First night in Tampa question

We're planning a trip this August, and plan to arrive a day early to attend Tampa Bay Rays game. Does anyone have a suggestion on a nice beach side hotel in Tampa for just one night?

How far do you want to be from the stadium (which is actually in St. Petersburg, I believe)?

We just got back from 5 days in Treasure Island, it was at most 30 minutes from St. Petersburg. We stayed at a good Best Western, directly on the Gulf. There were a few other larger resorts, and some small hotels, also beachside.

You could also look for hotels in St. Pete Beach, or Clearwater, but Clearwater would be a longer drive to the stadium.

I would recommend pricelining a clearwater beach hotel. You may get one for under $100.

Last year we stayed at the Renaissance in Tampa Bay that is next to the mall and it was very nice, but it was a congested drive to get to the beach.
