first paycheck question

I am starting my new job on Oct. 9. I know paydays are the 15th and the 30th. I have always been paid bi-weekly so this is new. I assume that I will have to wait 3 weeks before getting paid and then my paycheck will reflect a full pay period. Is this right? Or is it possible that I will get a check on the 15th that is pro-rated? Also if the 15th is on a Sunday, do you get paid the Friday or the Monday?

Trying to get my budget together.

Thanks.

You would probably get a pro-rated check. That's how every company I've worked for operates if you come in during the middle of the pay period. My employer now pays us up to the date we work, which works out nicely.

ETA: Although, I see you start the 9th, so it would really depend when their pay period ends. They pay on the 15th, but the period could end the week before.

Are you salaried or hourly?? When does Payroll run the checks? How big of a company will you be working for? All these factor into the answer. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say you should be paid for the week of work between the 9th and 15th, if you are salaried. If you are an hourly, you would not receive a check on the 15th and the check on the 30th would be for the time worked from the 9th to the end of the pay reporting period.

As to when the checks would arrive if the payday is on a weekend, they should be ready on the Friday before. I beleive Federal law says if you have a regularly scheduled, posted day and time, paycheks have to be available by then, so inless the payroll department works weekends, Friday it is.

I am salaried. I don't know anything about payroll yet. It is a large company with many offices in several states. HR is in another location in PA.

I am paid on the 7th and 22nd of the month. Our pay period ends one week before our pay day. I started a couple of days before the pay period ended, so I received a check for those two days on the 22nd. Assuming this is how this company works their pay periods, I would say you will not receive a check until the 30th. Just ask HR on your first day when you will receive your first check.

I have had it work both ways at the same company!! I get paid every two weeks though so that might be different. When I first started I started on Monday and Friday was payday. I recieved a one week paycheck. Then I transferred and took a Leave of Absence. I started back on Monday and Friday was payday. I didn't get a check for three weeks. :confused3

I would venture to guess that by starting on the 9th you will get a 1/2 your regular pay check on that friday. That is just my guess...

Also if payday falls on the weekend or Monday holiday you would paid the Friday before. DH's company's always worked that way. I don't remember when he started vs. when he was paid.

Wow, I wonder how they come up with those paydates?! I do plan to check with HR, just hoping to get an idea beforehand!

Thanks!

If the pay day falls on a Saturday, we pay on Friday. If it falls on a Sunday, we pay on Monday.

At my company you get a prorated check, but it's a pretty big company. At my last company, which was considerably smaller, I had to wait for the next payperiod, and got a bigger than normal paycheck.

My current employer actully double paid me for a week on accident (got a prorated check and then got a 3 week check). Of course once I realized it I went down to payroll and had them fix it (didn't even get a thanks). I still wonder if it was a test that they use on new employees!

For budgeting figure the first check will be on the 30th.

::yes:: I wouldn't count on a check on the 15th.
