We LOVE LOVE LOVE camping and try to go for at least 1 week every summer. We have a condo tent (that's what someone called it years ago and I loved it - mind you he was drunk but it was funny)

it's one of those 12 sleeper tents - the one with the huge hexagon in the centre and the 3 (double bed size) rooms that shoot off. We've got a portable fridge and all the equipment you could possibly want except for the motor home i'm dying to get but seems that luxury is years away.

Anyways I'm wondering how far you drive to tent camp at FW.

We had a mh when i was a kid and twice camped for 7-10 nights at FW. I remember how much fun it was and would love our dd to experience all the fun.

Problem is we live in Toronto, Canada. We do drive down when we come (coming down next May and staying in resorts but totally taking advantage of dinner at FW to get the feel of the place), but it's a long drive - nearly 24 hours and with a small child we take 2.5 days to do it only driving around 800 miles a day. with breaks for breakfast, lunch, dinner and pee breaks that's about a 12 hour day.

It seems a very long way to go for camping - i know it would be worth it but the thought is very daunting. We wouldn't be able to camp on the way down - not like having an rv where you can just pull up to a site and go to sleep without hooking up. it does take a while to set up.

how far do you guys travel - how big are your tents. how often do you travel that distance for tenting?

and - if we wanted to camp in January how far in advance do we have to book? I know the summers book up almost 2 years in advance what about winter?

Oh and if you do tent in the winter - how cold does it get? I remember coming down in Jan when dh ran the marathons and was surprised how cold it was early in the morning.

We drive 12 hours to The Fort to camp once a year. We usually don't do any parks, this Jan. we did do the P&PP. The weather was chilly for 2 days then it warmed up. We are in a TT not a tent, but a portable heater or electric blanket would be nice on the chilly days. You need to book as far in advance as you can especially for weekend nites. With your monster tent you may like to ask for loop 2000 since these are a little larger sites.

Enjoy the candy..:thumbsup2

Welcome to the camping board! :goodvibes

I know there are several folks on here from Canada...not sure if they are camping in MH or tents though. I think its definitely something you should experience with your family! :thumbsup2 However, I'm sure you'll be "bit by the FW bug" like the rest of it and want to stay there again and again! ;)

The temps in Jan range from very warm to cold. You never know what the next day brings. However, IMHO this is better then the heat in the summer! I'd MUCH rather tent camp in FL in Jan than in August! :scared:

Good luck with your decision! I think you guys would enjoy it! :goodvibes

Welcome to the camping board. I enjoyed your comments on the resorts board.

You will soon know that ailment as the FW bug. It has no cure and the symptoms are basically that you want to go to FW all the time.

Why not rent a camper for your stay? Someone on here rents thiers out. They deliver it to the fort and set it up for you.

oh - really????? - is there a thread about that?

This also what I would recommend since you will have a vehicle for groceries, etc.

There have been several camping board members who have rented from Tina (who is a forum member) http://www.campatthefort.com/
I think you will find that she offers much more than some of the national chains. All of your linens/towels/cookware are included. The 5th wheel is placed on site for you, and the hook ups for your fresh, gray, and black water are made also. You pretty much just have to bring yourselves. The floor plan looks great and will accomodate a good sized family.
We will be traveling from NY, and have wanted to stay in FW but didn't want to tow our travel trailer. I think this is a great solution. Especially considering the price of gas now....it's an even better value.

Ooops...oh..and Welcome to the camping forum..you're gonna like it here!

:welcome:
