Nemo and Matterhorn will be out-of-action. When we were there years ago, Splash Mountain was down (although that seemed to be an unscheduled short-term shutdown). There always seems to be something.

But it's not just Disneyland. I remember eons ago being disappointed that the Brandenburg Gate was covered in scaffolding when I was in Berlin. There's never perfect timing for travel but you just have to make the most of the opportunities you do have I guess and try not to let those disappointments overshadow the other amazing things. And I suppose, at the end of the day, the safety audits and refurbishments are ultimately for our benefit. I do agree though, it is disappointing when you have your heart set on doing EVERYTHING.

Matterhorn is no longer showing down per the map. Crossing my fingers it stays off the refurb list.

They are pushing their luck with the number of A-list rides down during the summer time. The use by date on their tickets is their edge otherwise East Coast Universal hello.
